Overview
Some games with difficulty levels may keep the full list of difficulty selections locked until certain criteria are met. The most common practice of this concept is in keeping higher difficulties locked until the player has completed the game at least once. In doing so, the player is ensured to have at least enough experience with the lower difficulty setting or settings to understand the game well enough to attempt a more difficult challenge without being overwhelmed. On the other hand, if the player is having difficulty with a particular section of a game and dying repeatedly, the game may offer the opportunity to try a previously inaccessible easier difficulty setting.
