I really like the art style. Anime fits rail shooters.
 
Probably immediately bump it up to hardcore since it was looking pretty tame, but it did get relatively hectic at points. Seriously though, crank this shit up to 11. Rail shooters should always be crazy, in-your-face, full of enemies (though not necessarily crushing on the first level) and whatnot. The one bit that killed me was when the game basically stopped and made you wait for ships to pass by. No, you should go fight those ships and a hundred robo-suits should come out and try to murder you at the same time or something. 
 
Potential. Hopefully later levels add the crazy.

No offense buddy, but making the case and citing Starfox 64 as an example does not help it. Need I remind you the laughable phrases the characters uttered throughout the game (that are still being quoted as of today because of their double entendre nature)?
 
As of the game, I'll go out of my way to defy the haters and say that I'll reserve my judgment until the game is finished developing and is released. Hell, who knows- the game might be completely different by the time it's finished!

I think Atari going marketplace is a good move, can't wait to see if they bring back Berserk! My childhood favourite. Well only cause it was either that or Pac Man.

Hmmm, doesn't really look like it has the oomph that other rail shooters like Sin and Punishment have.  I don't know about this one.

I don't hate this game. I also don't know if "rail shooter" is the best description of games like this. Maybe "dual free-floating rail" DuFFeR. I like that.

Don't see your sense in that. Seeing as how we have vertical-scrolling shoot'em ups and horizontal-scrolling shoot'em ups, I think 3D-scrolling shoot'em up would fit perfectly. Sin & Punishment, Star Fox, and Panzer Dragoon all have the level scrolling at you, behind you, and from side to side. 
 
This Yars' Revenge seems to be dangerously sedate for a shmup, but I am interested in seeing more of it. If there is mouse aiming in the PC version and if it is at the right price then I will probably buy it. Well, after I finish a few runs of Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.

touched up.  Revamp the whole fucking mess from head to toe.  I think the

@Hailinel: Perhaps a little clarification. It's not especially distinctive, and probably cribs from some steampunkish animes that I can't name off the top of my head because I don't watch anime. Ghost in the Shell? That's one of those, right?

@ArbitraryWater:  I can see the Ghost in the Shell comparison in the character designs, though Ghost in the Shell is cyberpunk, not steampunk.  That being said, this game is definitely not trying to be Ghost in the Shell in terms of its design.

Looks okay.
 
The real problem is that the background moves too slowly.
 
Even if it's empty space like the boss battle, the clouds in the background should be flying by faster.  
  

It would also be nice if the boss hid in the clouds and shot missiles and then reappear. 
 
 
They need to play more Japanese Shumps to spruce up the presentation. Especially the already mentioned Sin and Punishment.

This is very disappointing. Even to this day the original Yars' Revenge is unique and timeless. To see what Atari have done here - make an anime on rails shooter where, seemingly, not much happens at all - it's just very sad. An iconic game that was a system best seller deserves so much more than this.
 
A legend of video game history is being brutalized here folks, all for the sake of a few bucks.

As someone who played the hell out of Yars' Revenge for 2600 as a kid, my reaction was this.  YARS' REVENGE!!!!  YEAH!!!  Anime style....errr....rail shooter.....ewwwwww.  I was truly excited for a minute there.  I hate rail shooters and anime, so I guess I'm not the audience for this game.  Which is odd, because I am the audience for Yars' Revenge.  I went through and played a few hours of Yars' Revenge a year ago on my PSP, and I still had fun with it.  That was one of the best 2600 games.

When I heard that they were going to remake Yars' Revenge I was stoked... Then I saw that it was going to be an on rails shooter and my dreams were all but crushed.... I guess there is always gameroom...

@Branthog:  I dont know that using Yars as a IP is any less risky then developing a new IP.  WhoTF remembers Yars revenge.  i played it/may have owned it, and had to google pics to remember what it was or looked like.  I think using old IPs like that is more plain lazy, and prob saves some money in trademarking a new IP then anything else.

Anyone else get the feeling that the Yars' connection was shoehorned in at some point mid-development?  
 
All that talk about 'putting in references where they make sense' sounds like them trying to slot a triangle shaped block into a square hole. Not at all like something designed from the ground up as a re-imaginig of the series.

doesn't look too bad. The art style kinda reminds me of ikaruga(I'm a big fan in case you didn't see my name). The game moves too slow though, hopefully the higher difficulty will be a lot more chaotic

looks a bit slow for a game of this type, even on the hard difficulty.. although i'm sure that was an early level. overall it seemed like kind of an awkward quick look, because really, what is there to ask about a rail shooter?

Wow, it's like Panzer's Dragoon but not.  And it's a downloadable. Nice. Just as long as they don't try and come out with this at $15.00.  But $5-$10 I'd probably be in.  Definitely at $5.

Is it me, or does this game seem too quiet? I mean, I know the sound is down so we can hear them talk, but I'm barely hearing anything. The gun doesn't make much noise, there's no background beat. The only time you hear anything is when an enemy explodes, and even that seems muted.
