Want to Know How Assassin's Creed III's Naval Combat Works? This Video Should Help

Sadly, this video never explains the one thing I want to know about naval combat. Specifically, why British sailors pronounce lieutenant as "leftenant."

I don't care how fun the boat section is, when I think about what I want from Assassin's Creed, and what I want to see from this game, the naval stuff isn't it. Oh well, I guess it is at least something from the game. I don't want to sound pessimistic about, as I already have, because maybe it is a great addition, and something I should be excited about. I hope this is just one of those great moments that happens early on in the game, and then new stuff happens. I don't want this to be a tower defense type thing again where it doesn't really help the story along, it's just a thing. It doesn't look like it though, it really does look like it's just part of the main game since you can see he's sporting the different costume, which means this probably takes place early on in the game before Connor becomes a real assassin.

This is right up my alley. They could make a spin off series about historical naval warfare and I'd be all over that.

It's pronounced and spelled as Leughtenant. I still find it humorous having Americans criticism the English for their own language. Did you know that color is spelled coloUr. British people made the language, I think we have a right to spell words in their proper sound instead of simplifying everything.

@deskp: Which means it's like the tower defense, that's too bad. It should have just been an individual memorable moment in the game, and not as you said, something optional that you can do throughout the game. Oh well though.

All this naval stuff just makes me wish someone would put out a legit pirate game. Maybe this is just them testing the waters on that stuff (pun unintended)?

@NTM: Well the forced mission might be memorable, then the rest optional ;)

If it was just one event in the game they wouldn't have have been showing so much of it in trailers and demos.

Eppulate was worn on the left side. Army captains worn their on the right. Also Leutenant's place was on the left of the battle line.

Hey, Alex, it's pronounced that way because it's partly a french (the lew) word and British were--historically--not big fans of the French.

You know what would of been cooler, if Ubisoft didn't show this and left it as a cool surprise in the game, but that never happens anymore always got to show the best parts to sell a game that noone needed selling on.

@TheVampireBoy i'm british and your statements are nonsense. A lot of American English is actually old English or derivations thereof. As for the 'colour' thing that was just Johnson being a francophile, we used to have stupid shit like 'emperour' as well. Webster disagreed with that since the -or form was in common use in Britain and America at the time, so it's actually more pragmatic.

Another example of this horse shit is the whole aluminum/aluminium thing. 'Alumium' was the original name, neither of us is really 'right'.

As for Lieutenant, well that's a french word British people either couldn't read, pronounce, or stomach at the time. Americans pronounce it 'correctly', we corrupted it and fucked it up.

Remember that language evolves over time and to stifle these changes and idiosyncracies would make it dead and dull.

I commend you on standing up for the truth against your own countrymen rather than just joining in on the classic "I'm not from America so I'm going to trash them any chance I can get cuz it's cool to hate them" thing I see going on at least once in every other forum post.

Hip hip hooray!

@DFSVegas:Soccer? A term coined in England??? You do realize that football was invented by the Romans. Right. It still troubles me how football is classed as one of England's biggest export, which is wrong. Sure we refined the sport, but the Romans were the ones who invented the primary components and rough layout of the game.

I didn't say they invented the sport, I said they coined the term (and take a massive amount of umbrage when it's used). Did you even read what I posted?

Hey, I got an idea for both British and American English: how about all of you people just stop using the word "epic" when you're describing anything for at least 3 or 4 years from now on? Can you please do that? Thank you.

This still does nothing to show what actual gameplay of this boat stuff actually looks like. Stitching together various shots willy nilly is not informative. All this shows to me is "this is what we're trying to do with the boat stuff".

I was always a bit puzzled by "leftenant" but I suppose it's not much of a criticism when you consider how far off both British and American pronunciations are from the original French.

As a Canadian I'm more than happy to spell colour with a u but neither colour nor lieutenant are English creations. Let's keep some perspective on what ownership of a language really means.

What is this word "Leughtenant" anyway? It doesn't seem to be in any dictionary.
