Sonic in its prime was never better than OK.

There, I said it.

I kinda agree, I got my Mega Drive for Ecco the Dolphin, not Sonic, and that's always been the Sega character I've been more interested in.

Looks as good as Brad's reaction time.

By that I mean it looks bad.

I feel like I would have been able to take away a lot more from this video is Jeff was playing. The controls and feel are a big deal in a platformer, but I can't figure out to what degree they're actually bad, and to what degree Brad just isn't good at the game and/or isn't putting much effort into learning how it works. Those 3D segments in particular (see the 1-5 circles he needed speed to reach) seem like they're supposed to be played way faster and looser.

I'm not saying this is an amazing game they just don't understand man, but it might not be bad in the way it looked in the QL.

My favourite thing about this quick look is the part where Brad says that the racey-fast gameplay is not fun and then goes on to say the honeycomb level is more like he was expecting... so, yknow like the 3D sections in Generations and Colours.

They'll never make a sonic game right. Even when they're not bad they're still not good.

Sonic should never be stopping, he should always be moving at top speed, an entire game of nothing but moving at higher and higher velocities would be amazing. Apparently sega isn't aware of this and so a good sonic game will never exist and never has.

Good to see that even when they stumbled onto the perfect formula for a modern Sonic game with Generations, they decide to never make that again and instead just create more mediocre garbage. JUST MAKE MORE GENERATIONS. Even if you have to make more of the 3D levels, I never played them anyway.

I was about to make a remark about the Sonic game cycle continuing another iteration, but this game looks functionally competent. This has got me thinking that this game is good, but isn't for me.

I haven't played a Sonic game since the first one on the DreamCast, but I have to admit, if this game was on PC, I probably would have bought it. It looks like a fun ass game to try and speed run.

Got to admit, the music is pretty great.

Agreed.

Nothing will ever beat Spring Yard though.

Brad is terrible at this game ha, though annoyingly generally dismisive, and seemingly not caring at all about this quicklook. Should have got someone else to do it, he seems annoyed that he even has to do this.

@brad, you need (well, should when you have some free time) to watch Pokecapn's LP of Sonic 2006. Let others suffer. Since you probably don't though, just watch video... 34 or really any one at random. The game is bad in every possible sense. It's kind of remarkable.

Every couple years or so I am reminded that there still exist loyal fans to the Sonic franchise.

The ones I've met in person have been really sincere and passionate to the extreme. Like, even the notorious low points in the series have indignant and vocal supporters. The mere fact that there is a conspicuous minority who defend Sonic 06 is probably the prime example, but I remember a guy who was super into all the werehog shit as well, and was comparing the combat to Devil May Cry among other technical character action games. I mean, everyone has opinions, but that sort of thing teeters on the edge of delusion. It's not even rabid fanboyism as I'm familiar with it, it's like this undying devoted FAITH in a character. Talking to that dude, I realized he experienced an intimate, almost ecstatic connection with the universe or something. that I did not share, down to feelings of personal connection to newly announced characters. To them, Sonic today is a cooler character than he ever was to me in, say, Sonic 2.

Cool to see gameplay elements like wall-jumps and ledge-grabs in there to attempt to make the platforming sequences more fluid, I've been an advocate of implementing those features for years. Although this might not be first Sonic game to have that, I don't really know.

I used to really like playing Sonic games in the past, from the original up to SA2 (though I remember being really frustrated with the camera issues in the Adventure games). Today I mostly just enjoy watching speenruns. Not saying the new games are terrible by any mans, they just don't appeal to me. And I don't even know what I would want to see from a new Sonic game to get me excited about playing one again. I do think a drastically different art-style than what we're used to could be interesting.

Brad is more annoying than usual in this video.

"This controls like shit. Maybe I shouldn't run the whole time? Oh, fuck it, I'm gonna run the whole time anyway!"

It's totally possible the game is garbage and controls poorly, but Brad certainly doesn't know because he's not even trying.

You should. Most people (even classic fans like myself) agree that the 3D stages are the highlight of that game. It perhaps sounds crazy to the more dismissive out there, but they finally got 3D Sonic right. Colors and Generations were, without caveats, really good games. It would be a shame to see that Sega messed it up again.

I haven't played a lot of Sonic games and call me crazy if you want to, but this one looks alright. It's too bad the Wii U actually has quite a selection when it comes to good platformers. Rayman Legends, NSMBU, some indie games like Cloud Berry Kingdom or Mutant Mudds and the upcoming Mario 3D World or DKC Tropical Freeze. I'll probably get it once it's cheap, though.

With more Breaking Brads, Vinsouls, etc coming around, I think I'm getting to the point where I'm no longer starved enough for content to have any desire to watch Quick Looks for games the guys don't give a shit about - it just makes me sad, regardless of the game's quality.

Brad, you are playing so poorly that it's almost too frustrating to watch. If you tell me it's because of lag then I will believe you. Input lag makes me go on "mild tilt" as well and often leads to me playing more poorly than I should do with said amount of lag.

Also people want Wii U to be able to compete with XB1/PS4 because then those who prefer Nintendo's first party games only have to get a Wii U to be able to play the third party games that they like. For instance, as PC is my primary platform I see little incentive for me to get a XB1/PS4 this generation. If Wii U had the same level of third party support then I would get a Wii U without hesitation.

oh man, i LOVE games with food levels, especially if it's dessert...idk it just brings out the inner child in me for some reason (i remember really liking the Pink Panther game for the SNES because it had a food level...also in Baten Kaitos there is a world that looks like it's made out of dessert I believe)

as for the rest of the game it looks good enough....still really dislike the behind the back stuff though

might pick this up once it goes down in price...still need to finish Generations

no, there was a timer in the single player. Its part of the interface that disappears all the time. You can see it around 3:00, top left corner. It goes timer, rings, lives (which, again, Mario and Sonic keeping alive for really no reason). Its just in the 600s which is more than enough time to finish a level, which just adds to the pointlessness of it.

I was more irritated by the constant proclamations of "I don't care" in the beginning. Why are you running the quick look if you don't give a shit. It's different when it's a game they come in to intending to make fun of (see: Hatsu Mike), but when it's something like this, where they're going to treat it like a chore, what's the point?

A Sonic game exclusive to the a Nintendo console. Only those whom were around during the 16-bit console wars understand the irony of it all.

Sega's mistake was making this game a Wii U exclusive. Not because of the Nintendo brand, but because the Wii U is currently on life support and a new Sonic games isn't going to heal the dying console.

From what I've seen the game is getting mixed reviews from decent to bad.
