@afashionablehat: Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten about that as well. Absolutely 100% agreed.

Why are ui getting more obtrusive this ui is the only thing that I don't like about the game, I like the fox engine and think this has potential but not with that ui...even the giant ring and all the garbage on screen is not necessary there are ways to do away with all that shit.

Employee: "What if we took even more story outta MGS and got rid of the NPCs' AI, making them all zombies?"

CEO: "Make it on-line only, add micro-transactions and you have yourself a Konami game!"

Also, "humans in MGSV are kinda idiot zombies"?

I guess Jeff, but, which stealth game have you played that has better AI?

(This is a genuine question, no sarcasm intended).

@humanity: Maybe not, and I definitely apppreciate some of the intuitive quirks and gameplay elements he has brought to the table, but MGSV (any Metal Gear, really) is a prime example of his creative direction utterly failing in as many regards as it succeeds.

That's gotta be one of the worst HUDs in any game I've seen, and I've seen Dissidia NT.

This.... looks really fucking bad. I don't think I've disagreed with the sentiment expressed in a quick look quite as much as I do about this. Those robot voices are terrible in an unfun way and as others have said, it looks like a cheap asset flip.

@wobblysnake: I’d argue it definitely succeeds more than it fails but that’s probably a mater of taste. Like I didn’t have a problem with Quiet despite the internets uproar over her design, because she seemed exactly like the type of character you would see in a Metal Gear game. People jokingly call him an auteur but I seriously consider him to be one because his games are so wildly different than anything else on the market, even from a control scheme standpoint, and yet they’re still successful videogames that in many ways are ahead of the curve. People may not vibe with some of his design choices but the man certainly has a vision.

I mean it certainly seems like it has the kind of quirkiness I like in Japanese video games. The one thing I can't get over in this video: yo this combat looks like ass. Sort of surprised that Jeff refrains from roasting this game based on the spear attack animation alone because man it looks bad. For all I know there's a variety to the weapon types and enemies that can't be shown just yet. Just saying my first impression is not a good one.

In a world with wormy holes and the ability to carry thousands of tons of junk I fail to understand why in the living hell you can't carry around a gun and ammo. So stupid.

@humanity: Like you say, it is a matter of taste, but I find the line falls a bit closer to 50/50, which I don't think are particularly good odds. Look at MGSV alone; an engine capable of downright amazing output to consoles, fluid and easy to grasp controls while still being pretty damn comprehensive, outside-the-box puzzles like the Kikongo issue, enough wacky tools and systems in there to get plenty of enjoyment out of even just messing with the AI let alone actually playing it seriously. But then on the other hand you have a barren and pointless open world, a nonsense sidestory stripped down to it's knickers for no discernible reason, terrible online integration, horrendously bad level design for actual stealth and, purely in my opinion, a deep lack of personality and charm, something which the series had had in spades til that point.

Yeah, I'll agree that he's an auteur and definitely one of the more interesting names in the industry (I remember seeing a trailer for Survive and thinking how obvious it was they were trying to copy his very recognizable style), but I find it hard to appreciate everything he's done. To this day I mourn what MGS4 could've been. The most comprehensive control system this side of ARMA, only to be wasted on action setpieces that barely make use of it between literal movie length cutscenes.

Maybe it's because I have so much love for Metal Gear that all the problems it has are that much more gnawing. As of now he is a hack in my eyes, but I would love for him to prove me wrong. This ended up longer than I expected.

The comparisons to Dead Rising look pretty accurate to me, and personally i think that is a bad thing.

Hard pass.

I love MGS5. I was kinda interested in this game, but now...not so much.
