I'd say it's more like Bad Company 2 in the way that Bad Company 2 is Bad Company 2 and not in the way that Medal of Honor is Bad Company 2.

So what we've learned is:

Making fun of bad games in QLs: Fine

Making fun of bad games based on bad properties with videogame references: Waaaaaaah you guys are too cynical and mean. QQ

But this is a good game.

Calling it "trying too hard" is kinda ironic, since it really feels like they asked Paul Robertson (the artist) and
Anamanaguchi (the musician) and told them to make the stuff they already make in their spare time (aka video game inspired art), just for an actual video game.

Hello Jeff G,

Cool Quick Look, but a little on the negative side. I think Vinny would have been a better wingman for this, to even things out. A 2 or 4 man coop would have been nice too.

This seems like it would have been good about 5 years ago. The more I see Scott Pilgrim related stuff, the more i'm put off the movie.

Who you calling a Kunio Kun?

Brad's like "this looks fun and I have never played River City Ransom. May I play too?"

and Jeff is like "Fuck you! I don't enjoy this game so you're certainly not going to get a chance to make it any more fun than I had prescribed."

Scott Pilgrim's power is to punch a dude 65x in the balls.  And glow while he does it.

IMO: This is only a $10 game. It is a throw back, not a modern style of game at all. This is meant to be fan service. The game is well made and fun if you are an old NES-area and/or River City Ransom fan. It also wouldn't hurt to be a Scott Pilgrim fan.  Also, the movie is pretty good, the books are better. The game is a good tribute to the source material. "
Maybe he just hates games that exist on "REMEMBER THIS THING?!". "
And for something that has an insane amount of references, the game also happens to not be that fun.

Actually, people are just disagreeing with him, not being personally offended or asking him to change.

Seems you're quite offended, though.

The games that this game is apparently spoofing were before my time, but this still looks pretty cool as a new game to me. I especially like the music.

people don't realize that hating something just because of the people that like it, makes you a hipster.

i find the movie trying to hard with the videogame references and special effects, to cover a shitty plot/idea, but i don't have anything against a game like this, it's been ages since i last played a 2D brawler

ps. don't worry guys halo and cod game are about to come out, i bet jeff lose that "i hate everything" attitude and recovers the  happiness with those shooters

I wonder why co-op is being disallowed in Quick Looks. Since the game is just River City Ransom, we all know how it plays and progresses. Co-op is about the only thing I can think of that would have made it interesting to watch.

edit: I'm talking about the video. The game itself looked fine, but it doesn't lend itself well to one of these, especially with a negative driver.

Maybe should have got  one of the Anime Vice people in here to talk about the book series, which I love, and what the series is about. The series is really about real characters and people in surreal situations that only manga and videogames produce. I'd say the characters are the main draw of the series.

It's a ten dollar update to River City Ransom with amazing graphics and a great soundtrack. If you only like to play shooters and fighting games, this isn't for you. This is for twenty something nerds like me who grew up playing these games but didn't get cynical and decide they were all shit years later.

@VilgeDuin: For me, it's just the plot of the story that ruins it. The kind of thing I love in movies are dark, subtle humour, and a good story. This movie bodes neither of those things, thus allowing me to presume I won't like it.

I can't believe he didn't even let Brad get a controller. Would've loved to see some co-op action.

@Chadster:  I didn't say it was manga, I said it puts its characters in situations that only videogames and manga create, thus giving at familiar ground for its audience to relate to. The point of the books are the crazy contrasting elements of the surreal 'gamey' or 'mangaish' moments with the real nature of the characters. Anyways, it's pretty close to manga, if you don't want to define it as such then i suppose graphic novel is more to your taste?

I really like this game, but a big part of that is a very dumb reason to like it... that being the fact that it takes place in Toronto and you collect Canadian currency. That is somehow amazing to me. The game itself is fun too, tough though.

Good gravy, they've just invented nerd hipsterism.  "Oh, man, they're just ripping off river city ransom and mario and megaman.  They should really be digitizing the actors which would, then, be a reference to the classic arcade classic Street Fighter: The movie: the game, which would then be sufficiently indie and obscure enough for my tastes.  Mario is far to mainstream and therefore not cool anymore."  Just because our obscure childhood nerd stuff is now mainstream doesn't mean we have to stop liking it because it's all popular now.  It's a referential little game, try and relax.

Totally in agreement with the brawler fatigue, though.  That's a genre that hasn't really aged well.  And in case anyone didn't know.  Art by Paul Robertson.  He's done a brazillion other amazing things, if you're interested.
