Star Wars Battlefront - Great tech demo but a terrible game
I love Star Wars with a burning passion. Everything about the original trilogy is perfect, George Lucas had created some of the most memorable characters and set pieces in the history of cinema, and John Williams is equally to blame for the quality of the series because he is responsible for creating the most symphonic and uplifting score in any movie ever. So when you create a piece of Star Wars media you have every advantage in the world to create something incredible, and from a technical standpoint, DICE has knocked it out of the park. The graphics and sound design are incredible, they've perfectly captured the look and feel of Star Wars but my issue lies within the gameplay. EA screwed the pooch hard with this one by rushing it out the door in an unfinished state. And I'm not talking about server or optimization issues I'm talking about the content, or more specifically how much of it there is. There's no single-player campaign at all or anything that even resembles a campaign for that matter. There are only four maps in Battlefront because the rest are locked behind a stupid $50 season pass, and out of nine game modes, only a couple of them are interesting enough to warrant putting any extended amount time into. And on top of that people were worried this game would just be a shameless Battlefield re-skin but honestly, if that were the case the game would've turned out much better because it lacks the overall depth of those games. The closest thing to a fresh idea is the heroes, the chance to play as some of your favorite Star Wars characters is every child's dream come true and it's as flashy as flashy gets but that's if you actually get the chance to use one of them in the first place. They're insanely difficult to acquire and by the time you start your rampage as Darth Vader or Boba Fett, it's ended shortly after because it took you so long to get to that point in the first place. I got bored with the game after playing for a total of four hours, it's more like a glorified demo for a full game than anything else and that's really frustrating. The game does a perfect job of capturing all the aesthetics of Star Wars but offers nothing in terms of variety, depth, or longevity. Star Wars Battlefront is the most disappointing type of game because you can ponder about what it could've been all you want but at the end of the day, you know it'll never be that game you've dreamt up.
