Unfinished: Marvel Heroes Omega 04/26/2017

If Jeff and Jason had a super power, it'd probably be making lots of numbers fly out of things.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Something about Jeff always sticking with Cap in this game amuses me.

Anyway they ruined/neglected the PC version of this game for this. I hope it's good for console peeps but after like 1600 hours in the PC version I'm pretty done!

I have spent some money on the PC version and played for quite some time. The problem I've always had with this game is that they change so much, so often, that it doesn't feel stable. Why would I put money in to this when they could completely change the skill tree in 3 months?

Sure, they allow you to respec but when I bought Hulk I had a lot of fun playing him. Now I'm not. So that money feels wasted currently but I did get some enjoyment out of the game in the past so I guess that's enough?

Regarding the menu/vendor nonsense, I would imagine a lot of that comes from transitioning a very old MMO from PC to console. On PC they bolted on a ton of systems on top of what was already there to start to keep the game interesting and expanding. For those players you just had to learn one or two new things at a time. But if they're moving most of that over to the console at once I imagine a new player is going to be overwhelmed with systems.

Though amusingly it looks like they're planning to parcel out the already-made skins over time to keep people buying things.

Largely agree on the "wish the developers were better about explaining changes since I last logged in" deal. I've play F2P games like Marvel Heroes and Warframe for like two weeks once each year. Every time I come back I feel overwhelmed by the changes. I usually end up going to the game's subreddit to see if anyone had written/updated any introductory guides since I last played. If I can't find anything, at least I can crawl through a year's worth of patch notes for anything notable, I suppose.

I've been playing this game on PC since the beginning. It's totally worth your time and plays great on a controller if you pick the right character. Can't wait for couch co-op.

Jason should try Daredevil.

I really enjoy the Jason/Jeff videos. I feel like they're typically more straightforward & informative, while still feeling laidback and fun. Maybe that's because they tend to include Jason with games that are in his wheelhouse, but I'd like to see more of it (but maybe they need to hire another video person to first to free up his time).

For anyone curious, calling the Taskmaster Institute seems to connect you to a conference call service. Didn't seem to be anyone else on the line -- or my nasally "H-hello? I would like to know how to focus my thirst for revenge, mister Taskmaster, sir" line stunned everyone else into confused silence.

Also, yeesh. There's something about an MMO game like this that just feels very....2003-ish. Seven different Deadpools running around like maniacs, pulling off drive-by buffings of randoms in the street; a dozen soulless mooks standing stock-still and rhythmically firing pistols into Captain America, who just eats several gunshots to the face while simultaneously punching the unmoving, uncaring mooks until they deflate like wavey-tube men before a handful of identical Captain America masks explode from thier bodies....

And yet, I still really, REALLY want a worthy successor to the City of Heroes games to get made. :b

This made me want to install the pc version again I started after the new changes and got scarlet witch to like 47 or something but there was so much loot which is hardly a bad thing but I spent most time dropping stuff or ignoring it unless it was purple or better.

Scarlet witch is a god damn joy to play. The screen lights up like a gooddream damn flashback that is purple is going off every nanotechnology second.

I installed Diablo 3 the other night to scratch my loot itch and I have a 70 of each class and just couldn't get into it until the necromancer comes out.

Been playing eternium on mobile which is a Diablo lite game and having some decent fun with it. You get minions and there's tons of in game stuff but the systems in place make you pretty strong.

Think I'll install this again and see if I can get 60 with witch.

That mysterious "angel lady" is Angela, and it's quite weird and cool that she's been added to the game.

The short-ish story on her: Neil Gaiman created her when he wrote an issue of Todd McFarlane's Spawn a couple decades ago. Since Image Comics was all about creator rights, there was an assumption that Neil owned Angela, at least partially, until years later when things got very acrimonious between McFarlane and Gaiman about lots of stuff. A judge ended up granting Neil Gaiman FULL rights to Angela in a lawsuit.

Neil has been licensing Angela to the Marvel universe (McFarlane's old employer) and donating all the royalties to charity, specifically to piss Todd off.

Comics are a nasty business. And I still love 'em.

Watching Jeff sort through his inventory for 5 minutes after a single boss wave in MM is exactly the authentic Marvel Heroes experience I remember, lol. Yeah, they've fixed almost none of the glaring design issues this game has had for a long time.

Looking forward to the open beta so I can get some good Cap action in.

The revamped Avengers Tower in the video is the same as the PC version, as they revamped it to make it easier to find everything, I assume. The inventory stuff is still the worst part of the game on PC, as it's tedious to figure out how various equipment compares along with all of the crafting and non-equip stuff that also takes up room. Diablo III RoS UEE is definitely a much better overall game, but Marvel Heroes is still good as a free option for those that want their Marvel fix.

Jeff and Jason talking about comic characters just makes them seem like out of touch old men.

It's annoying how they keep saying "has it always been this way?" or "was it like that on PC?" and then the other says "i think so" and they're both wrong.

They always have the same conversations when they return to an online game they haven't played in a while. "Oh man, stuff's different! Let's just talk about how returning to online games is hard cause things change."

The way that these guys are covering stuff these days is really bumming me out. Why cover a game if you don't know what you're talking about and you're just gonna misinform folks?

The menus definitely seem more clunky than on the PC, but everything looks a lot more cool some how. I like the way the health and power bars look in this version, and they made all the skill icons look a lot better, and I like the 3D close ups of the characters in the character select menu. It all looks a lot more flashy. I kind of want some of this stuff in the PC version.

I have been enjoying my time with this game on PS4 thus far. As far as the story goes, anytime you are on a teleport pad you can just press square to go to wherever your current objective is. Pressing R1 also will lock onto enemies. He also seems to fight every enemy in instanced content as opposed to what I did which is just travel/run past all of it since the mobs don't leash very far and just go to the boss. There are also I think 4 difficulties for the story mode so it is meant to be played multiple times (like diablo torment levels) so the first run through of the game is going to feel pretty easy. The actual gameplay feels good and there seems to be a ton of content to do. PC players are actually kinda salty because things that were promised to be fixed on that version (currency consolidation/character rebalance/UI fixes) are fixed in the console version but has yet to be patched into the PC iteration. So I don't know about the whole PC version being superior at this point is actually that true. Although I am sure they will patch stuff in and will launch with a "vanilla version" then just have updates with stuff that has been out on the PC for a bit if he means the PC version being superior due to more content. People looking to scratch that Marvel Ultimate Alliance itch will probably be really into this actually. The item descriptions and vendors could use some work to help you not feel like youre wasting items by donating to people you might not need to be. Im at level 26 playing Spiderman and I am actually really into it because now the enemies are starting to use more advanced abilities and the environment comes into play somewhat in their "boss room". The thing that will probably make or break it outside of the obvious server side tech issues is the pricing. I believe each will cost between 450-1350 "G" aka real money currency (1000 G on PS4 store is $10) or 200-600 of the in game currency (eternity splinters). I believe it drops around 5 mins of playing regardless of the activity and probably from specific max level content maybe? However, I think they are giving out daredevil for free (PS4 wise) to everyone to at least be able to see what the game has to offer when it launches. This post (https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/319175/marvel-heroes-omega-console-q-a) goes into more specifics and also states what kind of modes/content there is to do. I also just found a vendor with a prestige item, where you can reset your max level 60 character to 1 (retaining gear/items/diablo 3 like prestige stats) and you get a new color for the font of your name for others to see. It also looks like you get some cosmetic items tied to it as well (PC wise, but may make it into console?). I also feel as though the lag is really bad/unbearable in some spots in the beginning areas (1-10) because people are trying out new heroes and seeing who they like so there are far more people in those zones. In the open world areas I have been in now the lag is far less noticeable but there are also maybe 3-5 people around as opposed to the clusterfuck of people that I encountered in the earlier areas. Not saying this is the absolute reason for the lag issues but it cant help. Forgot to mention that costumes are sold individually (unless you buy a pack to get into closed beta, then I think it comes with 2 alternates) and can range from 750G-1200G and I do not believe you can buy them with in game currency (in the closed beta currently anyway). I am really optimistic for the console version of this game actually.

Agreed although returning to online games can be hard it would have made a lot more sense if theres no plans to really research what is going on with the game or the changes from the PC version than they should just put some people that have no experience with the game whatsoever on these unfinished or quick looks so we can get a completely fresh take.

I had about 700 hours total on Marvel Heroes on PC but havent played in about a year for no real good reason i just kind of fell off. But this PS4 version has alot of potential so i may check it out.

Diablo 3 is WAY better than this. The big thing about these sorts of games is getting loot and making your character look cool while they kick ass. Well loot in this game has no cosmetics. All that you have to pay real money for each outfit and the way they handle that is kind of klunky too.

Also the loot itself makes very little sense. In Diablo you had a few stats and then you'd get maybe one skill specific boost on a piece of gear and then a couple of other abilities on a piece of gear. Overall you'd have at most 6 bonuses on a piece of gear but they all make perfect sense when you read them what they do and how much they help you. In the Marvel game gear can have 1 to like 15 different bonuses. They all affect different minor systems in the game and as the game randomly generates them and how many bonuses they have there's no real good way to build a character along a set path that you want. In Diablo the 6 bonuses you can get are split up into 2 categories and you'd get up to 3 of one of them and up to 3 of the others. In Marvel it's just bonus soup and it's all random all the time.

Gameplay wise and story wise this game's just fine. The most recent update though confused the living hell out of me so I haven't really been back since. Also they have now completely gutted and overhauled the character systems like three times now. (not real sure why they even did this most recent one, no one seemed to like it when they did it)

Just a few things to clear out some confusion.

The inventory system when you first start out in MH is overwhelming but you will eventually hit a point where you can start filtering out loot for cosmic/unique gear, so it's less of an issue. There is a "junk" mechanic in the game, but it requires you to use the pet slot, which will vacuum-up loot for you and in return will unlock additional stat points.

They had to do a stat/skill/power squash since it was getting out of hand. Each character gets bonuses from two stats that are defined in the power/talent tree menu -- it's pretty obtuse, but stats are typically always better when comparing loot and always aim for +Crit gear.

You need to remember that this game has like 60 heroes in it, so don't expect Diablo 3 gear mechanics that define individual kits. This has a different flow in combat and overall pacing.

The original idea of Quick Looks was something like "show what it'd be like if some dudes opened up a game, stuck in the disc and started playing. Or not." Not saying I disagree or agree, just that GB isn't generally the place for good info. At least not in videos, seems like half the time they don't even know the price of a new release ^_^

@aishan I think it depends on if you like Marvel or not. D3 is probably the better all-around game, but if you like the Marvel setting then this one is pretty solid.

Im not sure i understand what your getting at if the game was actually better shouldnt they be able to game the system so that they can show people that they have improved or if they havent improved

That's actually an interesting point about this whole issue. Most reviewers and pretty much all review aggregators do not allow for "re-reviewing" of games after a major patch or something similar.

In that regard, it might seem "fair" to allow developers/publishers to "game the system" by re-releasing the game with a slightly different name but imho that shouldn't be the solution. I'd like it way more if they stand by their past fuck-ups and improve from there, instead of trying to "erase them away" like the game has always been perfect. But for that to actually work, more reviewers and especially review aggregators need to adapt their practices accordingly by giving games a new look after they've gone trough some major patching.

Anyway, this whole situation doesn't actually apply here because this is a release on a new platform and as such will get its own, fresh, reviews.

My problem with playing the game on PC, and it looks like this is no different on console, is the mmo-ness of it. Those big areas are such a mess, enemies respond all over the place, too many other players running around. If you could play the entire game in either a single-player or a party instance, I would like it more. Also so much of the systems in the game are confusing.

I was looking forward to seeing Jason and Jeff play this co-op, that was a bummer they couldn't get it to work .
