Great trailer. Better to show the kinds of things that can be done in EVE than try to explain them.

Maybe someone here can help guide me. I'm a pretty irregular player, I don't get to play for long periods of time, and i can't be assured of being available to play at any given time either. I do like space sims and RPGs, though. Is this game for me?

@spunkrake: Subscribe for a month (remaining trial time is automatically put on your subscription), then join KiteCo and get your ass to Catch. Experience & skills gained is accrued over time rather than gained by slaying monsters, so sporadic playing isn't a problem, and even newbros can run tackle or Ewar for a large fleet.

It only costs $15 and by the end of it, you'll know whether you want to keep playing Eve or not.

Love this trailer. It's made for a busy weekend helping lots of new players out. Anyone interested from GB should check out Kite Co Space Trucking. We accept brand new day old duders and the bitterest of bittervets and do our best to get them started on having fun. We're part of Brave Newbies featured (dying gloriously) in this video, who in turn are part of HERO coalition. Come stop by for 100% guaranteed the most Giant Bomb in-jokes, anime buttz, and pathfinder you can find in EVE.

I dunno. I think they just really messed up with the lack of any female voices and then slapping a big THIS IS EVE at the end. Not the best message to send but it really does line up with their demographic I suppose.

I made a promise to myself and my girlfriend that I would never play this game again. I can say without hesitation that this is the best game ever made. I spent 7 years of my life unhealthily obsessed with Eve and I feel the urge to go back about once a week at least.

Great trailer sure, but they didn't show most of the rest of the game. You know the scavenging and mining and skill raising and all that stuff. Plus the UI is so not newb friendly. It's really crappy that a new person would be totally overwhelmed starting the game up the first time. I suppose the tutorials they have now etc make it a bit easier but meh.

Good for them, finally showing off the big fights properly. This is a big step up from the more cinema style trailers they've done. Having said that... this is not EVE. What you see in this trailer is what's happening behind the spreadsheets that will cover your entire screen. Nothing wrong with that, but that's the real EVE, and it's a very oldschool and weird thing, which is not represented in this otherwise great trailer.

You really don't need spreadsheets to play eve... I've played for a while and the only time i used a spreadsheet was when i participated in the alliance tournament...

If you think that it's impossible to get into cool stuff in EVE, KiteCo. was in this video.

When HERO warped into that Rooks and Kings bubble, two of our members were on that fleet. One died giving the other one room to get out.

If you're a newbro, you can start flying with us within about 20 minutes from character creation. We've got basic ships you can blow up, plus there's tons of newbie content from BRAVE right next to us.

There's a lot to learn, but we've all been there. Don't hesitate to ask questions and don't hesitate to explode.

The trailer looks nice, but even as a dedicated MMO player I just could not play this game. Maybe it was the spreadsheet thing or the fact that a large number of people who play EVE are pretty much terrible human beings, but I couldn't get into it. I am sorta surprised I understood most of what was happening from the voice chat from the limited playtime I had. The idea that there was a guy streaming mining, possibly the most boring thing in a video game ever created, is pretty hilarious.

There's some cool promise there, they set up a neat universe fiction that they just never use. Missions are incredibly boring, which I understand is not the way the game is meant to be played. Still, if you are going to call something a "storyline" mission you should give it at least the illusion of a story. I realize it's a game that is basically about screwing other people over, not any kind of real PvE content, but that just doesn't appeal to me. The skill system, as well, is pretty cool in theory though it makes it impossible for a new player to ever outperform an older player. The first people who play the game will ALWAYS be better than you, no matter what.

The best thing of EVE is the economy, its an incredible economic system that other MMOs could probably draw from. A player who can make a little money in EVE can probably run the economy of any other MMO server. The fact that everything is player made and run is really cool.

It IS one of the only sci-fi MMOs out there, your options are pretty much this or Wildstar at the moment. Having played both, I liked Wildstar more but they are incredibly different games.

All that said, as much as it sounds like I despise the game, I am glad EVE exists. There are people that like the sort of thing it offers, and it gives them a home. It keeps people who enjoy griefing a home where they can play with others who enjoy that kind of gameplay without bothering those who don't. I think having EVE around makes for a better atmosphere in MMOs all around.

@inversematrix: See, that's great that you guys are welcoming to new people like that. Last time I tried to get into the game was about 2009 or so I think, it was impossible for me. Honestly, between the UI and the fact the game isn't all action (obviously) turned me off pretty quick.

However, if I did try to get into it again I would totally contact you in game or join your alliance or whatever it is. That would make things way more interesting to me to be a part of those events really. In fact, I think I might get the game another go this week. Maybe lol

This part of your post is 100% false. I am an old bittervet with a LOT of SP. Every skill in the game caps out at level 5. Some of those level 5's take a long, long time to train for nominal gain. If you focus on a specific thing you would be as good or better than me in those ships in relatively short order. I have focused my skills toward small ship combat, specifically anything that isn't a capital and has turrets. If you fly missile ships or capital ships you'll actually be better than me in those ships in just a few months. If instead you want to fly a turret based cruiser, it might take 6 months to catch up to my skill level in a specific ship, and you wont pass me because then we'll both have lvl 5 skills.

EVE is a non-consentual PvP game, and you're correct, some people just wont be able to handle that style of game. For me its something special to PvP with a bunch of friends in Kite, and gives the kind of rush very few other games ever could.

@renahzor: True, I could do something else than you, but if I wanted to follow the same path as you you would always be ahead of me. I had done mostly industry/trade when I played because the economy was the most interesting thing for me by far, and the more established traders have better margins and can pretty much always force you out of any lucrative market. Since skills are based solely on real time subscribed, I would never be able to catch up to them in that area. I wasn't totally ineffectual, I was still profitable, but I would never be able to compete with them because they were better solely for playing longer.

If I focused on say...frigates, maybe I could pilot a frigate better than the traders who have played for years, but not as well as you.

EDIT: I forgot to mention another perk of the game, when the UI isn't in the way the game looks gorgeous. Music is really really well done too.

The spreadsheets in space thing is such a huge misconception. I may be just about the only person in my corp who is neck deep in spreadsheets and that's just because I want to pull information in a meaningful way to tell my corp members where their money is going (still working on that). I also decided to challenge myself to re-learn sql queries in order to make myself better at my job real life job through my space hobby. Spreadsheets are totally not necessary for this game and its a bummer that that is such a pervasive notion.

@lordloc: It honestly took me awhile before I locked into EVE. It wasn't until I hooked up with KiteCo that I really stuck with it. If you do hop into it, hit us up in the chat channel "giantbombing". There's specific instructions at http://www.giantbomb.com/eve-online/3030-14447/forums/giant-bomb-eve-corp-and-community-new-duders-welco-569155/#626/.

EVE is all about the community, it's who you choose to blow up with that makes the game a blast.

That's still wrong. All skills cap at lvl 5. Once you train to level 5 in a skill I have at 5, you are exactly as effective as me in that skill. If you started today and trained directly to my favorite frigate(Republic fleet firetail), you'd be 100% as effective as me in just a few months, including all the necessary fitting skills and gunnery skills to match my own fit.

It's not the literal, market spreadsheets people are talking about. Take a closer look at the HUD next time you play.

When it comes down to base numbers, yeah, you'd be correct. Apply number x to number y and smash until a kill comes out.

EVE is more than that. You're going to be concerned about the direction you fly in, if you can spiral in on a target, where is your fleet, does the enemy have reinforcements, are there drones out that you have to deal with, what happens if you get in and remove his ability to warp away and then get people to help you explode him, ranges on your guns, how much ammo do you have, etc, etc.

I've seen many, many high skill point players not have the brain to match it. They fit the wrong kind of gun on their ships, they fit close range guns with no speed or tank, they put missiles on ships with bonuses for turrets, they jump in and don't try to get back to the gate, thinking "I have all these skills and super powerful modules, there's no way I can lose."

Their corpses litter my hangar.

Don't be afraid because of the numbers. Understanding the game (which will take time) is far more important.

Eve trailers always look good. Unfortunately the real gameplay from moment to moment isnt actually that exciting stuff. Eve´s skill system kinda does mean that newer players are always at an disadvantage when it comes to the variety of skills that they have at their disposal meaning that they have to specialise in a certain thing to be an asset to their guild.

I tried EVE a couple of times but couldnt really get into it. I am hoping that Star Citizen will prove to be the game for me. Though who knows how that game will turn out.

Somewhere in that spreadsheet, there's space combat happening.

Yikes, thats a good reminder of the steps the UI has made in the past few years towards being less horrible. Not one of the finer parts of the game but just like any UI you learn to use it.

The nice thing about the UI is that you can fiddle with it a lot. I have all the big box things (DScan, fleet, local chat, etc) on a second screen and only my overview, drones and fleet/corp chat on my main screen. I get to see all this pretty space and still utilize all the tools.

@2headedninja: They're real comms. I have several alliance-mates whose voices are in it, and evencontributed the comm recordings for it. Plus the Bombers Bar & Rooks and Kings are well-known in-game for the exact tactics shown in the trailer.

@addfwyn: True. Luckily in the case of the market, the galaxy is big enough, and moving stuff around is enough of a hassle, that there's plenty of locations to set up your market stall at. It's not like WoW where you can influence the entire market just by accessing the Auction House from anywhere.
