Thought it looked extremely similar to the Van Helsing games when I first saw this on Steam, watching this video just reaffirms that. I couldn't finish the 2nd one so while I do like the look of this game, I don't know if I could play this anytime soon.

This seems super familiar to those Van Hellsing Diablo games.

People have been comparing this to the Van Helsing games, but there are some pretty significant differences.

First, I like to play these games with a controller, and doing so with Van Helsing felt kind of janky. It was obviously an afterthought patched in later. This game feels just as smooth as the console version of Diablo 3--complete with a combat roll to dodge attacks, which is always welcome. Also, you can jump.

Second, Van Helsing had a pretty dense upgrade and skill tree (at least in the first two games in the series). This game doesn't. It's all about the weapons you have equipped--your moves and abilities change based on the weapon type. There is a fairly dense crafting system you unlock at level 16 that allows for a decent amount of variety and customization.

Thirdly, the challenges that pop up (sorta like achievements--kill X guys with a hammer, use this modifier to kill X guys in 120 seconds) in each area add some replayability, and some rewards.

Overall, I think this game is great for the $17 I paid. The story is nonsense (let's get the Witcher guy to do his bland Witcher voice for our generic white dude who hunts monsters...and is definitely not a witcher), but who comes to these kind of games for amazing stories anyway?

If you're hankering for some slicin' shootin' and lootin', pick this up.

I really like this game, the action elements give it enough to stand out from other ARPGs.

Quite differently actually.

This game is more about it's actiony aspects, dodging, comboing attacks, it veers towards hack&slashy designed for a controller. A bit less about gear stats and no skill trees. Van Helsing is much more of a diablo like dungeon crawler point and click kind of game.

The art/characters/world just has zero personality. It feels like it was designed by a video game image matrix and then farmed out to some shop in asia to make.

Controls sound different, Vinny spent enough time describing them, but have zero idea how it plays out without trying it for myself which doesn't look like its worth it.

Been playing this game this week. It's quite a bit of fun, especially if you're into action RPGs, and of course Vran is voiced by Geralt of Rivia's voice actor so that is a nice treat. It's a lot different than Diablo or Van Helsing though, this game focuses more on mobility than typical ARPGs. It feels like it was designed from the ground up for controllers, I tried a mouse and keyboard and it just didn't feel right, but it really clicked when I started with an Xbox 360 controller.

There is also a lot of depth in there with all of the different weapon types, powers, cards, and items you can find as you go through the game.

I'd say it was definitely worth the $20 I paid for it on GOG, but this is going to be a must buy for ARPG fans when it starts going on sale for 50-75% off.

Yup, I've been enjoying playing it with a controller too. Also got it on GOG.

They didn't come across the kinda interesting online feature (even if you play a private match, but play in online mode with region chat) where you can get and share codes for special missions and treasure stuff.

At first this looked incredible generic until the rapier was shown off which seemed kind of fun. Holding down a button to spam a flurry of attacks seems like it would be alright while listening to the latest beast-/bombcast.

12:08 I had to stop and check if I was watching a Witcher video.

Seeing this made me realize I still need to finish Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3.

Looks like diablo mixed with Darksiders 2. I wish the quick look showed more variety of enemies, spiders are the most generic of the generic diablo enemies.

I don't get the Witcher comparisons? It has like nothing in common aside from the protagonist having the same voice actor. It's a Diablo like arpg, just slightly more "actioney" and designed for a controller first.

@oursin_360: The enemy variety is somewhat lacking, there are spiders, vampires, skeletons, gargoyles, elemental glowing balls and specters. They have some variations in looks across those types and different abilities, some interesting some less so.

Eye-core is the pronunciation, I'm pretty sure
In other news, the trope of the spider queen makes no sense to me. That's not how spiders work. It started with Tolkien, and from then on every fantasy thing is like, yes, of course, a hive of spiders, even though spiders are solitary creatures. Really you should be fighting giant ants, like Fallout.

@veektarius: There are varieties of spiders that build small colonies together (pretty cool ones too, have them where my parents live), it's mostly to make bigger stronger more badass webs, still no queen tho :)

19:32 Just a random note about coup de grace, I learned a while back that I and most people mispronounce it because of hyperforeignism. The wiktionary entry mentions the overcompensation as well.

It's kinda nice you can tell if it's a GBEast video or West based on the deck. Vinny never mentions who's sitting in on the video, but Jason does

It's 'coup de grace' not 'coup de gras'...

If you pronounce it as gras instead of grace you're saying 'fatty hit'
