Re: How The Cold Kills You

Hypothermia is a lowering of the core body temperature below the normal 37 deg C. This lowered temperature affects the rates of all chemical reactions in your body and causes decreased function of basically every organ system. The most significant effects are probably on the heart where heart rate is slowed causing decreased cardiac output and decreased blood pressure.

Also your brain and muscles function worse which tends to make it hard to get somewhere warm.

At a low enough temperature, the heart will stop beating completely and you will lose consciousness with a silent EEG at low enough temperatures.

However to some extent the cold also stabilizes or protects, so people have been brought back from extreme hypothermia with the right treatment.

@blitzrules240: I hope you're the same Blitzrules that posted on IGN all those years ago.

If not, this comment got awkward.

I'll take my answer off-air.

No joke, Abby's the only other person I've ever heard using the same "G for Ground, C for Ceiling" thing that I was taught as a kid. And it's weird, because I'm 40, and she's a widdle baby Millennial person.

Also, the The Fidelio Incident is my least favourite Guns N' Roses album.

@2mello: Heh, spooky timing, because I've been revisiting the Illbleed Super Replay all week!

The best (norn') Irish accents in video games today, rest with the people of Skellige in The Witcher 3. The ones in the above video are not of that quality, but they are quite hard to execute.

Danny should have been in the QL to consult on the accent quality. Also what's a "norn"?

It's how you'd pronounce "northern" if you had a Northern Irish accent.

As an southern Irish person (a country of literally 100's accents within a province) the faux Irish' film and game' accent drives me crackers. You get a lot of faux Northern accents too.

The Norwegian Sea is directly north of Scotland.

Wait... then did the game just use a map of the Shetland islands but give them icelandic names?

No Caption Provided

It did.

Also the names. All of them are Icelandic but none of them are names of actual places, instead they seem to hint to the game's underlying subject matter.

Fjöldamorðin means massacre, dauða means death, hryðjuverkamaður is terrorist, játning is confession, helvíti is hell, friður is peace, and norður írland is -you guessed it- northern ireland.

Technically it IS the UK, although just the tip. The Shetland Islands already have plenty of our own Norse place names, even our own Ireland :P

This is true. I can spot a fake Irish accent a mile away, and while I can't comment on her performance as a whole, Leonora is sporting a pretty terrible fake accent. Not quite Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman in "Far and Away" levels of terrible, but it's pretty grating. The worst fake Irish accents put too much emphasis on the "aar", "oi" and "aah" sounds, and it seems to be the standard technique used by dialect coaches, as it's almost ubiquitous across movies, TV, games, etc.

Stanley does indeed sound genuine, though.

Irish accents remain one of the last great hurdles in video game voice acting.

Oh and emojis are as "millenial" as Facebook at this point y'all. My mom's in her late 50s and her texts to me are flooded with the garbage.

Anyone born after 1982 is a millennial. So that includes Dan, Patrick, Austin, Drew, Ben, and Abby. Dan is like the quintessential millennial.

Dan makes money putting videos on the internet, picks Twitter beefs with famous people for exposure, and is getting married in away that promotes a brand. Dan is why millennials are given a bad reputation.

People have touched on this already, but I'll add my take into the mix. I live in the States, but my parents were born in Belfast and I also have family that live in and around Dublin. I've been over there a bunch of times to visit family, starting in the mid 80s until about 98. To me, Stanley's accent sounds legit, but Leonore seems to be trying to do a northern accent that she's familiar with but not an expert at.

I'm not even halfway through the quicklook so maybe this gets addressed later, but my feeling is that Stanley is from the Republic and Leonore is from the North and somehow the troubles brought them together and they found love regardless of their differences.

Why is everyone so worried about accent accuracy? I'm from Maryland, I say a few words weirdly, but if a movie or game took place in MD and they didn't say "eggs" or "Washington" the same way I do, I wouldn't care. As long as the story is interesting, that's what matters right?

I can't disagree more with the "note/codec v/o should play while walking". I'd much rather sit, listen and read. Rather than when you pick something up, it plays and something else interrupts you. It's even worse when you do get interrupted and the audio cuts out or you walk away from whatever you picked up and it stops playing it.

from what i can find on the internet, the guy is actually Irish, his name is: Glenn Keogh , and the lady is not from Ireland, and has very little about her, except for a facebook comment that says, "you can listen to me be Irish." her name is: Bess Harrison

and people should really lighten up about accents, if not, actually do some research and find out where they are from.
