So the Witcher 2 is due to come out pretty soon, and so I thought I should go and finish the first one.
The Witcher
Game » consists of 8 releases. Released Oct 26, 2007
The Witcher is an Action Role Playing Game developed by CD Projekt RED and is based on the book "The Last Wish" by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. An Enhanced Edition was released in September, 2008. A director's cut version was released for North America on July 31, 2009.
How long did it take you to finish?
Seems like it's all down to your playstyle. You can power through things super efficiently like Rorie plays WoW, or you can dawdle and go all over the place and try to explore every nook and cranny like Vinny plays Dragon Age.
I always lose interest as I'm gaining access to the first city after the prologue. I don't know why I can't get into it and stick with it. For the record, I tend to play these games more like Vinny. I probably burn myself out before the game gets good enough to hook me.

"that place sucks, really; don't be hesitant to just follow a FAQ. it really picks up once you get to Visima.
I think I got like 25 hours?
I tried really hard to finish it, I started it twice, and both times I tried to complete every side quest. The farthest I got was when you get dumped on a shore somewhere after going through the city chapter, but it was just boring to me. I really should love this game, but it didn't grab me I guess. Hopefully the sequel will succeed where the original failed for me.
Ended up powering through it though, and gotta say, you stopping at the lake was a good spot, since the end of the game was not great, pretty meh actually.
i finished it in 35 hours according to Steam, i did as many side quests as i found (i did fail some of the contracts because iw as lacking the books and couldnt be bothered to find them, or i finished a chapter and the quests were gone), and got the Raven Armor... was also ridiculously overlvled and the last few bosses were spammed to death with the fire spell, so yeah, i did a lot of quests. As usual, i dont know where people get these insane hour amounts in rpgs :/
Right. Gonna grab this on Steam, and proceed to plow through it. Hopefully pick up the sequel in a week or two.
It took me about three or four days to complete The Witcher. So im guess you dont sleep much.
I thnk my playthrough was about 70 hours. Generally I tend to take longer with games than most other people and I try to complete every quest/side story before moving on so thats probably why.
I stopped playing for about a month after starting chapter 2 and only went back to it after building a new PC and wanting to see how it would run.
I just purchased this game on GOG (only five bucks!), watching the Witcher 2 quick look got me interested in this series. I'll probably power through it as fast as possible. Seems kind of clunky at the beginning.
It really is, and the first chapter is one of the most unusual RPG experiences I've ever had! Quite a slog tbh...but then again, Old Vizima really is meant to be a shithole, and it felt great to be rid of that place.I just purchased this game on GOG (only five bucks!), watching the Witcher 2 quick look got me interested in this series. I'm mid-way through chapter 2 myself, and the gaming is really beginning to open up. Important story decisions incoming. Some of the side-quests are pretty epic, too.
For $5, this game was a steal. Best gaming purchase in a looong time.

Necro post I know, but wow, you just completely summarised my own experience with this game. I finished it about an hour ago and through most of the final two chapters and the epilogue I was finding combat really rather easy. It makes contextual sense, considering Geralt is a super badass guy, but none of the late game monsters really caused me any trouble at all. The only times I died were because I got careless - instantly reloaded and kicked ass because I was being careful. By the time I reached the final boss I had accumulated dozens of potions, blade coatings and bombs which I never used because I never needed to, because as you said it was easy to just spam the fire spell and occasionally cast barrier spell when shit got real.
As for my hour count, it's also incredibly similar to Rhaknar's. Steam clocked me in at 38 hours, doing every sidequest I found except a handful. I really feel like I saw everything the game had to give me, so when people say they spent 75 hours in the game, more than double my playtime, I just wonder what the hell are people doing for all this extra time?
Also worth mentioning that I think this game is fucking awesome and I am super excited to jump into The Witcher 2 shortly. I need to beat the sequel before November, when Skyrim will consume my life. Goddamn I love RPGs...
I think I completed it in about 40 hours or so. I have no reliable way of knowing for sure since I played the retail version.

I played The Witcher like that, and I don't know how much time it took me to beat it because the game doesn't have a time indicator.. But it took me a long fucking time, nothing short of 40 hours
