Abilitease is an aspect of game design wherein a game will provide a glimpse of your full skill-set at or near the start, only to remove most of these skills, stats, and abilities soon after.
Bosses are enemies that fight you at the end of a level or at a significant point in the story.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Special codes or button combinations used to gain powers or advantages in a game. Generally hidden.
The dreaded Chimera was a terrifying beast that consisted of several animals combined into one. The distinct animal features were that of a lion, a goat and a serpent, though other variations exist.
Dead Cell was a former special U.S. Navy Seal's counter-terrorist training unit founded by President George Sears. They are the main antagonists in Metal Gear Solid 2.
A Directed Escape is an interactive gameplay sequence where the player is unable to successfully fight back or otherwise survive, and is forced to flee to the next checkpoint to resume normal play.
A situation in a game where a character will be defeated no matter what action the player takes. The character may be defeated in a cutscene or the player may be forced to fight until they are defeated.
A terrorist organization made up of bizarre, humanoid beings who primarily use self-destruction as a weapon. The main enemy in "Killer7."
An opponent that typically appears around the halfway point in a level. Mini-Bosses are more formidable than the average opponent, though normally not as tough as the end-level Boss.
A feature (or features) is advertised on the box or in the game manual, but due to the game being rushed or not tested the feature is not there. Fixed with patches or DLC in newer games.
Never Ending Games is a self-explanatory concept in which a game is unbeatable and never ends, due either to the game having no true ending or because the game is not saved (or truly continued) after the last section of the game.
A boss that players fight multiple times throughout the game. They usually follow the player as they progress.
Popularized by franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, these games typically involve a strong implication of danger, vulnerable protagonists, and disturbing monsters.
The part in a story-based game where you become nigh indestructible and really powerful for as long as the game decides. Example: The Upgraded Gravity Gun section in Half-Life 2.
You don't know how to play our game, so we'll teach you how.
An unbeatable enemy is just that, an enemy you can't beat or destroy. It's best to just run away from them.
An Unwinnable State occurs either due to a glitch or by designer choice, when the player's actions make it so that the game can no longer be completed. However, the game continues as though it is still possible to finish and win.
