Quick Look: Rayman Legends

This game exists for two player co-op on the WiiU. You're robbing yourself of the optimal experience otherwise.

I'm always confused how these people who have played videogames their whole lives and play them as a job are so consistently terrible at it, but that said, to (mis)quote TotalBiscuit, "this would be much easier if I weren't talking over it."

I think the Murphy mechanic works fine on the non touch versions, it allows for a very fluid environmental puzzles which ramps up the challenge in a different way as opposed to just throwing a series of standard levels at a slightly higher gradient on the difficulty curve... but considering Brad wasn't running the majority of the time I'm going to pencil this down to inexperience with the game.

Unless you're playing as Barbara the Barbarian, you're doing it wrong.

Also, yeah, the analogies to Sonic (but good) are very apt. The game has a tremendous sense of speed in places and great flow.

I can't watch this anymore. The game sure looks fantastic and I like RUN and jump games that can be a good challenge and some co-op opportunities.

Rayman being controlled by AI in the wiiu/vita versions sounds just as bad as the B button solution

Watching this confirms what I was scared of: the retooled touch controls on a controller look like hot bullshit. I really liked Origins, but I don't know about this. The game looks great other than the touch stuff.

6 minutes in, I really hope he uses the 'run' button soon...

B button fake-touch seems like it works a lot better for the runner-style levels where it's only a matter of moving the next platform or wall into the right position, but they're right that it totally ruins things like that cake level.

I mean, even ignoring the fact that they were doing poorly at it, the mechanic is clearly designed to let you choose your own path with touch, so giving it a fixed path and turning the challenge into timing B button presses creates a difficulty that is just totally artificial (why would he even fly directly under the giant spike weight when there's all that cake to go through everywhere else? I'd never touch that spot in the WiiU version, so why would he "touch" it in this one?). I can totally understand getting frustrated by that, because it's stupid and feels really obviously fake.

Whoa. On PC I've mapped it to Y but LT makes more sense. I'm going to have to give that a try later.

THE RUN BUTTON, GOOD GOD USE THE RUN BUTTON

OH MY SHIT. BRADLEY. The entire game is elevated by it. You have more moveset potential, you can cross certain gaps, and you can truly get in the flow of the game.

Ok, 25 minutes in, and I can't handle it anymore...

Been having a lot of issues with the YouTube player on Giant Bomb recently. It often refuses to load or loads incredibly slowly and the quality settings don't seem to work correctly either.

I do love these guys, but sometimes it drives me into an uncontrollable fury when they play so poorly. They don't have to be masters, but my nine year old brother plays better than them. :/

Never played a Rayman game but this sure does look charming. Music continues to be amazing.

My mother plays Rayman better than Brad, and she didn't grow up playing games. She also has severe MS. My friend's 5 year old daughter also has a better intuitive grasp of platformers than both of these professional videogamesmen. Disappointing.

For all those that left before the football stuff you missed the best part.

I envy a person that can watch such an experienced gamer be so flat out incompetent at anything he gets his hands on - you clearly have the patience of a saint, and I do not. Well done, you.

@carryboy: Thank you, but I kinda don't want to be congratulated for saying such things. I just felt a bit cornered for daring to open my mouth.

That was the very first time in 5 years of being a member that I've made a non-jokey critical judgment against a member of the GB staff - one that I daresay has been a long time coming - and if memory serves, is also the first time I've felt the need to defend myself against another user.

It just makes me sad to see an incredibly well made game put in the hands of someone that should know better. Legends deserves nothing but the best light, and that chance - along with many many other games in the past - is squandered once Brad gets his hands on it and is in front of a camera.

It makes me sadder that I'm attempted to be made to feel bad for just speaking my mind.

Ouch. That was not the best performance I've seen, I'll tell you that much. The game itself looks quite good, though I'd feel the need to play more Origins before moving on to this one.

God dammit the thing that makes these games look and feel so amazing is the fluidity of movement and combat, absolutely none of which was on display here (for as long as I managed to watch). Frustrating.

@kishinfoulux: What? No one is saying that. They're shitting on brad for playing this worse than many 5 year old children. I wasn't kidding about my mother or my friend's daughter picking up this game and playing it at a higher level than these guys. I mean, I'm TERRIBLE at video games, but if I ever saw video of myself playing that badly I'd snap my controllers in half.

This may be the worst run-through I've ever seen of Rayman...

Also the faux-touch stuff looks awful. I can't fathom playing the 360/PS3 versions...

I wish there had been mention of it in the video, but at a during the stream Patrick joined the chat and said he had texted Jeff about the run button, since pretty much everything that went wrong could be solved by just running.

@shaanyboi: I prefer the direct control of the PC version to the AI platforming + touch control of the vita version by a mile, personally. Nothing more frustrating than the AI not doing it's job, getting stuck on stuff, etc. That said, the Murphy levels are easily the weakest part of the game.

Shame they never got to show off a music level in the QL, or any of the invaded levels for that matter.

I think Brad is just a super nice guy and his subconscious conspires against his conscious whiles about winning, making his friends feel better about themselves.

I thought I'd never see the day the Wii U version of a multiplatform game would be the preferable one.

Also, to everyone yelling at Brad, don't ever watch the BR Deadly Premonition Endurance Run. You'll see just how bad Brad is at video games.
