I like how Jeff instantly denies Brad the controls.

"No.  Let's just get through this."

On another note, the soundtrack for this game reminds me a lot of of an 8-bit band called The Depreciation Guild and some of the songs off one of their albums, In Her Gentle Jaws.

I really wish this game had online co-op. I enjoyed castle crashers a lot and it was a blast when playing with friends but sticking to only local multiplayer really l imits that so i'm torn. Regardless looks like a cool game and a nice throwback.

" I was thoroughly unimpressed with the gameplay. Felt a bit too clunky and was just dull. Played through the demo with my wife and wished it could have been more fun.  Loved the music, sprites and the overall presentation (the 2D 8-bit style map of Toronto made me laugh, especially Casa Loma), but I just am not interested in a barely updated River City Ransom.  Movie should be good though. "
I pretty much completely agree with this, except for "Movie should be good though". It seems like so many people have been excited for this game, and I don't really understand why. It almost feels like last summer, when Turtles in Time or whatever was remade on the 360. It feels like people think they really want to play an old-school brawler, and then after they play it for a hour or so, they "get" it, and are done with it. Personally, I really don't understand the appeal to the Scott Pilgrim stuff, but at least the art style in this game was neat.

I completely agree with you. I love video games to death and get all the 8-bit references they showed in the QL, but all the trailers and all the hype push me father and father away from the movie. Even though I grew up in the 8-bit generation the movie looks like it wasn't made for mine.

Never played River City Ransom, never even seen it. Now this looks cool and all but I agree that just punching things could get dull after a while, I think the best way to play through it and not get bored is probably with a friend so that's what I'm gonna do.

@Winsord:  I just think the movie will be good because I have faith in Edgar Wright. I absolutely unabashedly loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (and Spaced is quite awesome too). Maybe it'll turn out shit, I don't know. But I have faith in Wright to produce a good movie.

It's got couch co-op, so if I had any friends, they could play that way... but I'd rather play with my digital friends because they usually don't judge, UNLIKE YOURSELF. QQ.

this is where the movie tie in gets a bit weird. People who don't know videogames but think the movie is awesome is going to see the game tie in and think "this isn't the movie...". People who do play videogames will likely enjoy the game but for the lulz at the amount of nostalgic throw back.
Oh well.

You'll need to take some of his (and sometimes the other giant bomb crew) criticism with a grain of salt sometimes when it comes to some odd games like this.

Oh look. A beat'em up game with few enemies on screen that block a lot and spend a lot of the time laying down making it harder to hit them good, encouraging you to juggle them at the border of the screen only for them to take forever to blink out of existence and so make you wait for the stupid fucking coins you are trying to pick.

It also tries too hard referencing videogames, adds stupid button mashing minigames for no reason and is plagued with overly complex button combinations to pull out inane shit?

Fantastic.

You must hate the shit out of fighting games. I don't think they should have forsake the source material and omitted video game references in order to then appear as if they weren't there to begin with. A video game tie in based on material involving video game references including video game references. Clearly pretentious.

Are they seriously whining about the video game references?  About how they are trying to hard?  Jeff sounds like a hipster complaining about how Arcade Fire are such sellouts.

Jeff is probably more put off by the fact that it's Scott Pilgrim more than the fact it's river city ransom. Take away the hipsterness and I have a feeling he'd at least be a little warmer to it. They both admit that they kinda like the idea, just that they don't dig the brawler genre. At no point to they straight up say it's bad.

As for me, I dunno, I only have a PC. I know the graphic artists work, however, which is awesome, at least to me. Here, check it out:

Sure, it may just be a River City Ransom re-skin at heart. But I'll be damned if it ain't the most fun I've had with a XBLA/PSN game since Castle Crashers.

Why is the NES STILL so popular? Will it never be a cult reference in America? To have owned an NES back in the day would make you over 25 at least but is the character that old never mind the readers and players of this game?!

@MagikGimp:  I wasn't born before the 20's, but I like jazz from that era. Hell, the folks that are tool young to remember are a bigger market than those with nostalgia. Reason: Games are still very relevant (more now than ever, really) and have an easily accessible history.  Simple 'nuff.

Man, the amount of negativity in this is ridiculous. Lately it just seems like Jeff hates every game that isn't a fighting game, an FPS, or housed in an old arcade cabinet. Maybe he needs another vacation.

IMO: This is only a $10 game. It is a throw back, not a modern style of game at all. This is meant to be fan service. The game is well made and fun if you are an old NES-area and/or River City Ransom fan. It also wouldn't hurt to be a Scott Pilgrim fan.

Also, the movie is pretty good, the books are better. The game is a good tribute to the source material.

While the main guy in the movie makes me want to invent a time machine (to go back in time to get him out of the movie/tv industry), the game itself isn't too bad looking. Yes trying too hard vibe is going on but I'd sure as hell rather play this multiple times through than see 1 minute of the movie.

@Wes899: That isn't why it exists. Like I said; it is fan service to a series of books about a guy that plays and thus relates to a lot of old school games. It only makes sense that the game make the same references that the books do.

@Jeffk38uk: It's this weird phenomenon that if you liked the game, it's ok that it took from other games, then it's a  'homage'. When you don't like it, it's 'ripping off'. It's a pretty dumb phenomenon.

idk. i think this looks way cool. they added a lot of the graphical nuances that happened when your NES got older. I like the combos. Homeboy is in a band called, "Sex Bob-Omb". That isn't trying to be cool, it is cool. If you are trying to be cool you reference Mario or Link or Samus not Bob-Omb. This just reminds me of being 10-13 years old again and I don't see anything wrong with showing the kids of today what we were all about.

I think it's just that Jeff really doesn't like the Scott Pilgrim stuff in the same way that I, also, dislike what it seems to be about. Based on what little I do know, though, this seems to be a game exactly in tune with what the property's humour.

Tbh, I kinda admire the way Ubisoft have shown they have the guts to do something very different with a movie tie-in game, as opposed to doing some shitty God of War clone.

Ok. Maybe he hates things that exist on "Remember this thing?"

Yes it does make sense that it is faithful to the original stuff (at least in terms of references), but that doesn't make it ok. Yes the books have that "Oh sweet, videogame stuff" thing going on, but it wears out so quick. Aside from all the game refs, I don't see why people like this series. It just isn't good.

The irony is that by being so predisposed about this game, thinking it's trying too hard and is hipster trash, you're totally being a hipster that is trying too hard.
