How confident are you in your skills, and how long did it take you to reach that skill level?
I want this game, but I first want to hear what it takes to actually become good at it. I've heard the learning curve is pretty brutal...
Street Fighter IV
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Jul 18, 2008
After nearly a decade in hiatus, Capcom's signature mainline fighting game series resurfaces with its fourth main installment, combining the traditional 2D gameplay with modern fully-3D graphics.
How good are you at SF4?
During the day today I got about 70 wins, most of them against players with less than 300 BP. Tonight though, all the dudes are home from work and I'm getting my ass handed to me. I also got 5 messages telling me to "Learn to play the fucking game" or something like that, after kicking their ass. I respond with:
"It's time for you to learn the first rule of Street Fighter: If it's in the game, it ain't cheap. (Psst... back button on the d-pad will block fireballs.)"
I guess I'll use the 1-10 scale as well.
I'm probably around a 6.5 right now after playing for a solid couple of weeks. I'm not exactly a fighting game novice, but this game has some nuance and uniqueness that make it easy to pick up and play, but difficult to be competitive at.
To me, it's all about pounding the pavement online and finding a fighter who really suits your play style. Get your basic skills down and find your suited fighter and you're bound to be at least slightly competitive.
Well just think of it like this; the very nature of the game is competitive so there is always going to be someone better than you or at least somebody trying to prove they are better than you.
How confident am i in my skills, very. length of time i played though was since the arcade scene was hot. but, as confident as I am in my skills, I am more confident that somebody has more skills than me.
I am a fairly decent Sagat player, and an alright Cammy player I guess (just unlocked her yesturday).
From a scale of 1-10, I'd say 7.5 for Sagat and 6.5 for Cammy.
Strange thing with me is even though I've played every street fighter know to man. I always have to play the game for awhile and learn the ends and outs of the game and get better and better I rarely ever start out awesome at a street fighter game which is weird considering there my favorite games. So right now i would consider myself a decent player but with time I hope to become excellent at it. Which is what happened when I first started playing Capcom Vs Snk 2 and street fighter 3 online. I completely sucked but ended up becoming very good at them.
I'm 288 game played, 137 won which is abut 47%. I can beat a lot of people with 1000-2000 BPs but I'm usually slaughtered by those with over 2000. I just don't have enough experience with fighting at their level.
My BP is ~1200, but I stopped playing ranked matches when I got my 10 ranked wins in a row, I played 28 matches of ranked total.
My win percentage is about 75% across all modes.
I played 5 rounds against someone who was ranked in the top 50 players worldwide and got him down to about 50% health each time before he beat me.
Most people I play against seem worse than me, some feel equal, that top 50 guy is the only one I played against that seemed clearly better than me.
Oh, and I played SF2 in arcades, but never got good at SF games until the last few years.
If BP is anything to go by I'm 1474 BP with a 52%-ish win rating. This rating is messed up since I was kind of dicking around when I first started, but I've won most of my fights since I stopped playing random characters.
I don't know how good I am and I think it's kind of pretentious to rate/categorize myself.
How good? That's hard to say. I used to play a lot of Street Fighter II: literally hundred of hours. The only game I ever played competitively, at a time when there was no real online gaming. I hadn't touched the game in a decade when I got my hands on Street Fighter IV a couple of weeks ago and I find myself really rusty. I can pull most moves without too much problems, but I really lost my timing with the combos. And I hate the X360 controllers, I feel like I won't be able to really get back into it until I can get my hands on a decent pad or stick... something very hard to find in Canada apparently. Meh.
Alright...I hope everyone in this thread sends me a friend request on Xbox Live because there are a lot of 7+'s here. Not that I think I'm that good of a player, but I've been running into mostly scrubs online and it's getting a little boring beating up target dummies.

I've been playing since Tuesday, and I still suck pretty bad. I haven't played a ranked game, only player matches, but I still have only won maybe 5 or 6 matches this whole time. I think I'm getting pretty good with Bison, I seem to lose just barely every time, or the other person will rely on using their ultras to take me down. I bet in 2 weeks I'll be able to actually win a match or two regularly. After a few lost matches, the host usually kicks me out of the lobby by then, I guess because they want a challenge.
4/10 with Bison.
IM THE BEST THERE IS AND THE BEST THERE EVER WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
j/k, from scale 1-10, i have to say 0, because i don't even have the game.
"Me? An 8 or a 9? No way dude, I'd say I'm a 6 or 7 at best. I do have a 74.5% win rate after 800+ online matches, but I seem to either go against total scrubs or guys that kick my ass hard."Wasn't a majority of those wins from your Dan stomping all over my entire roster? :)
MB is skilled and does have a mean Gouken, so watch out.
let see, A mediocre 5. How do i know that, I can do the Normal Challenge but it get a really hard time with the, ehhh, Hard Challenge and I have a Arcade Stick.

I tend to win 15 or 20 matches in a row and then get my ass handed to me."Damn, 74.5%? 15-20 matches in a row? Got any general fighting tips?

At least a 7 for range of motion on the pelvic thrust...

I'd tear you up!
I kid =)
I USED to be a mid-level fighter, but nowadays I'm stinking it up online something fierce.
I think I got complacent using Vega, and then attempting to play as Dhalsim has really fucked up my instincts. Lost nearly half my BP's trying to get back into the groove.
Tomorrow... it's back to basics. Using Shoto characters and trying to pursue playing Abel again.
I'd say about 6.0-7.5 range. I'm confident going into any match and always play to win, but the thing is that there are about 180 countries in the world and a lot of people across them play street fighter so It's hard to boast. I've has all sorts of matches : I've pwned, I've had close calls , Ones with cheap tricks, Epic showdowns and I've also been humiliated a LOT of times.....
"When Hulk has been playing a bit and is warmed up and in rhythm, pretty damn good. When rusty and not on point, pretty damn average."Man I know what you mean, once in a while there's a day where my fingers just won't move and I suck and lose to people I know I shouldn't be losing to. Other days when I've warmed up a bit I get into such a rhythm and I'm MUCH better.
On scale of 1-10? Probably 7.5ish. -_- most of the time when I play player matches I get get about 10 Kens, 5 Ryus/Akumas and occasionally one random character, I can beat them pretty easy. I got scared off of Ranked Matches at launch because I got owned easy. I swear now all the good players have much higher BP then me and I never get to fight them...and again get stuck with beating up Kens until I get to someone really good who stomps me and scares me away again. Much practice to be done.
