Unfinished: Dishonored 2 09/29/2016

If vape rings are the future of alt-history, things are going to get a whole lot more chaotic around here.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Just got the ps4 version of Dishonored 1, got Clean Hands and Ghost on the main quest and both episodes of the DLC, with the difficulty all the way up.

So... I'm looking forward to this. A lot.

Woah. Hello there. I fell off of Dishonored after 5 or so hours. I wonder if Dishonored 2 will sway me into trying this one out.

Brad not bouncing off Dishonored because he was paralyzed by choice is such a Brad thing.

And I liked Dishonored. Not usually my type of game but it did draw me in. Being free helped too. Only bummer is playing non-lethally and not getting to command rats to eat people. Playing as Emily does seem pretty interesting though. But I am swayed by how cool she looks.

I played a bit of the first when it was free on Gold, but didn't finally go through it until I got the remaster version on the One. Great game overall. I haven't gone through it on hard, though I may closer to two's release. I wasn't a fan of the two Daud DLC's, which I played on and off, finishing it up months after I had finished the main game. I'm excited for two, but not super hyped.

I don't remember what it was, but I think my biggest issue with the first was that, as someone that always wants to have the positive, good ending, I felt forced to go non-lethal stealthy, when so much of the stuff you get in terms of variety had to do with being lethal. I generally like to play that way anyways, but I wish it was all equal for what you can do.

I was kinda hoping this game would differentiate itself more from the first one than it appears to be. Kind of a bummer. I was not especially into that one. Oh well.

As someone who really loved that first Dishonored, I am more than okay with this second one being more of that.

EDIT: Probably worth mentioning, the slide was totally also in the first game.

@ntm: The game is actually pretty forgiving in regards to chaos, I found that you can kill a ton of people before it bumps you up to High Chaos, and even then if that's an issue for you, you can just play less violently for a mission or two and it would bump back down. Not to mention changing your entire playstyle over a 10+ hour game just for the sake of getting a different 2 minute cutscene isn't really worth it, imo :P

I am a little worried by the talk of framerate hitches. Dishonored 1 on consoles was only 30fps but it was a rock solid 30fps, I'll be really bummed if 2 doesn't perform just as well on my PS4.

@rufflemyridges: Sure, and that's what another playthrough is for if you want that (I want to see the good ending on my first playthrough), but it also doesn't change the fact that the way I want to play, which is stealthily and non-lethal, it doesn't give me as many options to do that.

I totally don't remember the slide being in the first game. Could you attack while sliding in the first one? They seemed to put a little emphasis on "hey, check out this slide attack" at the event.

I dunno why this game just does nothing for me, I never played the first one even though I bought it on Steam, but I love the at style I think it looks amazing.... I just don't want to play it lol. I have a really hard time getting into Single Player games in general though, they have to be something that really appeals, everything I usually play is just online competitive like Overwatch.

Wow, I just realised that the writing for the clockwork soldiers "status speech" (voiced by their creator) is in exactly the same style as placeholder audio for debug NPC AI triggers in previous Harvey Smith / 'Shock & Thief games. That's a very specific in-joke. You can find examples of these if you dig around the SND archives in System Shock 2, for instance.

Always wondered why the devs didn't let you knock people out instead of killing them during a fight. Like, hit them with back of your blade, way of the peaceful samurai type shit. I feel like that would go a long way towards addressing people's issues with the chaos system. But that might make stealth less attractive.

Game development is hard.

I shouldn't be wathcing this, but I already watched the high-chaos clockwork trailer so...

EDIT: Jason is wrong at ~20min, he could have gone out over that balcony (and almost did).

I guess most of the charms are hidden 'behind the walls' (e.g you must jump into back areas as the rooms change from one config to another).

@brad3000: Hm. Maybe I just don't remember then. I see now in this YouTube video. I'll have to check. I played the Xbox One remastered version, and I don't remember being able to sprint then duck to slide (which is the usual way to slide in games). Unless it's an ability you get. It is also possible that, with the way I played, I never tried to slide. Not sure, I'll have to check I guess. Heck, I'll do so now...

Edit - Also, funny enough, I didn't notice that I was replying to Jason.

Edit 2 - Wow, yep. You can totally slide. I guess I forgot about that. I never really did it, that's probably why. And I guess to answer his question, yes you can slide, as well as attack as you slide.

I lost interest in Dishonored at about the halfway point. I had unlocked most or all of the stealth abilities and my approach to the levels started to feel very repetitive. I was also disappointed by a bunch of small things, like doors or grates you should clearly be able to go under/through as a rat, but can't because it's not designed that way. The freedom of approach felt way more limited to me than it seemed to come across to other people.

That said, I just picked it up on Steam for $10 to give it another chance before 2 comes out and I'm really enjoying the early chapters. Perhaps I judged it too harshly the first time out, or maybe I just haven't gotten far enough to see the flaws that drove me away last time.

@brad3000: Same. I tried to finish this game without takedowns. Just passing by all dudes and killing targets in "accidents". And you can do that! You have to pass some side quest but it can be done. I never finished it - just lost interest. Probably my playstyle killed it for me, but game incentivise you to not kill people and leaving knocked out bodies felt wrong when you plan to kill targets in accidents.

It's always weird for me how a ton of people just didn't get into the first game. Much like Jason I was completely enamoured by the aesthetic and architecture of the world. I simply love seeing the clockwork at play even though I'm not that huge into steampunk.

This looks real good but I think at first blush it seems almost TOO familiar. A lot of the exact same sound cues and such. It's a hard balancing act to make a sequel that feels fresh but not entirely divorced from the source material and it seems like maybe they leaned a bit further one way than the other. When Deus Ex was coming out I was gung-ho for just more Deus Ex. Now 25+ hours into that game I really do wish it was more than simply more of the same as I find it harder and harder to pull myself back in and finish that out. I'm afraid that as much as I liked Dishonored I might experience something similar in the sequel - in inescapable feeling of simply going through the motions.

I simply thought it was a rather bad stealth game. I've played through half of the game (I think) and nothing really caught my attention. SO yeah I agree that this looks way too familiar. Darkness powers looks neat though.

Was really into the original game for the first 4 or so hours and then just kinda got bored. It might have been that i was distracted, or playing something else (in that release window 2012 it probably would have been the Dark Souls DLC). I'd want to revisit the original but on the PC instead of the PS3 before giving the sequel a try.

@civid: I thought it was a pretty good stealth game with some weird design choices that held it back from being great. My biggest pet peeve was that you never knew when your were actually hidden. The game doesn't employ any sort of light crystal or iconography that would indicate your status in regard to the guards which can be frustrating in a first person game. Other than that I really enjoyed all the powers and as I said the world was really wonderful.
