Hello, Giantbomb community!

I was wondering if my low-end PC can run SC2 even on low settings, so I don't have to download it all for nothing.

Specs:

Windows XP SP3

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processor 3200+ ~2,0GHZ

2 GB RAM DDR2

Nvidia Geforce 6100 with 256 VRAM

Anything else you need, tell me ;D

I think probably not. Your processor is below minimum spec, so it's possible that even if you can get it to run, it'll run really slow even on the lowest settings.

All your other hardware seems to fall within the minimum specs, so that probably won't cause any problems, but I'd recommend you don't buy the game until you've upgraded your (ancient) pc just to be safe.

Playable? Fuck no. Even on low settings you need a better CPU once you have a decent amount of units on screen. I doubt you'd be able to play with an enjoyable framerate at all. You better don't ruin the experience for yourself and wait until you got a decent rig.

If you had a better GPU you'd probably be able to get away with it. But that GPU is just so ancient.

Why not try the free standard edition before purchasing the game?

This way you can find out for yourself.

My guess is that you can run it on lowest settings and it will be bearable.

Precisely. There's a free version of the full game with restricted maps, so if you have the patience to wait for the download, try it out. It's not some stripped out demo; it's just a locked version of the full game.

@tunaburn:Ah well, I tried it, and only the video card failed on minimum.

Can you fit a PCI-e card into your computer? It might be worth investing in one. If you shop around you can find some for less than the price of the actual game.

Also look for deals on cards such as the 8800gt/5770/4850 etc. on forums and on ebay. These cards were at one time really popular budget buys and now they people should be offloading them.

Or save up and buy a 6850 for $140ish, I saw a deal on amazon.

6600gt and 9800 is very low end cards, so if you go up to the current gen cards you should be able to make SC2 run for cheap.
