The Giant Beastcast: Episode 149

Sonic Racing is definitely better in my opinion than Mario Kart, but let's not kid ourselves here on one important fact:

None of them can compare to the greatness that is Crash Team Racing. Fight me.

The level of teasing in this ep was fine. Last week was too much for me. Even made me uncomfortable, which has never happened before with the podcast. This week it was back to good-natured. Keep it up!

The MK8 debate was fun! It’s pretty easy to understand where either party is coming from and I love it when Vinny is looking to “start some shit” as Abby put it. Only tried Sonic Racing Transformed once and it’s prob more skill based but I’ve generally had more fun playing MK8 with friends. You either want something more competitive or something that people have an easier time to get into. It’s that simple to me.

(Just don’t go comparing MK8 and Smash Bros too much. Dem be fightin’ words!)

Also the Far Cry-thing as a game not having anything to say, that people seem to be annoyed with. They go into that in the discussion, that’s brought up in large part because of how they presented the game at that first pre-E4 showing. No one expected that game to have anything to say before that. If Doom would’ve had a similar thing happen, it would also have had expectations. Pretty simple. Also, whatever, the game seems fun anyway which they also go into. After them talking about it on here and hearing they streamlined some of my annoyances with the prev games, I might actually check this one out!

Just seems a little much lately.

Sonic Racing Transformed is such an intelligently designed game. Nothing against Mario Kart, but things like being able to avoid every weapon with skillful play, the way that the tracks evolve each lap, the way that drifting works, the variations in vehicle handling, and the simple trick system all put Transformed ahead. I'm pretty disappointed that everyone was jumping down Vinny's throat as he presented valid arguments against Mario Kart and for Transformed. Like, come on guys, that wasn't even a fun-podcast-hyjinx discussion, but more like childish-who-can-shout-louder whining. And for Mario Kart, of all things.

@akotchkoski: I just did a quick scrub through since I was curious: It's the 1/29/2013 Bombcast, and they mention it at about 2:14 when they start the news. Not really a discussion, just some jokes about Dan playing music.

Vinny makes good points about Mario Kart. The game punishes you for being in first, and the skill ceiling comes down as a result. It's odd to me how much everyone else is willing to accept the BS in the game just because it has always been there.

I do think Mario Kart is fun, but there are random elements of it that always push me away. I think I'd like it better if it just had no weapons or items, honestly.

Sometimes I feel like the only one who isn't hyped for the new RDR. First one was fine but it's not even in my top 5 right now of anticipated games for this year.

I'm more looking forward to the new super mega baseball than I am RDR.

Vinny, if you want some 4k power, get the xbox one x. It has consistently been the better performing of the two and has more capabilities.

I have unsubscribed from the beastcast. I don't mind much the girls and Jef being atheist and making it sound like your are kind of dumb if you are not on previous podcast but Jeff unrespectfull constant swearing combining the name of Jesus Christ with fucking really annoys me. I can't take it anymore and I cannot support people with this type of education and rudeness.

I have been a Mario Kart fan since 64 and played most of the franchise's variations over the years, but Vinny's Sonic recommendation convinced me to play it a while back to see if he was right. I'm not really a Sonic fan, but I'm not into a lot of the Nintendo characters in Mario Kart that much either anymore. I think the racing in Sonic is fantastic with a better sense of speed, and I tend to have higher high moments in Sonic, but both games deliver lots of great multiplayer craziness. I think the single player progression Sonic is very well done too with a steady progression of unlocks. The racer choices in Sonic are funny and awesome. I don't play the Football Manager series, but it's hilarious that it's a driver choice in the game, along with Total War (which I do play). The drifting is pretty great, and I like it better than Mario Kart. The tracks are pretty awesome too, like the aircraft carrier from After Burner and the Panzer Dragoon track.

I'm hoping Sega does another cart racer soon because I had a great time with Sonic.

Vinny's right. Mario Kart is worse than Sonic Racing. Especially if you're good and don't like constantly getting fucked in the ass by the rubberbanding.

Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is one of the best arcade racing games ever made

The horn can´t protect you from the blue shell if you can´t hold on to it, and you can´t hold on to it if any of the other racers in the race get a Lightning Bolt power-up which destroys your item. Also there is no defense against that.

Top Tier Mario Kart play.

Huh, I'd never even heard of this Noobz movie. Odd. It's clearly a terrible movie, so not surprised on that front, but the fact that none of the video game stuff I followed at the time ever mentioned it. I'd heard that Bombcast clip of them talking about Dan playing bass and I had no idea what it was in reference to before now.

I was given a Steam controller as a gift a few years ago. I played a JRPG with it just fine. For anything else, it's pretty much garbage. I wish it was just a regular controller. Like, yeah, it can work for games that don't require precise camera controls or whatnot, but a PS/Xbox controller can cover both precise and non-precise categories, so why switch between two when you can just use one overall? I guess for me it's not worth it since I don't couchplay; I'm always right in front of my PC regardless of what I'm playing. And I only use controllers for specific games anyways. I much prefer KB/M when possible.

I "came up" with ketchup on carrots when I was in elementary school and I still stand by it that it was decent. Haven't eaten it since back then, though.

I find it funny that in the previous episode, Sea of Thieves lack of drop in drop out co-op was deemed unforgivable because previous games have solved that problem. But when Vinny criticizes Mario Kart 8 for not learning from Sonic Racing, we get the Nintendo fan club "well, Mario Kart has always been that way" defense.
