Talkin' 'Bout BioShock Infinite

As someone who moved to Chicago recently and has gotten into learning about the World's Columbian Exposition (the 1893 World's fair in Chicago), this game looks great. They seem to be hinting that this floating city has come out of that and I'm super excited about the potential for the fiction.

Final Bio Fantasy Shock: Infinity Ward.

This announcement is inline with the first teaser for Batman Arkham City back in 2009. Games getting announced YEAAARS before they're due. It gets annoying and I have a hard time getting too interested in a game this far off. Or maybe my heart's just broken because the trailer is amazing and I want it now!!!! 
 
EDIT: And screw all the Bioshock 2 hate. The first one's story was not THAT great (it also ran out of steam about 3/4 of the way through) and the sequel improved/tweaked the gameplay. Honestly, I prefer it to the original.

Bioshock has actually turned into the 'game play mechanic' rather than some sort of time line or story arc. Hey, they may attach the two stories together as part of one universe, great, so much the better. What I think they're referring to with Bioshock is the powers and genetics they use to create the first person game play elements.
 
Either way the trailer looks damn sexy, the hairs on the back of my neck were reminded of the first time I watched that intro ride into Rapture. Can't wait.

Ryanwho's different dimensions idea makes the 'Infinite' label make more sense, actually. Like, a Rapture in another universe gets dimensional tech, makes contact with other raptures, and there's some big Multiversal war or something. Either that or 'Infinite' means there's been a Rapture in every time period.

If they didn't have the Bioshock name and just showed people this game, people would just say "Oh it's just Bioshock in the sky! Baaaaaw!" So it's understandable that they might as well not beat around the bush and just flat out call it Bioshock. Because there's an isolationist utopia gone awry built in an unconventional locale, you've got your plasmids in one hand and weapon in the other, big hulking guy, I mean people would have been complaining that it was too similar to Bioshock even without the name. It would have been like when people bitched about Fallout 3 being Oblivion with guns.  They might as well call it Bioshock to build recognition and hype for the people who don't know who Ken Levine is.

No idea how the game will play or if I will care about the story line. But the theme of the game seems very fresh, and that's good enough to get me interested.

I'll obviously have to wait and see, of course, but I'm kinda "scared" that they'll just be whoring the name BioShock for sales and that this actually has nothing to do with it. But lets hope not...!

Honestly, I feel sorry for Kessler. Clearly a guy trying to fit into a clique that's been together for years. He is very much the intern. I think he's done a great job considering his relative inexperience, especially in the Quick Looks.
 
Anyway, my reaction: not that interested, based off the teaser trailer. But I think more to the point is that the game is coming out 2012, so anything we see or hear about now could very plausibly change by the time it releases. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if the subtitle was changed at some point, because it is garbage.

It's so obviously the same universe.  You think that mechanical golem is just coincidentally similar to the Big Daddies?  Or the way that girl used telekinesis, or the rampant propaganda...

Anyway: Infinity in a title sometimes means "alternate universe". Star Wars Infinities are all the alternate outcome storylines, and so on. So maybe there is no direct story connection to the first and second Bioshock, it's all alternate universe hooha.  
 
I do hope there's a young Andrew Ryan. Plus a mini-golf course.

Kessler needs to learn that the guy behind the camera only speaks when spoken too. He did save himself a bit with the FEAR 3 reference slightly.

The previews make it sound like a lot of gameplay stuff like plasmids and gun-wielding are carrying over. So I understand why they're calling it BioShock Somethingsomething, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed that "Dude, it's totally more Bioshock."

Because i'm sure "eccentric madman billionare builds own utopia" is the basic theme...How is it not a Bioshock game from what little we know of it? What of the title "bio" and "shocking" implies it has to be underwater? How is it counter productive to build off of a successful IP? "

Eh.  I was hoping that they were going to discuss more of the specifics regarding Infinite other than just the name and place but it seems they haven't seen much more than the trailer at this point.  I got most of my information from here and I must say it sounds really interesting once it gets fleshed out like that.  There'll be more news hitting soon about this.
