E3 2018: Nero's Got a Score to Settle in Devil May Cry 5

This was probably the most exciting thing for me at that conference. Very excited to have proper DMC back, and Nero rules (especially gameplay-wise), so this is all the better. Robot hand because his demon hand got ripped off! Johnny Yong Bosch! Reuben Langdon for Dante! Exciting all around.

They totally made Nero look the like the dude from Scalebound didn't they?

My E3 is complete. Nothing can top this announcement for me. Spring 2019 is way too far away, though.

His arm let him tap into demon/Sparda power, but it wasn't literally a Bionic Commando style Vergil in the arm thing. Vergil would've been alive for most of Nero's life while he was growing up in the religious cult town.

Vergil died when Nero was a baby. Also Vergil is Nero's father. DMC3 Dante & Vergil and DMC4 Nero are very comparable in age.

I've never played Bionic Commando so I don't get that reference.

I wonder if they are going to make us play through all the stages twice like they did in 4. That was the best...(obvious sarcasm)

That being said...I'm tentatively interested in this. I'd like to see how Nero lost his arm (and presumably Yamato), what role Dante has in this game even if I don't care for the briefest of looks we got of him, and what they are going to do to improve upon it since 4.

I'm a little sad that DmC isn't being moved forward cause that game was fairly decent and had interesting things that could be improved upon.

The DMC reboot was great and its own cool thing -- it will get a sequel, I'm confident of that -- but DMC1, 3, and 4 have always been great, and I will never be disappointed that one of the greatest character-action developers is stepping up to the plate. Also, it just looked fucking good.

I know Vergil is Nero's father but that doesn't mean he's actually inside Nero's arm somehow. He was definitely just tapping into his power, which is why he could only devil trigger when he had the Yamato which had a close tie to Vergil. And it didn't transform him, he appeared behind Nero like a JoJo stand or something. Also to step outside of the canon for a second Dan Southworth the actor for Vergil totally leaked that DMCV was in production years ago with him, Reuben Langdon (Dante) and Johnny Yong Bosch (Vergil) in it, and bringing him back for 4SE was definitely them starting to set people up to be excited for Vergil in 5. The guy on the right of the three character shot on the box is also totally Vergil in the sleeveless costume he had in DMC3, and he (as well as the cloaked figure in this trailer) is wielding Yamato.

As for Bionic Commando, in the 2009 reboot his bionic arm literally had his wife living inside it. Since they're both Capcom games I wasn't sure if you were making a joke or not.

@brunothethird: I doubt that since Ninja Theory is a MS exclusive studio now.

Also there was apparently a leaked image that mentions 3 playable characters; Nero, Dante and "Mysterious V"...now I wonder who that could be :P

@hakunin: It doesn't have to be a Ninja Theory game, does it? They never owned the IP, but I could be way off in my prediction regardless. A lot of the changes in that reboot were present in the DMC5 footage, thinking about it more, so I'll happily cede my DMC2 optimism if it's misplaced.

@TechnoSyndrome: Actually I liked the white-haired Dante look from DmC and I played through it again with that costume on. It was a good visual indication of DmC Dante growing up emotionally to be more in-line with DMC Dante. Unfortunately, a lot of the detractors of that game likely didn't stick around long enough to see that.

Anyway, I'll join the others: pretty bummed this isn't Ninja Theory DmC, but also Ninja Theory being acquired by Microsoft is incredibly exciting.

Edit: Also Nero and that lady are just the snark and the vulgarity of DmC's Dante split between two characters.

Except that anything they make now will probably never come out for Playstation, which sucks.

I admit that I thought that this was a DMC sequel, but at least it won't be Xbox exclusive líka á new Ninja Theory DMC would be.

The only thing about this trailer that doesn't look like a DmC sequel is the 5 in the title.

@brunothethird: I just don't see Capcom going out to find some other studio, to make a sequel to the worst-selling of the DMC games (If you actually count DmC as a "real" DMC game), that's hated by the core series fans, now that Capcom is about banging the drum about the return of "the devil they know".

I'm a core series fanatic who loved the reboot, but yeah, I see your point. Unlikely but not impossible.

@vashyron: That's true, but at the very least it'll be on PC which is widening the audience pretty significantly. Not to everyone, but it's better than a PS4 exclusive title in that regard.

Hell yeah, this is the shit I like! Glad to see Virgil back, and even if I wasn´t really into DMC4´s story, Nero being the main character again and them picking up after it is still something I´m down with. Confirming that it´s not a full reboot by referencing both Kyrie and the Devil Bringer in the reveal trailer was also appreciated.

Every numbered Devil May Cry has had some form of backtracking, or playing through the same levels as different characters, with varying results. But it was one of the things that DmC did away with that I really liked, so unless they´ve got some cool creepy tower to explore I´m hoping that this one takes after that in that regard.

Capcom should just farm the series out to Platinum Games.

I adored the reboot and thought 4 was terrible but the trailer is winning me over anyway. Lightning robot arms > demon arms I guess. Along with FromSoftware's new game I'm calling it: Year of the Mechanical Arm?

Rip DmC2, dreaming about it was fun while it lasted.

Kinda sad it's not DMC2, but if it plays well I'm all in anyway.

So glad we're returning to proper DMC.

@nietzschecookie: A lot of the fans that stuck with the game for gameplays sake and played it over and over really like Nero. He's super fun from a mechanical standpoint. I don't think it's going to make the fanbase erupt or anything that he's back.

That said, some of the hardcore dmc 1/3 fans hated the general direction of 4 and Nero from an art perspective and are probably not too happy.

Dude her teeth are freaking me the fuck out. She is giving off levels of uncanny valley that I haven't felt since the early PS2 years. Apropos, I guess?

Also, fuck Nero. Fuck non-DmC DMC. Back to the old uninspired boring enemies and characters. Virgil is a dumb character too.

Man, this game going realistic Dead Rising 4-style is super fucking jarring. But the more I think about it, the more I think it could be kinda fun? In a goofy way, just seein these realistic-looking idiots fight demons and shit. The music is certainly goofy.

Also, Dante looks like he'd be really interesting in you trying out his moonshine.

People tend to forget with time that when DMC4 was released the general consensus of the fanbase was "oh hey thats a great half of a game" because absolutely no one liked Nero. I remember this because I actually preferred Nero to Dante in DMC4 as I thought the arm was really cool, and always got shit for it if I mentioned it anywhere out in public.

Mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, it's a great trailer and it looks like it'll be a fun game. On the other hand, they bamboozled me with the announcement that MS acquired Ninja Theory, which led me to believe this was DmC 2 for the first 45 seconds.

Ah well... guess I'm just glad Capcom is returning to work on their franchises rather than constantly farming them out until they die (RIP Dead Rising?).
