Looks tired and aged.

It reminds me of playing a FPS years ago say on the Q3 engine or even Monolith's old Lithtech engine with flat textures, and zero destruction.

I always suspected that this game would live in the FPS depths if it was released on the 360/ps3/pc and it kinda looks like my suspicions were bang on.

I agree the game does look pretty average but Wii FPS controls are not that bad. It takes time to adjust to a new control scheme but after a few minutes, you get used to it. It felt weird playing Halo after spending so much time with Metroid Prime 3.

Also, it felt like Jeff started the game expecting it to be bad without really giving it a chance.

I'm sure the controls can be customized to make it better, but there are some things that surely can't be changed. Like when you use the targeting and have to re-aim. That's a total bummer and I'm not sure there's any way to fix that due to the way the Wii Remote works compared to a mouse or gamepad.

The zoom seemed weird though, and that's something that should be easy to fix. Maybe there's an option for that, but a better zoom should be the default.

Like Ryan said, you can probably adjust to those things, and once you do it's probably pretty good. But it doesn't make a great first impression.

Is the game even worth all the playing around with the controls though.

Its a pretty basic FPS with an ok sounding story (?). It may be the best FPS on the Wii but frankly that is not saying much.

Now, on to the topic of customizing the controls. It's cool that you can, but you shouldn't be forced to do it in the middle of the action. How are you supposed to fight off enemies when you're still trying to set the game up so that you can? All they had to do was bring you to a separate area where you could set up the controls and test them out without worrying about the consequences, and then drop you back into the game when you've finished. Surely that wouldn't have been hard.

" I think a lot of the hate for this game is pretty much just hate for the Wii in general.  It's the same stuff we see in every QL or almost anything else you see on this site related to the Wii.  The fact is, most people who own a Wii and like it probably don't read and don't care to read GB, they read reviews on Amazon or see a commercial during NCIS and make a decision based on that.

It seems like a majority of the people who come to GB are either indifferent or generally hostile towards the system itself, and they take every opportunity to jump into one of these threads and bash a system they don't really care about.  QLs like this, where neither Jeff or Ryan seem to give 2 shits about the game or making an effort to learn the controls (Jeff way more than Ryan, but I've kind of come to expect that from Jeff), just add fuel to their fire.

Anyone who is excited about Natal who doesn't think the same kind of control based issues are going to come with it as well are fooling themselves.  For Natal to work properly for all users, just like the Wii, there will have to be some level of customization for each user who plays the game, based on things like the person's mobility, their position in the room, the amount of light in the room, things like that.

Finally, if Conduit didn't come with the level of control customization that it does, those same people bitching about how much you have to customize it to suit your individual tastes would be bitching about how they didn't offer enough ways to customize the controls.  High Voltage wasn't going to win in this situation no matter which route they took. "
This. I can't believe that people are actually complaining that there are options to make the controls more fitting to personal tastes. It's not something that would take 15 minutes, more like 5. and as people saw in the video, it's something that you can change on the fly if you aren't satisfied. Also, i'm sure Jeff is a nice guy and all, but it's been made clear in the past that he doesn't like the wii, and he has gone into pretty much every wii quicklook with the same demeanor, which is expecting it to suck. Just like with comedy, if you go into a game thinking "man this sucks" then it's going to suck, and many of the users of this site have lapped that thinking up. I mean, when a guy actively ignores on-screen prompts telling him what to do, and has to be reminded by the guy sitting next to him that he's "supposed to press plus" what am i supposed to think about the mindset this experienced gamer is going into the game with? The game controled fine enough when I played it at PAX last year, and that was with the default specifications while probably closer to the demo station then would have been ideal, and I had a pretty easy time aiming despite the fact that FPS aren't my cup of tea. The game controlled fine enough when Brad (?) was playing it. Seems that the outlier here is Gerstmann.

Ummmm, you could mess with the controls at the very beginning of the game when there's no enemies?  Or maybe cetain levels require more long range shooting and some areas are more close-range, you could want to change the precision from level to level.

I mean, is that really a dealbreaker?  Compare that to the alternative to every other FPS, jumping into the menu, changing the settings, jumping out the menu to test it, then go back in and back out, back in back out, again and again until you want.

Then again, no other console FPS even bothers to control as fast or as detailed as this game, so of course it'll work fine out of the box for 80% of most people.

No one should say that precision is a problem with this game.  Whatever your tolerance for precision is, this game is more than capable of meeting it.

Other than that, it just seems like a generically designed singleplayer, multiplayer could be good if you're playing with people who know how to play well.

All the talk about the unresponsive controls and yet they didn't even try to play with the customization settings, I get that it is a quick look so they want to show as much of the game as possible but the customization settings is one of the things that makes this game a good game.

Great quick look either way you guys always put a smile on my face, cheers.

The environments remind me of a PS1 fps, not a whole lot of detail or interactivity going on.

I get Jeff's complaints.

The game has a good deal of control lag (like mouse lag, also called display lag sometimes because it's the display that lags behind the control).  Although I didn't think The Conduit was significantly more laggy than other Wii games in this way, they all seem to have some latency added over something like a gamepad or mouse.

The aiming controls aren't so great.  They're not bad, but other Wii games felt better right out of the gate.

I've messed with the options a lot, and it never just feels right to me, maybe it never will.  As far as I can tell there's no way to not have your weapon swinging around the screen, and that's part of my problem.

Sensitivity feels shakey, and if you turn down the sensitivity it's too slow.  Maybe they need some additional filters like other Wii games have to add smoothness, but that would add more display lag.

You know, I agree with the people saying they should've adjusted the controls before starting the quick look, because I think they wanted to change the size of the turning area, but didn't find that option. However, from what I can gather from this QL, even if it controls perfectly, it looks like a game designed a good decade ago.

I'd like to see a cross platform shooter with online multiplayer so we can really see what control scheme is better, stick or motion. And it would be fun to frag 12- year old kids ALL the time <3 Hope they have Wiispeak!

I'm still trying to figure out whether I should be impressed that they've actually pulled off what looks like a reasonably competent shooter on the Wii or puzzled as to why anyone would want to accomplish such a thing in the first place...

Wow, talk about exaggeration. This is no way looks like a PS1 game. Anyone who thinks that must be like 10 years old.

Also, I'm gonna agree that you guys should've done all the calibration stuff before the QL, that way you would've A) enjoyed it more, and B) could've explained to us what the different settings do and how it changes the feel of the game.

@Diamond: You can make it so your weapon doesnt swing around, just decrease your dead zone to 0.

Also, I find that the dead zone in this is amazing.  Playing PC shooters can be difficult because the screen is constantly centered on your weapon, so you cannot shoot enemies in your peripheral vision without having the screen shift, which can, at times, be disorienting.  So long as the DZ isnt too large, the game plays really well.  Though, I have to say, I only became decent at the game during the final scene, so about 8 hours of play time or something.  There were battles earlier on that I had to redo MANY times over because I still wasnt very good at aiming.

Jeff's hatred for the Wii is starting to become grating.

At least other Quick Looks were made after the guys played the game for a while. This feels like "we didn't play this before, and we won't play it anymore after this QL is over!".

I can't believe nobody even mentioned the simple fact that the Wii is not powerful enough to run a game bigger than this. What were you all expecting, f***ing Crysis? I think HVS did a pretty decent job with The Conduit.

Just goes to show that motion controls are a gimick, and the Wii pretty much still sucks.  Can we please consider the Wii fade over? i dont know how anyone over the age of 10 defends the system.

i honestly don't get why everyone's so excited for this game. it reminds me of PC shooters from 1999/2000. i mean sure the wii controls are cool (note to ryan and jeff: you need to make the dead zone smaller for faster/more efficient turning), but if the game surrounding them is this dated and by the numbers, who cares?

Serious answer: people are so desperate for a good FPS on the Wii, and the game has been so hyped to hell and back by that moron at IGN, that there's massive blinders all around.

Y'know, that doesn't look 100% horrible, but it looks janky and dated enough that I'll pass. I like that the gun zoom sound effect is the same as the Half Life menu click sound. I would like to find out what's up with shadowy organization guy. Would a Conduit Endurance Run be too much to ask?
