    CD's?

    Trolololol.

Seriously though, I love how I only need two boxes in my media centre- my amp and my PS3. It's nice not having to play bloody Jenga with my electronics.

I officially don't understand Nintendo, the Wii U design is pretty ridiculous but at least interesting, but I have no idea what the fuck they're going for anymore.  They move technology forward in certain areas, but I thought the damn thing would at LEAST support DVDs...it's bad enough I thought blu-ray support was too much to hope for.  It doesn't matter to me, I don't own a Wii and will probably never buy the new one, I guess they figure people have enough DVD players, etc. and that a game console should prioritize gaming.  It just seems so easy (and commonplace and damn near mandatory) to have game consoles that can play movies.  This started with PS2 for fuck's sake.

On a different note, damn I love my PS3.

I literally have too many DVD players. A PS3, a PS2, a couple of regular DVD players + HDD recorders. Iwata is right, they don't need it to play DVDs.

a license for dvd playback is about $10.

this is just nintendo continuing to "not care" about technology.

yeah this doesn't surprise me. or maybe it does?. not putting dvd playback in the system really just confuses me even more about what the hell this system is going to be. it has a slick ipad like controller. but the range is going to be extremely short from what i've heard. it has a hard drive, but its going to be only like 10 gigs or something. just what the hell?! when i first saw this thing i thought nintendo might have something here in terms of a multimedia console. pushing video from the controller to the tv is pretty cool stuff. but then i read this and realize who im dealing with. i bet you 10 Brad bucks it will be a year before Netflix is supported.

Not really surprising when you can obviously see the world is turning to streaming for their movies. Anyways, I have at least 10 devices within reaching distance that are capable of playing DVDs.

Meh, no big deal.  Give me a dedicated Blu-Ray player with all the trimmings anyway.   Besides, Nintendo's not going to pay licensing costs for their system that's already going to likely be the most expensive product they've ever put out.

Good. I have more than enough machines capable of playing DVDs as it is, and I'd rather not pay extra for another.

I don't mind this at all, and think Nintendo's reasoning is sound (at least for BluRay--it could easily play DVDs). Iwata's right--I've already got plenty of devices for playing that stuff, and if i keeps the cost down, fine with me.

I don't know if someone said this already but surely Nintendo are missing out on a great opportunity here, at least regarding playing dvd's? So Ma or Da comes home from work and the kids are watching finding Finding Nemo for the millionth time. Wouldn't it be great if they could stream the shit onto the wii controller and let the kids watch that while they stick on the TV for half an hour and chill? I think that could be a good selling point for people with kids. A DVD liscence can't cost much these days surely?

If I didn't already have a console (and I currently have an xbox), I would want to buy one that could at the very least play DVDs but would probably want one that is a blu ray player too because I don't already have one. Trying to ignore what I already know, I think that means I would go for a PS3.

It seems to me that Nintendo are saying "fuck it, on the most part we are replacing the Wii, which can't play this either, so it's no loss to the buyer" and at the same time saying and those who come to us from the xbox or the ps3 can already play this stuff, so we need not do it too". Seems like Nintendo is very happy to play second fiddle to Microsoft and Sony.

Whilst I can understand that most people will certainly already have a solution in place for playing DVD's, it seems somewhat stingy to omit this from the Wii U. Up till now 'convergence' has been the buzz word. Is this the start of a trend to go back to dedicated devices for a specific purpose?

So they think I have a PS3 already? I might need to buy it now, thanks to Nintendo... Heh, quite amusing actually.

Been holding back since I couldn't even buy some old PS2 games for that bulky thing because I think it won't run any. My current generation has been pretty much Xbox360 and Steam oriented.

    I don't see the problem.

    1) Because I haven't collected physical media in years anyway. I can't remember the last time I bought a dvd.
    2) Things are being pushed more towards digital media now
    3) It will probably have netflix.
    4) I honestly can't imagine anyone even remotely interested in the console doesn't already own a dvd player anyway.

Also, I'd like to believe that this means the console would be cheaper as a result.

I understand the Wii U will play Nintendo games so I'm sold!
As long as I can transfer all my Wiiware and VC my Wii will finally start 'gathering dust'  and I'll get my Gamecube back out to play those games.

god why is everyone freaking out about this, most of the comments say that this is a horrible idea. dude it's a video game console, it's made to play games, not movies. sure dvd and blue ray support would be nice but iwata is right, you probably already have a dvd player so why does it matter? and im glad they made this decision because this means that it will cost less.

While it's not a necessity to have a console that supports DVD, or Blu-Ray, it seems a bit, I don't know petty to not support either function...

Cool. So I don't have to worry about parts made for video games crapping up my console because it wasn't built for playing movies....
Y'know, like the PS2, the Xbox, the Xbox 360, the PS3....
I love my 360, btw. Just...y'know...I didn't have to pay for it.

There system still isnt playing with the big boys huh? I mean the whole reason to do this was make Wii HD basically. But no HD formats can run on it? This would let me move the Wii from my main TV, but I have to leave it with the DVD player or the PS3, and then it doesn't get used. Adding at least DVD would cost pennies at this point, dumb move i think.

big deal! guess what since i have purchased my ps3 3 and half  years ago i havent  watched  a blu ray plus i use a DVD player if really want to see  amovie which is rather rare sumwhat unbelievable  its been only used for PS Home  youtube or surfing through the net  occasianally or  for watching high quality music videos (vidzone) so the news of Nintendo doesnt bother me at all.   when i bought my Game Cube back in 2004  i seriously  couldnt care less that it didnt support DVD
At the end   the reasons are justified .if your a true gamer you only care of  its graphical power and most importantly  interesting games.

Yet more Nintendo bullshit... Sure people may have dvd or bluray but wouldn't that be a nice "Extra" to sell? Sure people have Netflix but seeing as people in Canada Just got Netflix with the lowest possible streaming setting and a abysmal selection I'll gladly stick with a physical copy of Bluray or Dvd. Though, if the Wii or Wii U had this i may have turned it on in the last year or so... Yep keep shooting yourself Nintendo.

Nintendo just keeps providing with more and more reasons to skip the Wii U...
