E3 2018: Everyone in This Room Should Be Afraid of Ellie in The Last of Us Part II

I was dead set against a sequel but now I just need it.

This has to be one of the best looking videogames ever, as far as realistic graphics and animations goes. Ghost of Tsushima might be the only one that can compete, they're both freaking gorgeous. Great trailer as well.

this is my #1 anticipated game. probably my most hype since waiting for mass effect 2.

So, I never played the first game, but I'm thinking maybe I need to? I'm super interested in what I saw and could be interested in this game if the plot also is as compelling as this trailer.

Ellie and her gf look pretty unattractive. I don’t mean that in an insulting way, just actually surprised because female main characters in video games are always very good-looking. That is often a big difference between male and female main characters; unattractive dudes can be in leading roles but women have to be hot. Interesting to see some equality in that space for once.

Is "hanged bodies surrounding a bandit encampment" the new "graffiti written in blood"?

@vashyron: The first game is very good! Particularly the story and the characters. It's one of the best written (if not the best written) triple-A games I've played. Not everyone loves the gameplay mechanics, but I thought they were solid. Compared to Naughty Dog's other big series, your actions actually feel like they have stakes, and you have a few more options in how you want to approach things. The PS4 release is a great way to play it.

It is absurd how good the animations are in this game. Naughty Dog is in a league of their own.

Oh thank god they moved on to face and neck stabbing, that up-close kissing action made me uncomfortable.

Ellie pretty much looks like an older version of herself when she was a child. The girl she is kissing isn't that bad, in fact, she is more realistic looking in terms of how most women look in the real world with no plastic surgery, body enhancements, etc. But yeah, the women's rights movement has grown very strong in the entertainment industry, so except to see more of this. Team Ninja are dialing back the sexy in Dead or Alive 6 because no one wants to deal with the #MeToo or Times Up movement.

@av_gamer: Maybe unattractive was too strong of a word. They’re kinda just average looking. Ellie actually looks waaay more like Ashley Johnson now. It just stands out so much because women in video games are always super pretty or sexy and that is not at all the vibe I get from looking at those 2.

The whole “how nasty do I smell? Let me rub some of my stank on you” also feels like a big departure from how girls are portrayed in games. Being gross is something that wouldn’t be unusual for guys in video games, but not girls.

Looks good, I just wonder where they'll go storywise. Hopefully Joel didn't just die off-screen for example.

Good lord those dynamic animations, I can see the systems at play too. It's like the punch lasers of uncharted are now spread out to ranged and environment interaction now. Amazing tech on display, seems one could have a very different experience 2nd time through with this game. Yeesh have they ramped up the gore and uncomfortable realism though, I imagine this game will have many scenes that are difficult to partake in.

I loved the head shots and seeing people wince finally a more realistic game that has some impact to combat. Soldier of fortune is back

@vashyron: Last of Us was one of those games that got brought up in "Best Of The Generation" discussions - it really is a gem. Plus, it looks like the PS4 remaster is on sale for 50% off right now (at least on the Canadian PSN, your region may be different). Absolutely consider picking it up.

Those dynamic animations have to be heavily scripted for this video, right? Because if that is not the case... when the hell did we reach such an organic and realistic level of animation?

Not a big fan of the saga as I never played the first one, but those animations are real eye catchers (and neck stabbers) if they go through with them.

I don't think they're heavily scripted for the video, it's probably going to be like that on the final game. The first game already had similar organic animations that were really good for it's time, also what Naughty Dog shows on E3 is usually how the final game will look like (with the exception of the announcement trailers), there has even been some times where it looks unbelievable and then their live demos failed, proving that they were showing the actual game (unless they scripted those fails, but I doubt it).

@larmer: Yeah you're making a good point and I agree with you, but the use of "unattractive" comes across badly (as u can see from the dude replying to you initially lol). Especially when they are specifically coding the one girl as being attractive to all the boys. They both look and feel like real people tho you're right. That kiss is maybe the best portrayal of a kiss I've ever seen in a video game? Fair play Naughty Dog, this actually has me interested and the first game didn't pique my interest at all and I never played it.

As someone who loved the first game, I was pretty turned off by the gore in this. I tried to justify it as raising the emotional stakes for Ellie, which it does - witnessing the hanging guy's dismemberment for example, but guy is already hanging. It feels like when you hear someone say "fuck" a few too many times in a sentence and it sorta makes you cringe. Don't know a better way to explain it.

Pretty good E3 for strong (and incredible deadly) female protagonists too, just between Ellie and Lara Croft they look like they could stab the Universe right in the neck.

I don't have a problem with the violence in the game, as with the previous entry I believe Naughty Dog justify their brutality, making it about the desperate feel of the plight of the characters and the sheer dangerousness of the world. I do feel very uneasy about the way that violence is used to sell. The shocking nature of the fights should be an addendum to the game, which will most likely stand on it's story merits very well, not as the sweetener to bring people in to the game.

Unless you're making a gross-out horror film like Human Centipede, you'd never sell a film by showing the best effects gags. This makes games look childish, which is disappointing.

After the party scene did the game just turn into Tomb Raider? Looks amazing visually, though.

@sessh: The guy at the start mentions "your old man" being hard on him. I have a very hard time imagining that refering to anyone but Joel.

the thing that pleases me the most about this trailer - aside from a bit of (albeit intentional) tonal whiplash from violence- is how they've framed it within the context of a subtly quiet character interaction.

that is the SOUL of 'the last of us,' and it shows a confidence in the writing that has me sincerely amped for this. cannot wait.

The first game is my favorite game of all time. I am so damn psyched for this.

@kooldrmoney: hmmm, that's a good question actually. I don't think customization characters count, as you can kinda design and play them however you want. I think Ellie is being presented as a fully realized character, whereas shepherd is mostly just a vehicle for the intentions of the player. But that's open to debate, if others feel differently!

lol first thing that came to mind was True Blood. The whole "everyone's looking at us" scene there was legit though.

I love love loved Left Behind, especially compared to TLoU proper which was just... okay, so the flipping back and forth between better times and bloodier times is great.

This whole thing looks so fuckin great, goddamn. The attack-and-hide gameplay in The Last of Us is so much fucking fun. Kinda bummed me out to see it in Uncharted 4, but I gotta give that game another chance. Really rubbed me wrong my first time through though.

Game looks great. Little too violent for me, though; my nind is still hung up on how they maqrketed the first game as every encounter being a big deal, and then you went on to straight-ice hundreds of people. I feel a little let down by that even still, and I'm not so sure this game is going to make good on that either.

Edit: Alo I'm coming to hate video game stealth. Two people on her tail, shooting at her, and then she just runs into some grass and suddenly they lose her. Or she clambers up a van not very quietly, crunches across some gravel, and still managed to sneak up on a dude. Is everybody's hearing just shot?
