I am not a fan of the twitter feed and why is paradise that awful color grade? I'm installing the ultimate box right now to see if I somehow missed the puke greens of burnout.

Also takedown is a way better racing game, burnout game, and game in general. Despite buying paradise day one it was never the same feeling as the break neck speed you need to learn courses and avoid traffic in takedown which is paramount to the series. Creating open courses and less emphasis on carefully constructed tracks was a huge disservice to fans of the game.

Like I hated burNing laps but few racing game have given me that feeling of driving on a razor thin edge or the speed that burnout did.

They also removed crash mode. Seriously like nothing was better about paradise.

Jeff says his favorite part of paradise is driving around gathering collectibles and smashing things. That doesn't make it a better racing game if you prefer to collect things instead of you know, race.

The fact paradise won the poll tells me not enough people played takedown to know how much of a master piece that game was.

Burnout takedown 2 please

There's something weirdly obnoxious about the voice acting in Frantics. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I found it to be so grating.

See I actually disagree I actually think the city as a whole was so tightly and carefully designed it blew out the original tracks onto a grander scale. That's only more evident going back to it now and realizing how relatively small the world was and how planned out each race was with multiple routes.

I think I just hate the aesthetic of Burnout Paradise. Burnout 3 is so arcady and colorful, whereas Paradise has that xbox 360 era metallic/brown color scheme every game had for like 6 years, and I just can't stand it.

I also agree that the fixed tracks are better than the open world, at least if you're in it purely for the racing, which I was.

It's a double bummer because the original Xbox version of Burnout 3 is the best version, but was never ported/re-released, so its hard to find it these days.

huge shoutout to @rorie for playing Dragons Dogma. I’ve been trying to put people on that game for ages and absolutely loved it myself when it came out - even write a huge blog urging people to try because I was that smitten with it. Incredibly unique with some really fascinating gameplay mechanics. Owning a soulless slave bound to you through a magical void realm has never felt this good.

Also shoutout for putting my Jason art up on the monitor in the back.

@bladeofcreation: it’s really not, it’s actually very hands off! You create your own pawn and assign it a class (which you can change later many times) and then go into the rift and simply “rent” other pawns to form a party.

The cool thing is that pawns that have completed quests with their “masters” will share their knowledge when you’re doing the same quest. In dungeons they’ll point out which way to go or for enemies you haven’t fought they’ll point out weaknesses.

Similarly if another player rents out your pawn and does a quest with them that you haven’t done yet, your pawn will likewise retain that knowledge and help you out.

It’s a really fascinating system and the endgame is absolutely bananas compared to 90% of the main campaign which is this weird high fantasy as interpreted by a Japanese developer.

The inclusion of unlimited Ferrystones in Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen took a bit out of the adventure of the game I think. There was something magical about setting out with your team from Gran Soren, fighting, exploring, discovering phat staxx of loot and wondering about whether or not you'd be able to make it back at all since night was coming, undead were popping out of the ground and packs of wolves hunted you down.

Pawn system was also a great way to keep enveloped in the game world, rather than playing with random xXxTheRealDarkNatrutoSnipa420xXx that instantly knows where to go and what to do. Pawns hinting at stuff through their in-world dialogue was so much better, but it felt really special once I got to the end and understood the meaning of the pawn.

Although Im pretty sure the time during which Jeff first played paradise has a lot to do with his opinion on it. Cant blame him for loving a game that (partialy) got him through a rough spot in life :)

Props to Rorie for playing my legit number 1 favorite game of all time! It has some flaws, but Dragon's Dogma is legit my all time favorite in my imaginary top whatever list. I think I bought it on every platform I owned, ps3, pc, ps4. It's just so awesome to me. You're the best Rorie!

I'm in the Burnout-was-ruined-with-Paradise camp. It's because it paved the way for open-world driving games where you just have one map. bo--ring! In the old days you had maps like Tokyo, Egypt, Scotland, The Moon, Underwater, Italy, London... Modern arcade driving games are just "Bland City USA" or have boring realistic tracks.

Even The Crew doesn't really feel as diverse and stylized as Outrun.

@scotto: I have real concerns about how much content is in that game and how long it's going to stay interesting, so I made a point after we streamed it not to play it again till the final version. It's very possible to stream too much of a good thing.

@brad: That's a fair point. The last beta adds several (but not all) new factions. This includes the trade merchant (animal fetch quests) and the one for doing skeleton fort raids. Still not loads more to do, but they also added some nice new map features that make it easier to separate sections of the archipelago.

I wonder if Jason ate most or all of those Red Vines himself.

e: The static ending points for the races in Burnout Paradise was one of the main turn-offs for me. If they made the courses a little more dynamic it probably would have helped. The Forza Horizon games are the Burnout Paradise open world style done right IMO.

Wow I went looking for my old copy of burnout 3 takedown for ps2 and while looking I found a brand new in box sealed racing Wheel I forgot I got for Christmas last year. I was building a new pc at the time and forgot it was there. It's a Logitech g29 and I guess the burnout talk is a bit divisive but my two favorite racing games on pc are forza horizon 3 and dirt rally anyone have suggestions on good racing wheel games besides those two? Ive never used a racing wheel so what a fun thing to just find! Maybe I'll drive around paradise and see if it's any better than when it came out.

I know they fixed it but driving back to the start of the race burned me out on that game. Sometimes when I lay in bed I see headlights appearing at 250 Mph as I swerve and near miss cars like some people count sheep.

My favorite racing games of all time are burnout 3 takedown, need for speed most wanred, need for speed hot pursuit, forza horizon 3,need for speed underground (not sure which one but for ps2 with tons of customization and cops roo), and the near perfect dirt rally and redout but I don't think you can use a wheel with it.

The only game that feels as fast as takedown to me is redout, a game where you break the sound barrier and fly off of the track. Redout is so God Damm good.

Sorry if my question got lost but anyone have recommendations for good driving wheel games on Pc? I would say ps4 but it's been sitting in a drawer since I really can't stand using controllers due to joint issues.

Is there a better racing game franchise than burnout? Does criterion not know theyes made the best racing games of all time..even if we got a paradise 2 any burnout in 2018 would be pretty amazing either way.

@steveurkel: Forza 7 is on PC, although I've only played it with a controller. I bought a new wheel last year for PS4 and PC but it's never been out of the box.

Last racing game I used a wheel with on PC was Project Cars.

I dunno about ruined but I just found Paradise kinda boring. It's this big yet pretty barren open world and as cool as that sounds in theory(the open world part), in a driving game you do sort of want a purpose, or at least I do anyway. Driving around and crashing through billboards was fun when it organically came up on the way somewhere else, but I could never just ride around the city and do that intentionally. Similarly GTA games are fun for me but I can only free roam for so long until I actually do want to hit that next story mission to get the bespoke content rush. Paradise is the Ubisoft-map-with-a-hundred-icons treatment of a driving game.
