I love that Dan can still say things after like 4 years of being on GB that makes everyone incredulous haha. Both that it happens at all, and that he is honest and just like yeah I didn't know that.

I think it's bizarre that people are giving shit about Dan not being more informed about spec work considering, if I'm not mistaken, he wrote video game reviews on spec for like, 5 years or something before being payed (well... obviously I'm not privy to how he was paid)? In this case it feels like a difference in attitude and perspective and not ignorance.

Dan is aggressively pro corporation and brands in large part because he doesn't care to know any better. It's a crappy position and he shouldn't be defended over it.

Is the video cut short for anyone else?

@pewpewlazors said:

Anyone not have sound on this video for the second half?

In case it helps:

"HTML5" version cuts at ~14:30 for me, "Progressive" loses sound at around that point.

Using latest version of Firefox on Windows 10, ftr. Appears to be the same on Edge. cbf checking Chrome.

EDIT: also the "Progressive" version is only ~30mins long, whereas the actual (apparently working) Youtube version is just over 2hrs long.

Video is broken. Audio cuts out halfway through the 30 minutes of it that are still accessible on the GB version even though it's supposed to be over an hour long @unastrike

@doncabesa: I know Dan has ridiculous pro-corporation tendencies, and I wouldn't ordain to defend most of them, but I don't really think this is the same thing. He has a certain outlook on achieving success etc, and it's definitely a privileged one, but it also doesn't feel completely ignorant? Not defending him whole cloth.

I never thought I'd say this, but God bless Dan Ryckert, who didn't know that pirates actually stole things.

Yeah, the open world had basically nothing to do with why that game was good. The open world map was basically a few dozen bases/compounds, each like 2500 meters away from each other for no good reason, and the interesting part was infiltrating a compound from whichever direction you want once you were close to it.

The same thing could've been accomplished by having a series of Hitman style smaller-but-still-sandbox maps. Traveling between bases in MGSV:TPP was boring, and only a very small number of story missions used the scale of the map/roadways between bases in an interesting way. The other 98% of the game, the size of that map is an obnoxious time waster.

Yeah, exactly. In this regard, I actually think that MGSV: Ground Zeroes did a better job at this, because it IS that Hitman-sized compound. Big enough to have all of the ins and outs you could want, not big enough that objectives are so far away that it's tedious to get to them. I would've vastly preferred if the missions in TPP took place in GZ-sized compounds.

I hope the character selecting in assassins creed works. The series is strongest when the main character is interesting. Bayak and Aya were amazing. I worry that since these 2 new characters are interchangeable within the story that they may be written very flat.

What's worse: Dan not understanding what Pirates are, or Dan not understanding why free spec work is shitty for creators?

The first, since I just have to wonder what was going through his head all these years when people talked about movie/music/video game "piracy." Vinny's "I can't engage with this" type of reaction best encapsulates the unsettling disbelief a lot of people would feel at that moment. Even if it's laughed off, moments like that are cringeworthy because co-workers at least have the passing thought of "this person is literally my peer. What does that say about me?"

Oh indeed, you also see this exact line of thinking on Brad and Alex' faces, it seems to go beyond an "oh Dan's just goofing again" impression, into outright cringey disbelief.

@effache: Didn't he get his start in the industry writing reviews for free? I'm not too interested in defending him (I really do think he's ignorant by choice of how shitty life can turn out for some people and I can't get behind that), but a guy who got his dream job by starting with doing unpaid creative labour not getting objections to people doing the same is at least understandable.

Man, the part with Miyamoto on stage for Starfox and the big Donkey Kong orchestra really made me miss when Nintendo did actual conferences.

I'd like to think that at this point the guys on staff would be willing to conceded being wrong this whole time about the likelihood of Beyond Good And Evil 2 ever seeing the light of day, but I should know by now. Always happy to tell you they knew something about a thing before you did, rarely ever willing to concede on a bad guess about the same. Ah well, tis' the way of the internet.

As soon as that creative crowdsourcing for Beyond Good & Evil 2 was touched on, I knew that would become a huge minefield if not handled well.

Dan's a guy who doesn't know what a pirate is but will buy a toys to life game and play it once just 'cause Star Fox is in it.

I should probably give For Honor a try.

Seriously, them saying "That's why pirates are badguys" is ABOUT as ignorant as "Wait, pirates steal shit?" just on a different level.

Dan's comments about pirates being funded by countries is actually pretty close to the mark. Most "pirates" were really privateers and were given license by a country to raid the shipping of hostile nations. In return they would turn a blind eye to some illegal actions. It was officially sanctioned crime.

Disappointing to see Ubisoft going back to the yearly schedule for Assassin's Creed, especially with Odyssey looking so similar to Origins.

Wow...this single video has created a mind-blowing new perspective of Dan. Sure, he's been ignorant in the past, but wow something about Ubisoft brought it out in him.

The pirate thing is dumb, but to be honest most of the pirate media of the past while really hasn't shown them robbing people per-say so that might be why he didn't think that.

But he seriously didn't understand the difference between art/assets being put into BG&E2 and people just making drawings on the Mii Verse for Splatoon???

New depths have been reached here.

I have zero tolerance for Dan's ignorance. It's one of the many the reasons why I don't watch GiantBomb anymore. I envy the people that find it endearing because I just can't help but wonder how the hell this man is allowed out in the world.

Watching the Skull & Bones trailer, there was confusion about why the pirate ships would ever fly pirate sails or a pirate flag. Why not just fly the legit flag from the origin country? I'm pretty sure the reason for the black pirate flag was for intimidation, so that pirates could get their target to potentially surrender and hand over the goods without even needing to fight. I think there was a reasonable chance that the boarded crew would make it out alive, if they didn't resist.

I think them playing "I'm Still Standing" as the song that leads into and out of the conference is more than just a "hey this is in Just Dance"... It feels like it was a statement now that Vivendi isn't a threat anymore.

Greetings Duders,

After the dark events of Giant Bomb's E3 Ubisoft Conference, I prepared episode 1 of D.E.R.P. (Dan Ryckert Education Remediation Program) so that Dan and other unfortunate souls will know exactly what it takes to be a pirate.

I won't pretend this is of high quality, but the idea and video makes me laugh so I thought I'd share it in case others also have a lame sense of humor like me.

Happy Fourth of July!
