In my drinking years, I didn't even have to ask for a beer. The barman would see me walk in and say "Guinness, Dave?" and I'd nod.

Walk into a bar over here and ask for a pint, you'll get poured a Guinness or a Harp depending on the religion of the landlord.

I would love to see some curation by the giant bomb people maybe the things you give 4 or 5 stars too? Yes some curation are stupid but that is for us to decide the ones to follow. I happen to follow some all anime curators but then I like anime so...

and wow that kojima *&*^ kojima trailer. Just wow. Definitly symbolic (the baby in the tube winking and the doll at the end winking) but symbolic of what - hell if I know. Would love to have a Dan (as your resident kojima expert) analysis of the trailer. Would be hilarious and likely also educational.

And Jeff is wrong on Ghost in the Shell as usual - sigh...

Also isn't Scott Backular in one of the CSI's now cyber or something?

As for Nintendo not understanding the internet - yeah they don't but not because they are Nintendo but because they are a Japanese Company. Maybe the 8/4 podcast people can talk about this (cross podcast with them?) but Japanese companies generally don't understand the internet - anime is a GREAT example of that. May have something to do with "face" issues of Japanese companies. Not something I am an expert on but it is a larger problem than just Nintendo.

And how great would it have been if the Backelar question was just where did he come from "well when my father really love my mother ...." Italian and Jews going back *snicker* stealth wwII joke?

Some games do still use the enemies you are more powerful than run away. Ni No Kuni for example. But yes not many.

Ha I wondered why they were showing a picture of a local hair place near me! We have a Streaks Ahead and an Ali Barbers near as well... seriously!

I think @Jeff would like Psychopass. It has tech that he's mentioned as wanting in their holo clothes and a dark creepy near future vibe.

Gundam 00 (First series) I think is a legit good show as a non anime connoisseur if people are interested in trying a gundam thing as I was recently.

Birmingham represent in this thread I see. I'd never thought of it before but they do love putting a pun in the name of a business round these parts. There's a Chinese restaurant in Shirley called Shirley Temple and on Kent Street in Gornal there is the wonderfully named Kent's Tuck Inn Fried Chicken.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex has aged much better then the movie IMO. If anyone has ever been interested in watching it go into it completely blind you don't need to know anything about the movie.

Going to agree with @corvidus Jeff would probably like Psycho-Pass a lot more, definitely a lot darker in it's police state regards and deciding how to deal with citizens.

I'll keep you guys updated on the salon name :p

PS: I just got to the end, and I love how Drew didn't give up...@drewbert the salon will be near a pub, so Craft Shear sounds appropriate, but we'll see

Cheers o/

Be careful with some of those for trademark issues (I am an IP lawyer) - if you happen to want to make sure you don't cause yourself any trademark issues/trademark your name. BoldIP would love to help you!

Ordering beer is really simple in Finland as well. You actually only need one word to make your order, for example "olut" (beer) or "tuoppi" (pint). Literally, just say that to a bartender and the only response is usually the price once they've poured a mug of whatever's on tap at said establishment.

Man when people talk about Ghost in the Shell and its always those original movies. I didn't really like them, but Stand Alone Complex (the GITS series) was awesome. If someone is interested in jumping into a GITS thing that would be what I'd recommend. Though like Vinny always says, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (or the original, but I liked Brotherhood more) is the best recommendation to people who don't really watch any anime.

@kerse: Yup. Stand Alone Complex is what pushes GiTS into legendary status. The movies were amazing for the time, and I can understand how people might not enjoy the pacing today (in the same way that some people dislike the pacing of Blade Runner,) but Stand Alone Complex is something else. I really doubt the upcoming live-action adaptation is going to capture the number of complex and forward-looking themes explored in the anime. It was one of the first major piece of media that really explored post-humanism and post-gender for me, and I'm afraid that people will see the new movie and think it's just another instance of "sexy ninja lady doing sexy things."

It's also funny to hear Jeff talk about older anime, because compared to today, the budgets for those anime were significantly higher! Today, anime is produced on a shoe-string budget, but computers have made the whole thing so much cheaper and easier to make. For example, the hand-drawn explosions from old anime are so much better and have so many more frames of animation than the ones we get nowadays.
