I can't tell apart real and fake Irish accents.

Why do people care about something that's been around since the 90s in ICQ, AIM, etc.?

There's like a hundred stalagmite/tite mnemonics. My favorite is the tits one.

That about covers all the topics discussed in the comments, yes?

Oh yeah, also, I hate being able to walk around listening to audio logs, because it sometimes cuts them short if you walk away too far, or your character/someone else talks over them, or I don't pay enough attention because I'm already looking around for loot/secret passages and so on.

As a genuine Irish - He is (or is doing a damn good accent) but she isn't (or is from a part of the country I didn't know existed).

As someone who grew up in 80s (Northern) Ireland, the game intrigues me. Thanks @vinny!

EDIT - The subs say 'bullocks', the man says 'bollocks'. Very polite subtitles.

EDIT 2 - If the story's going where I think it's going, neither accent is 'right'. Think Witcher 3's Skellige for something more apt. Oh well.

Yeah that was really bothering me until I saw your comment. As an Englishman I started doubting myself regarding her accent, I didn't want to say anything in case I was completely wrong. :D

I'm genuinely interested in this game but I swear to god if the plot turns out to be "he died in a plane crash and this Iceland is actually his Hell for stuff he did during the Troubles" I'm gonna be pissed.

*Map opens showing "Norwegian Sea"*

Dan: Is that the United Kingdom?

DAN

The Norwegian Sea is directly north of Scotland.

Wait... then did the game just use a map of the Shetland islands but give them icelandic names?

No Caption Provided

It did.

Also the names. All of them are Icelandic but none of them are names of actual places, instead they seem to hint to the game's underlying subject matter.

Fjöldamorðin means massacre, dauða means death, hryðjuverkamaður is terrorist, játning is confession, helvíti is hell, friður is peace, and norður írland is -you guessed it- northern ireland.

The additional line under the title is officially too Millennial. I feel hurt but also intrigued by Abby's hookline technique.

If it's a story revolving around the Troubles, you'd expect northern accents unless there's something in the backstory of the two characters to explain it, and I don't have the game. The northern accent is notoriously hard to pull off, too.

As an southern Irish person (a country of literally 100's accents within a province) the faux Irish' film and game' accent drives me crackers. You get a lot of faux Northern accents too.

This is true. I can spot a fake Irish accent a mile away, and while I can't comment on her performance as a whole, Leonora is sporting a pretty terrible fake accent. Not quite Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman in "Far and Away" levels of terrible, but it's pretty grating. The worst fake Irish accents put too much emphasis on the "aar", "oi" and "aah" sounds, and it seems to be the standard technique used by dialect coaches, as it's almost ubiquitous across movies, TV, games, etc.

Stanley does indeed sound genuine, though.

from what i can find on the internet, the guy is actually Irish, his name is: Glenn Keogh , and the lady is not from Ireland, and has very little about her, except for a facebook comment that says, "you can listen to me be Irish." her name is: Bess Harrison

and people should really lighten up about accents, if not, actually do some research and find out where they are from.

As I mentioned, it's the international short hand 'Orish' brogue that rubs me the wrong way. This is Glenn Keogh's actual real North side Dublin accent:

What you tend to get in a lot TV and film is a more palatable cliche. But yes, probably not worth getting into a tizzy over.

Here to mirror that Abby's subtitle game may have broken into new ground. I haven't even watched the video yet. Was too urgent to make this known.

@emperordahc: everyone from the Midwest believes they don't have an accent. I grew up thinking the same thing until I moved to the east coast and became painfully aware of my own. Now Everytime I go back it's all I can hear

@turboman: Actually, you can't enter the same digit more than once, so in the case with 2 digits needing to be entered but 3 are already known... it's way less than 100. I think it'd be 42 possible combinations?

If they could be repeated, it'd be 10*10=100 like you mentioned. But since they can't be repeated, it'd be 10*9, and since 3 of them are already known, I think it'd be 7*6=42 possible combinations?

THIS LADY'S ACCENT IS THE WORST

She flits between stereotypical Irishness, Scotland, and a bit of Manchester now and then.

@turboman: However, consider that in this puzzle they already know the last three numbers, and the nature of the puzzle is such that no number can be used twice.

So there are 7 possible numbers, twice, so 7^2 = 49. However, within that set no number can be used twice, so remove the 7 "doubles" from within that, and our final answer is 42 - unless I'm dumb and have missed something out.

@bonechompski: Being from the place where the accent is native negates the need for qualifications, no? Then again I'm Irish with a degree in English Lang, which kinda makes me a linguist.

A pretend one, anyway, which is fine for the internet.
