A Closer Look At Borderlands' New Style

Gearbox has tossed out some new screenshots, giving a clearer picture of what this suddenly stylized shooter is going to look like.

Some ballyhoo was made recently about Gearbox's long-silent loot-driven shooter Borderlands and the new, slightly more cartoon-like visual style it suddenly reappeared with. Publisher 2K put out a handful of new screenshots today showing off more of this new style.

Personally, I'm all for this aesthetic shift; it's usually a good idea for games in crowded genres to carve out a unique identity any way they can (though, Borderlands already had somethin' goin' on with that whole million-possible-guns thing). These shots look great, though I really want to see the game in motion (and play it) before making any real value judgements. Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford had this comment on the change, which doesn't really tell you much of anything, other than that we'll (probably (hopefully)) see more of Borderlands soon (read: at E3).

“This month, PC Gamer’s cover story reveals the bold look and design of Borderlands,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software.  “Since the story broke, the response to Borderlands we’ve felt has been overwhelming and I cannot thank everyone enough for the support of the game they’ve shown.  We realize that curiosity about Borderlands is pretty high and so we’re releasing more screenshots today that we hope you enjoy.  We are excited to show more about the game soon.  Thanks again for your support.”

For the sake of comparison, here's a taste of what Borderlands used to look like before Gearbox went and changed things up.

What do you think about the change, looking at the two versions side by side? I'd definitely lean toward the new one; previously, the game looked a bit generic.

Looks great. I hope they kept the way you can blow off heads, arms and legs for human enemies

I saw the demo from E3 08 and it looked sick

The new art style looks like a huge improvement.  That alone makes me interested in the game, since I'm sick of looking at similar-looking games on my TV screen.

Yep, looks a lot like Prince of Persia ('Comic Book' rather than 'Cel-Shaded' I guess.).  I picked up PoP in a recent steam sale and I've gotta say it's one of the best looking games i've seen.

I hope they let you collect/swap parts to build your own guns, rather than just forcing you to use randomly generated ones.

I really like the new look. After looking at the old ones for the first time in awhile, I see that it would have looked stale and this new, Crackdown style really is something different.

Love the way it looks.  That style worked incredibly well for Crackdown, and it looks like Borderlands is doing that style far better than Crackdown did!!!  I'm not usually one to just buy a game for the graphics of it, but I think it just made my decision on picking this game up.  = D

Its the same style as PoP or Crackdown. It just doesn't seem like a neccesary move. It was already original. I'm not a fan

A few differences helps the game have a more memorable style as opposed the forgettable one the older screens show.

I think the change looks brilliant, but I'm pissed that when they re-worked the sniper guy, they took away his kilt. The kilt was so bad-ass! Damn.

I just saw the 4 player demo on X Play (- awesome).

Randy on the show explained how two in his team secretly resurrected the concept art in a secret project, without his knowledge, and that after seeing it he had no choice to give it the go ahead.  I think It's largely due to the style of graphics that they're able top push so much in the game. Apparently the game is huge, Gearbox's biggest according to him.

Once again, the 4 player MP looks awesome.
