The former head of the UN, Kofi Annan, once said that war is always a catastrophe, and even though that was the general view of World War 2 stealth title Velvet Assassin, the game itself has much more in common with this view of conflict than nearly all other games set between 1939 and 1945.Developed by German outfit Replay Studios, Velvet Assassin is the rarest of things; an anti-war game. Much has been made of the graphic violence seen in many of today’s games, not to mention violence ag...

    Beautifully Stylized Game 1

I must admit that I am a sucker for stealth games.  I have loved the Hitman series since the first one (and managed to 1000 the 360 game, which took several patient hours), and in this way Velvet Assassin should be right up my alley.  Initially the visuals are striking and beautiful, as it gives a real post-apocalyptic morphine-induced veneer to WWII Paris.  The nagging thing is the gameplay elements prevent this from becoming more than a passing trial.  It is a mindless stealth game in which yo...

A Fun, If Flawed, WWII Journey 0

Velvet Assassin is the story of British Intelligence agent Violette Summer, a character "based" on real life Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent Violette Szabo. I use the term based lightly because, in reality, there is very little in common between the two people. The game tosses all those silly things we like to call "real events" and just runs with its own story. I can't say I blame Tania Szabo for being displeased with her mother's portrayal in Velvet Assassin.   The game picks up with ...

Fun stealth action that's held back by uneven difficulty. 0

It’s hard to get stealth games right. With games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell doing it so differently, it’s hard to say which game does it the best. Velvet Assassin doesn’t try to re-invent the stealth genre, but it does go back to the old school ways that make it rather challenging, intense, and satisfying. Velvet Assassin follows the story of Violette Summers who is based off of the real-life assassin – Violette Szabo. At the beginning of the game you’ll learn that Violette is uncon...

Hitman without the hit. Or the man. 0

Most every game, like it or not, falls into one of several well established genres. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with this either. Sometimes I want a shooter, sometimes I want to race, sometimes I want to grind for meaningless stats while listening to spiky haired protagonists say ‘…’ With few exceptions, games are at their best when they stick to one idea and run with it. No game can be everything to everyone, much less pull off a second genre well enough to not be embarrassing. For e...

It went quietly... that's good. 0

Simplisity has never really been a problem for me in gaming. A game is too easy to beat? fine, beat it forget it, but this is the first time in a game where simplicity actually frustrates me.     You will be sneaking up on some of the most dumbest people ever. The AI is obviously a AI, it will follow the same set path over and over again very unconvincingly. It doesnt really feel like your sneaking up on a person but more or less just sneaking, waiting, walking slowly, killing the guy.    Th...

    Truly Terrible Game 0

Even the early stealth games weren't as tedious as this affair is. While the main character looks nice and I do like the environments, the AI of the enemies is baffling and the game is just another in a long line of the usual "trial and error" gameplay, which is a sign of very broken design. No game should be IMPOSSIBLE to beat on your first playthrough. It should be difficult to do so, but not impossible and this game is impossible.Taking the role of a British spy who, legitimately, did nothing...
