The Giant Beastcast: Episode 66

It's number 66, the number of the Beastcast! We talk about how everything around us is changing and how we are all outdated, and how the world is a vampire sent to drain, and also wrestling. Oh yeah, and Eddie Vedder, PlayStation, and Allison Road?

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

For me, the difference with social media sharing is your option of How To consume it. When you went to Aunt Bessie's and she pulled out the holiday slides, you had to sit there while she spent 30 seconds explaining every one and telling some dull anecdote about this man Uncle Jason met on the beach.

When someone posts 100 holiday photos in a Facebook album, I can scroll through and look at them all (if I want to) in about a minute total. Or I could spend longer, should I feel that way inclined. They're happy that they get to show off their holiday to you, and you're happy that you can see what they were up to and immediately move on with your day.

I'm always surprised by how highly this site ranks Mortal Kombat. It's the only game on that list that seems out of place for me.

I love this show. Bakalar, Vinnie, and Alex have great chemistry. I've been working my way through the episodes I've missed so there's your bump in the numbers.

Not a single game you guys listed would be on my personal must play list, but that's not really a surprise. I already know my tastes lie outside the norm.

If I were to make a true list of must-plays I would try to make sure it covers a broad spectrum of different gaming experiences though. It shouldn't just be a list of personal favorites. Having two Mario games but not a single RPG is disappointing.

Then again, I'd rather just read a list of someone's top 10 personal favorites than a list of percieved must-plays, since those often just come down to concessions on what the majority would find acceptable. Like, if I were to pick one RPG to put on a list like that it would probably be Chrono Trigger, even though it's probably not even in my personal top 10 JRPGs, simply because it's widely accepted as a good example of a JRPG. But that also kinda dilutes the value of that recommendation.

My happiest memory of receiving some sort of gaming hardware as a gift is when my grandparents got me a Nintendo Gamecube as an early birthday present when I was a kid. The system was a bundle that came with Mario Sunshine and on the day of my birthday I also got a copy of Smash Bros Melee from my parents. And on top of that, that Gamecube was the first game system I had ever owned myself, all the others I had played up to that point belong to my older brother. I was the happiest kid in the world that day. Thanks Grammy and Grampy :)

Huh. My Nintendo/YouTube question got answered. Sorry the email being semi-incoherent in some spots, I couldn't really think of a solid-yet-concise way to phrase or set up that question.

The idea of a "Top 10 Must-Play Games" list is intriguing as hell to me mostly because aside from like... 3-4 games, the idea of there being a single master list of shit that people MUST play is a mission set up for people to do nothing but argue. I'm super confident that at least one Mario and one Zelda game should probably on that list, but aside from like... Tetris and maybe Pong? It's hard to think of "must-play or what the hell have you been doing with video games" titles, especially when the what the list itself means can be taken for a ride itself. Do they mean the Top 10 best? Top 10 influential? Highest selling? Who knooooows. Just keep it vague as hell, man. Top 10 list that shit, let's just GO. Let the fires spread it's fine, that's called engagement.

I'm very tired.

If they grabbed that Top 10 list, removed Bioshock and Mario Galaxy and added The Last Of Us and Portal, I would agree with it 100%.

Also, thanks Alex for supporting Vice City. I always feel like people never give it enough credit and I will forever defend it as the best GTA game (until they make a better one, after that it's the best GTA game in the PS2 era).

You do realize that a lot of GB fans also like wrestling, right?

This site isn't exclusively videogames...especially during this slow-ass season.

I've spent a lot of my life in Ocean City, NJ as I have some family there. I haven't been there for a couple years, but the arcade scene has definitely gone down from what it once was. Now the mini-golf was amazing!

Also if you're there be sure to stop by my Aunt's spin art t-shirt stand in the pirate themed park there. Get yourself some spin art on a t-shirt and be a cool dude.

Social media talk was quite accurate, and I debated turning all that shit off plenty of times.

But being off Facebook (my only thing) at this point would make me feel like an anomaly. Those instant politicians drive me nuts, the happy birthday strike force people are silly, and there's an abundance of nonsense on there. So I try to limit my posts to once or twice a day.

But despite all that, I live alone and a car drive from any of my friends. So that quick communication seems like a healthier alternative to being silent in my condo on a weeknight when nothing's going on.

i was the shittiest fucking child and ruined my 11th xmas gift of an SNES by peeking at stuff. :( i was the fucking worst.

14th was probably the most memorable though as i grew up a bit and stopped being (as much of) a brat, and my brand new Pentium 75 was the most amazing surprise, and I know my parents probably made quite a few sacrifices to make it happen. Outpost ftmfw(? ok it was a weird game but i still have fond memories of it)

Might be. Her WWE 2K17 video shows Dan interviewing Brock Lesnar 35 seconds in. Lugey's 30-yrs-old though, not the teenager Dan described.

For a definitive film list or one that comes closest to being definitive you should check out The 1,000 Greatest Films by Bill Georgaris. (http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm) The ordering is determined by combining other lists: "The total list of critics/filmmakers polled increased from 3,648 to 3,873. / Additionally, approximately 291 miscellaneous lists were added, taking the complete tally used to 2,834In summary, here is the summarised breakdown of individual ballots used, or if you like, from where I have begged, borrowed and stolen: [a long list of lists]".

Georgaris is always on the lookout for more lists, writing that "the 1,000 Greatest Films’ major shortcoming continues to be that it doesn’t contain as much Asian or African cinema (or for that matter, cinema outside of North America and Europe) as it should. However, hopefully the subsidiary list of another 1,000 films, as well as the comprehensive starting list document of nearly 15,000 films goes some way to compensating this."

Another problem is the preference of older movies in the compiled lists. Accounting for that Georgaris created another list of 1000 films The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films. (http://www.theyshootpictures.com/21stcentury.htm)

These are great resources, updated yearly and should be a great starting point for times when you can't decide what to watch. Just use a random number generator and let it pick a film for you. Discovered some weird, some bad and mostly great ones.

Have to inform I use paper towels for my nose. It's easy and efficient, just split the 'choose a size' small towel, and split it along the grain into halves. It works real well, kitchen garbage a foot away.

So have you never actually been sick? If you need to blow your nose repeatedly, paper towels will irritate the shit out of the skin on your nose. Will be very red and very painful quickly.

Haven't thought of that. I don't rub my nose much, I am prone to sinus infections (just dodged one really well!) and mild allergy. Usually clear my sinuses first thing in the morn, and my new AC with filter is helping a lot.

Doesn't seem a factor, do see your point.

Wow, thanks for the hot tip about the premium sale, Vinny. Mine just ran out and I was being all responsible by not immediately resubbing because I just bought the new WoW expansion, but was tempted to do it anyways. Now I know I only have to wait a bit.

While that Top 10 list was wildly different from what I'd say (probably), the biggest thing is that I would personally put a Super Smash Bros game on there somewhere, with the caveat of only if you get to play it with other people.

My best video game-related surprise presents would be when I got a GameBoy Pocket with Pokémon Red for my birthday, N64 for Christmas, and original Xbox for Christmas. The Xbox was the biggest surprise; we had absolutely zero clue that was coming.
