About AMD and Intel Cpus.

You are so wrong about game performace.

There is maye a 2 frames difrence in average on benchmarks.

Intel is losing it big time, I moved to AMD site for the first time and not loking behind.

it's so crazy to me that both of these consoles basically dont have any launch exclusive games. Has this ever happened before in a history of a launch?

@99bajakid: Demon’s Souls is a bigger exclusive than any launch exclusive on the PS4 or Xbox One.

And the Switch. Because if Spiderman MM doesn’t count as a launch exclusive since it’s also on PS4, then BotW wasn’t a Switch launch exclusive since it was also on WiiU.

"Big Navi" is colloquially referring to it being the 'big' die/chip version of 'Navi' (which is the family codename for the most recent generation of AMD GPUs. Similarly, "Big Maxwell" was the colloquial name for the bigger Maxwell GPU (GM200) used on the 980ti and TitanX cards, distinguishing it from the smaller Maxwell chip (GM204) used on the 970 and 980 cards. The main reason for the existence of a colloquial name is because the community anticipation of the GPU tends to precede the confirmation of an official codename or SKU.

You don't hear the "big" designation as much anymore for Nvidia's chips because they've added an even bigger tier which is datacenter-only. Ignoring those datacenter chips: 1080ti/TitanXp would be 'big Pascal' (GP102), 2080ti/TitanRTX would be 'big Turing' (TU102), and 3080/3090 would be 'big Ampere' (GA102).

Damn, I forgot about the switch launch lineup, that one was pretty underwhelming as well. I waited until Mario odyssey came out and splatoon 2.

@kopcik: if you only game and overclock, then the top end intel cpus are the way to go for now, then it's amd for everything else. intel do give better support and devs are still intelcentric

@illmatic19: It is modern hardware that precisely emulates old hardware - so unlike say a software emulator that will end up improving performance in some cases and making things faster, the Mister is also emulating all the technical limitations so you end up getting the exact same experience as if you were playing the real thing. I get the appeal of it but buying into somewhat expensive modern hardware to realistically emulate much slower and older hardware down to the slowdowns and whatnot has always seemed extremely masturbatory to me.

I have a full AMD set up. Ryzen 7 and Vega 64. I have had very few problems with it. Frostpunk on Ultra has been the only major issue.

I live in Belgium and one of the big news networks dedicated a segment to the PS5 after the price got announced and went to stores for interviews, something they didn't do for the Xbox.
So my guess is that Sony must have done something right in this entire mess because people really want it.

The Playstation event was kind of a mess. Just like every other event since Jim Ryan started running things. The whole "we believe in generations" thing was just an absolute lie.

They couldn't even be bothered to tell us which games were going to be available at launch.

Also games are 80 Euros over here. I think I might wait this whole launch out.

They did release Final Fantasy 15 on PC in an complete edition. Meaning it had most of the DLC except Adrian's episode which came later. In fact, it was the PC Version that I played of the game.

As far as the PS5 pre-orders, I got the invite to order one from their direct website. Funny thing is, I wasn't unable to get the Disc Version, but was able to order the Digital Only version which sold out shortly afterwards. That was kind of odd, but I got in. The only setback with the digital PS5 is that a very small percentage of my games is disc only, but will be covered with the PS Plus free access they have going on. The only game I have that it doesn't cover is Spiderman, which I got for a gift. Will likely have to purchase it during a sale digitally. Or I might just get the Miles Morales bundle that includes it.

Whatever Brad, I'm gonna live the RTX 3090 life and you can't stop me!

@uriarra-heap: I would say, unless you are so called "enthusiast" there is no point to buy intel cpu.

In my humble opinion the best combo for high end setup at the moment is a Ryzen with Nvidia 30xx gpu, anything above is for people that enjoy looking at numbers going up :), but the "real" experience will be pretty much the same.

@jeff@vinny Synergy is the bomb for using a single mouse and keyboard across multiple PCs. I've been using it regularly for several years. Highly recommended!

an FPGA chip is a processor that can act like other processors, like the ones in classic consoles. This is cool because it makes games run exactly right, as if they're played on actual hardware. So in that sense it's better than emulation.

The MiSTer is a little board with an FPGA chip on it. Kind of like a Raspberry Pi or an Arduino board if you know what those are. Basically the MiSTer is a tiny computer that hobbyists have made this amazing retro game system around.

@brad regarding DisplayPort monitor detection (you may have heard all this already but I'm giving it a shot anyway): Do you have the option to disable DDC/CI on your monitors connecting via DisplayPort? That solved the issue in my use case where I often switch my monitor between multiple inputs but want it to stay recognized on all machines that are connected to it. In case sleep mode still triggers the hotplug event, you may have to disable any eco/power saving mode on the monitor.

A legendary GOTY caliber game remade with top of the line tech? Yes.

Also, Sony is not charging $70 for all PS5 games. That price point only applies to PS5 only games. Their cross-gen games are less. So far that is only Demon's Souls and Destruction All Stars. The Miles Morales is only $70 if you want the package that includes the remastered first game.

Spiderman: Miles Morales is $50 solo, not $40 like Uncharted Lost Legacy was. Their prices are all up by $10 across the board on cross-gen games, next-gen games, and accessories. That's how they cover losing so much money per console.

@jeff Charlotte's alright. Born and raised in nyc, came to charlotte 5 years ago. Housing is way more affordable, BBQ is alright. I have no freaking clue if im ever going to get back in the Red Ventures offices with all this freaking covid, but the city is small enough that i dont have a crazy commute anymore (it was 2+ hours for me in NYC) when i am going in. You're not gonna have the _culture_ of an SF or NYC, but i've kinda moved past my 'working and partying in a big city' phase and i just want a damn house and a yard and a good school for my kid.

We got that google fiber too. Come hang man.

@bill_mcneal: I'm usually very cynical, but personally I'm quite hyped fo the new generation and GB has been harping on about it 'not being the right time for them' and that no one is going to buy them. I don't need constant HYPE TRAIN but some enthusiasm for them would make it more fun to listen to.

@kazzerscout: 😅, I know what you mean. Sometimes they can be overly negative, or constantly 'pile it on' and unrelenting from time to time.

But I didn't know if it was that, or because they can occasionally get a little "too into the weeds" on occasion. I haven't been in the PC crowd for a long while and I tend to lose focus when they talk about it at length.

@curufinwe: almost incomparable because of the amount of ps4's vs the amount of wii U's owned.
I can bet playsation wont be porting over every ps4 game to ps5 just so people will actually play them
for most people, mariokart 8 and every other wiiu port was a brand new game.

@bill_mcneal: I decided to listen to this show at work today and thankfully they seem a little more excited for the machines at the moment. The best parts of Hotspot though are when they go into the weeds on specific PC hardware for me - hard drives, storage, graphics cards etc.

Listening to this at work and the entire merger talk had me gritting my teeth. Absolutely can't wait to see what AMD can do soon. Like Brad said it's been super exciting on the CPU side between Intel and AMD

I was fixing to get myself a digital edition of the PS5. The one with the disc looks hideous in comparison, and I live in a country with internet and no bandwidth caps, so the choice was pretty simple.

Then the Oculus Quest 2 thing happened.. And I ended up with one of those. Getting a PS5 down the line though. Maybe I'll just wait until there's more known about what path Sony is taking with VR going forward. Also, 10 bucks more pr game doesn't sound great. That probably means 70 for the game and then 50-70 more for the season pass... Not gonna be doing that.

Exciting but ridiculous time right now.
