This Blog Post Is A Diversion From Your Main Readings
Currently, I am working on Tales of Vesperia and am nearing the end of the game. As such, I decided to finish up many of the side missions that I had been working on over the course of the game. One of these missions involved Judith and her missing spear. Throughout the game, I had triggered many events that furthered the side mission of finding Judith's spear; and at the final town visited I triggered yet another even involving Judith with the president of Fortune's Market. According to guides, I needed to travel to some town ruins that I had visited earlier in the game. There, I would meet up with bandits who had Judith's spear and would they would get chased down - side mission over! Except, the bandits never appear.
After consulting the guide again, it would seem that I missed (easily) a certain event near the beginning of the game. Not triggering this event, the bandits never appear at the ruins and I can't get Judith's spear to finish this side mission. So my question to the developers is this: why lead me on through scripted events if I can't finish the side mission?
My game time now sits at over 140 hours, and I have yet to beat Tales of Vesperia. This amount of time is mainly due to me exploring each area and talking with people multiple times (and also a good amount of grinding). Yet, I still miss many side missions that should be available. It feels like now I need to speak to a certain person, at the right time of day, wearing certain armor, at a specific spot, using the right character, just to trigger an event. Oops! Forgot to say 'Hi!' to his sister back three towns ago and before I had defeated a boss. Too late now!
Tales of Vesperia does redeem itself however in it's grade system in battles. Each battle fought is graded based on certain criteria, and at the beginning of a new game (after beating the game), you are able to use the accumulated grade points as a currency in exchange for carrying over various aspects from your previous game. Hopefully I'll have the time to actually play the game a second time; as it stands now, I already have quite a back log of games, and would still like to do second play-throughs of Fable II and Lost Odyssey.
Speaking of which, Lost Odyssey also robbed me of an achievement for maximizing skill levels for all the immortal characters due to me missing two spells at a shop. By the time I realized that I had missed the spells, the shop had changed it's inventory! GAH!
tl;dr
Don't show events to side missions that players aren't able to complete (due to missing something earlier)!
If an item is easily purchasable at the beginning of the game, it should be just as easy to purchase at the end of the game!

My post basically boils down to the game leading me on in a side mission, playing cut scenes and such, only for me to find out at the end of the game that I can't complete this side mission because I forgot something that was near the beginning of the game. If I don't trigger the initial event, then don't show me other aspects of the side mission like I would be able to complete it.
Oh, and Tales of Vesperia is the only game I've played in the Tales series and is a fantastic game at that.
Yeah I can understand your frustration there. Tales games pretty much expect you to do a second playthrough if you want to do everything. My experience with them has been to play through 'normally' the first time for the plot and then follow a guide for the second time, usually with 2x experience or changing the difficulty.
You're right though, usually if you miss the first step it doesn't show the rest and Judith's spear quest seems like an annoying exception. 140 hours? Damn, I've just gone over 135 waiting for 'To Points Unknown' to unlock and I thought I was being methodical!
If you have access to a PS2 I'd definitely recommend trying out Abyss, as it's the most similar to Vesperia of the other Tales games currently out there. The only downside is that the performance isn't great (battle loading times) and it might feel a bit clunky compared to how smooth Vesperia is, but it's probably my favourite of the series.
Argh! So I'm now about to beat the game a second time on EX mode and in reading the achievements it would appear that I missed out on getting all the secret missions by one frikken mission (and that was on my first play through; I missed the secret mission on the second boss). The game if fun to be sure, but damn frustrating for the completionist in me.
I was planning to get Vesperia and Batman this Friday, but both my 360's are dead, one died today while I was out :( The other which is an Elite, died on the 24th of last month, and is in the 360 clinic getting repaired...
If you have a Wii or GC, consider hunting down the Gamecube game, which is awesome, or the Wii game which is so so. The latest Wii game however looks amazing... Tales of Graces
Vesperia on the PS3 will be available to play in Japan very soon as a demo, it's part of the "Sony Experience" taking place in Tokyo on the 11th.
F-yeah! After 216 hours (3 full play throughs) I am a Vesperia master :D What an excellent game; I will have to look at other games in the Tales series (as suggested above) for later. Little JRPG'd out right now, so time to look for another game on my list of games only partially completed.
Happy New Year Duder - Hope this one turns out to be a good one for yourself and those you love
(cannot post on yer wall)
On another note, Tales of Graces on Wii appears to be yet another excellent Tales game, it may well prove to be better than this given it's surprising array of features and innovation.
