@tariqari: Yeah, obviously it's a comparison of the two versions of the game, but what I'm saying is it's not a competition between Wii U and 3DS for "best console" etc., it's literally that the 3DS version (of this game) doesn't have the features that made the Wii U version legitimately "great".

IMO, if the 3DS version had the basic upload and search features of the Wii U version, it could have easily been the version of record. If you think that the missing features don't matter, then that's your personal opinion, but apparently to the majority of people here, they do matter.

I don't know why you're getting so defensive about this? This is not part of some cynical conspiracy to hate everything. The 3DS version is *objectively* worse, and there's no real justification for it. Just because you didn't think it was going to happen, it doesn't make it automatically good. You want a new good THPS, but all you got was THPS5 right? Just because it was all you got, it didn't make it good.

You're making weird justifications for why people should be happy for what they get? This isn't a case of love and family, shelter and food or anything. This is a consumer product that people pay a significant amount of money for. We don't live in a reality were videogames can only be garbage and not only can videogames be great, our reality even already includes a brilliant version of SMM and a version of SMM on 3DS with online level play. There is no good justification for the missing features other than Nintendo just decided they didn't care. All of the design work was already done, and the online API and streetpass sharing system already exists.

@mvhvtmv: I don't know why you think the relevancy of console is irrelevant when it's literally the matter. Have a Wii U? Buy Mario Maker for the Wii U. Only have a 3DS? Buy that version. Preferring someone who's never play the game to simply miss out because "we need to send a message! fight with our money!" is as ridiculuous as developers saying they've chosen to make a game unmoddable because of "techncal limitations and the player wouldn't be capable of understanding them." Both arguements are made from the position of "I have what I want and you shouldn't have what you want."

I agree with you that if the game had the missing features, it would be objectively better but the arguement being made and has long been made by Giant Bomb and "the majority," as you've poited out is that if it isn't the exact game I hoped for with all of the features I've envisioned, then it should'nt exist. It's a really narrow visioned arguement that doesn't consider the developer point of view nor the market yhat would buy such a product. This game specifically targets 3DS only owners who would otherwise never be able to experience what Mario Maker is.

Giant Bomb routinely picks favorites and lambasts anything that doesn't fit their cone of visoon. They did the same thing with Fallout 4 last year which is interesting given how similar Skyrim was in terms of issues yet that was met with great reception. The staff chooses to shape opinions that are immediately reinforced by users here giving the perception of "majority" as you references earlier. The truth is there is never a way to know on this site and the mass media at large to know what the majority thinks, a term I find foolish given how easy it is to shape public opinon. Jeff, Brad, and Alex were all once opinion givers and storytellers. Opinion wasn't shaped, it was clarified. At some point between then and now they decided to sit back and take the easy road of judging everything without exploring wether what they were saying is true, because they know the masses will eat everything they say right up, generally speaking.

The only justfication I can think as to why those features are not included is because this was pushed out to make it a reality and that all development is honed on the Switch.

Glad Jeff called Dan out on his world blinders. Dan thinks his world is everyone's world and can't understand anything outside of it (game privilege?) I'd love it if any time I wanted I could use twitter to create online game experiences, or to get companies to notice and give me special privileges, it would enhance my gaming world for sure.

Got 2 copies for my kids so they can create levels and share them with each other. I know some features are missing, but they don't seem to be deal breakers.

@tariqari: If you have the 3DS version and you like it, that's fine.

It just sounds like you're saying 3DS owners should just blindly accept anything that's in front of them without being critical.
The staff being critical is good, especially coming from Dan and Jeff who are huge fans of Mario and Mario Maker.

@tariqari: I'm saying this isn't just a fanboy console war here, you're the one that's conflating the issue. There are very real and not-inconsequential differences between versions. If you like the 3DS version, that's your own opinion dude, you're allowed to purchase and enjoy whatever you want, but you're the one that seems to be saying that people shouldn't be able to complain when provided with a substandard product?

Also, idk you seem to be ascribing some greater meaning to the GB community not liking the things you don't like. Every community is going to be biased some way, but when it comes to things like this it's rarely a cult of personality. I like GB because historically they mirror my opinions on a lot of videogames, and I don't trust Dan's opinions, because they usually don't match my own.

Yes to some extent GB shapes opinions, but you'll probably find that GB's community shares opinions because that's what brought them together in the first place. I don't come here to get a majority opinion on something, I come here to get a Giant Bomb opinion. If you don't trust the opinions of the editors, then why are you even here? There are hundreds of youtubers out there who will gladly provide you an uncritical effusive overview.

FO4 is a bad example, I enjoyed it quite a bit for all it's flaws, but it deserved nearly every bit of criticism it got on this site. Yes GB gave Skyrim praise in the past, but that game is 5 years old, and videogames have evolved drastically in that time. It's not just the result of some arbitrary decision to idolise or demonise each game, it's just honest criticism.

I'm not sure what you even want. Do you want GB to ignore issues they think matter and just focus on the parts they like the most?

EDIT: I should point out, that if you went back and honestly listened to GB's coverage of FO4, you'd realise that they actually praised it quite a bit, and that they considered the flaws disappointing because the game had so much promise.

Alas, I live in this reality and I'm very thankful and grateful for everything I have.

Being grateful to companies that see you as a money sack is a little bit weird. You're buying products. It's an economic transaction. It's cool that you're happy with yours, but it's kind of weird to get all up ons when somebody else isn't happy with theirs.

Everything else seems like a bummer but I'm glad that the blocks don't place to the tune anymore. It sounded like garbage on the console version.

Please review this version of the game. Give it a score that reflects deleting Mario Maker from Mario Maker.

No doubt this is a weird crippled version. But it's not totally useless, and could in theory replace my SMM gaming on the Wii U since I only do some "100 Mario" every know and then.

I don't own a 3DS nor do I commute, but if I did this would probably be worth the money. Sure, most of the levels in 100 Mario are crap, but still pretty fun and a good format when commuting.

An early 3DS exploit used special QR codes for the level editor in a game to run unsigned code. Making it difficult to share specific levels prevents something like that from spreading much.

They probably should have called this Super Mario Player, not Maker.

I'm really sick of seeing criticism towards this game. Yeah, congratulations you have a Wii U and you're better than everyone. For the rest of us with only a 3DS, at least they gave us something. I am really enjoying it!

This is the most ridiculous comment ever. This game is a horribly crippled, bad version of the game. It has nothing to do with anybody having a Wii U and you not having one. It's a bad game. Don't take it personally.

I saw this for cheap recently and was tempted, but I wasn't sure how different it was from the Wii U version. Thank for for helping me make up my mind.

This is profoundly disappointing. I would get codes and download levels for offline play, and would totally use the online features when I have wifi access. Hell, I'd fucking make levels and upload them until the servers get shut down!
