"Anonymous" Deems Sony's Hacker Litigation Totally Uncool, Goes to War

If you can't connect to PSN today, it's because your strict, disciplinarian principal and that weird kid who likes making pipe bombs are having a spat.

If you are a reader of the corners of the Internet currently dedicated to the game industry, you have probably heard the many twists and turns regarding the tale of of George "GeoHot" Hotz, who, after his successful run as "the guy who jailbroke the iPhone," moved onto hacking of the PlayStation 3 firmware and getting sued by Sony for it. It's been an amusing, interesting story up to this point, with blogs frantically tracking GeoHot's out-of-country sojourns and rap video legal statements like he was the game industry's version of the Hipster Grifter, or something.

Cue teary-eyed guy sobbing
Cue teary-eyed guy sobbing "LEAVE PLAYSTATION 3 ALONE!"

Over the course of this week, this story has gotten markedly less amusing and decidedly more uncomfortable, thanks to the actions of notoriously dogged and frequently butthurt hacker group Anonymous, who put out a really adorable threatening statement declaring Sony's civil suit against GeoHot and fellow hacker Alexander "Graf_Chokolo" Egorenkov an affront to hackers everywhere, and warning that they would get their DDoS on with the PlayStation Network as a result of Sony poking their hornet's nest.

Now it appears Anonymous is making good on its threats, with a variety of reports regarding connectivity issues on the PlayStation 3 popping up all over the place. Sony, for their part, has remained relatively mum on the subject, with a moderator forum post on the European PlayStation forums simply offering up a series of known error codes, and a statement that read, "We are currently looking into this and I will update the thread as more information becomes available." Translated from legally approved corporate speak, that roughly translates to, "Uhhhhh...crap?"

== TEASER ==Oh, but that's not all. According to the blog PlayStation Lifestyle, a splinter sect of Anonymous, calling themselves "Sony Recon," has vowed to take things several ominous steps further by digging up all sorts of personal info on Sony executives and their families--including Sony bigwig Sir Howard Stringer--and doing mean stuff with it. That would include the following Internet equivalents of flaming dog crap on a doorstep:

Craigslist – Make a ad in the “free stuff” section, or in “erotic services” and “casual encounters” as is evident here there are many horny men who will relentlessly pursue someone who they believe to be 19/f.

STD Postcards – send one of these e-postcards notifying the target that one of their previous sexual partners has a STD. Makes for an uncomfortable wait for them. Alternatively call an AIDS hotline and ask them to anonymously tell the target they could have HIV, thats a 6 month wait until the test comes back.

Free UPS Boxes create an account and order the target a couple of hundred boxes & labels, fedex also offer free boxes.

Google Maps use Google maps to locate local businesses to mess with the target.

Call them:

Skype – Use skype to call the target. When you first register a skype account you get one free call…

IP Relay – Ask the operator not to announce at the start of the call. This is a service only available to people in the USA.

Things got even more surreal today when a writer for PlayStation Lifestyle was allowed into the group's inner sanctum--an IRC channel, natch--and given the opportunity to talk to a bunch of these computer-lab Tyler Durdens directly. The resulting story reads a lot like that one time that ABC reporter interviewed Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan, except like a bajilliondy times less intimidating.

What does any of this mean to you, the player of games? Well, for starters, because of some dudes with an anarchistic streak and a slightly overbearing sense of "protecting their own," you may be having some issues with getting online with your PlayStation 3. Anonymous has made it clear that they have no intention of screwing with average consumers or doing anything malicious with any hacked account information--but they pretty much already are screwing with the average consumer. Nobody within Anonymous seems to be too concerned with inconveniencing console owners, because let's face it, when hackers get on their "noble thief" high horse, consumer inconvenience comes second banana to taking down "the establishment."

Anonymous has also stated that they have no intention of messing with journalists who write about them, citing the need for free speech over any desire to control how their "message" is spread. Regardless, I just went ahead and canceled all my credit cards and changed all my passwords, just in case.

Why should they just sit back and take that? "
That's exactly the point people keep missing, if he hacked the system and just did what he wanted with it, it would of been all fine and dandy. But as soon as he posted it on the net, and declared it with that video and shit, that's where it all went down hill for him. "
Yeah, Sony is butt-hurt.  Apple didn't QQ like a bitch when he released the jailbreak that allows for pirated apps, Google didn't bitch like a pussy when George started to hack Android stuff, and Microsoft gave George a god damn free Windows Phone 7 in the hopes that he hacks it and gives it to people who own WP7.  You can share it, Sony is just pulling straws and when George wins the case, he'll just hit harder when Sony releases the NGP. "
Apple was actually totally not OK with people jailbreaking their phones. As a matter of fact, just the other day they told Toyota to get the hell off of Cydia.

The only difference between the two companies is that Apple is better at saving face than Sony.

No the difference between the two companies is that Sony will actively hurt their own retail customers to protect their internal customers, they have actively acted against their customers' best interests before and continue to do so.  This is just more of the same from a company who has a known enmity for their own consumers.

@Sharpshooter: No maybe about it, you're jumping the fucking gun a DDOS is not the same as flying a plane full of civilians into a building full of civilians and a slippery slope argument is a fallacy.
I said this multiple times in the last thread, and I"m only saying it once here, what anonymous was doing was civil disobedience, no shit it targeted customers who aren't at fault, that's the whole point. By interrupting your usual schedule it got you talking/caring about the issue. This is the same basic idea as sit ins at lunch counters in the civil rights movement, that disrupted random patrons from being able to get sandwiches even if they did nothing wrong, but that's the whole damn point.

Well, I suppose if we're taking their current case as a whole, a better comparison for Sony right now would be the RIAA. Their ham-fisted approach to stopping piracy and wanton attempts at invading people's privacy speaks volumes for how out of touch they are with the world. Should they try to protect what belongs to them? Yes, of course they should. Should they try to make life miserable for everyone tangentially related to the PS3 homebrew scene? Certainly not.

Perhaps I sold Apple a bit short. I was trying to indicate that they didn't take it on the chin like I thought was previously being indicated, but they certainly didn't embark on a semi-retarded lawsuit against the wrong people, either. And while that may have been because Apple accepted it as done, I'd like to think it's more because Apple didn't want to look as foolish as Sony is looking right now.

Due to one group of dicks disabling an advertised feature of said little plastic box for pretty much no reason. (Note: the group of dicks I'm referring to isn't the hackers)

You're not mistaken but breaking DMCA means breaking the law in many cases and can end in jail time should he not have the funds to pay the fine.

@Gorehorn:  For one Microsoft has been slowly adding features to the Xbox while Sony has been slowly removing them from the PS3.   Yeah Sony cut the price by 200 by removing things from the system. Microsoft cut price by 80 while adding things one of these is not like the other.

I'll agree that   Anonymous is childish but Sony is no better so fuck them both. If I side with anyone it's  Hotz .

Sony being a Japanese  company Using USA laws to punish someone for doing with something he bought and payed for as he pleased. As I see it  once the money passed hands they have no say what he does with the hardware.  Sony is trying to lockup/bankrupt someone because they didn't play with their  toy which isn't even theirs   the way they wanted them to. Let alone Sony breaking just about every internet  privacy law I can think of  while throwing this tantrum.

I'll even voice my  bias Sony has ripped me off twice and I'll never trust them or buy from them again that includes ever buying a ps3.

Sony hasn't been adding features???  Really??

From 2007 to present,

Cloud storage for game saves

3D support for Blu Ray and PS3 games

PlayStation Plus

Auto Downloading added

Photo Gallery app added to XMB

Video Editor & Uploader added to XMB

PlayStation Move support

Trophy enhancements

SDK changes to reduce RAM footprint for PS3 OS

Emulator for playing PS3 minis

Facebook app added to XMB

Support for dynamic custom themes

BBC player app added to XMB

Remote play support for mobile phones

Netflix added to XMB

PlayStation Video store added

Added support for full screen display of Adobe Flash 9 content

Added DivX VOD support

Added in game screenshot support

Support for HP printers added

Added PlayTV

Support for DivX, XviD, AVCHD, SACD and WMV files added

Remote play with PSP added

Many many fixes and enancements to Blu Ray and HDMI support

And for the removed features?  Other then OtherOS and unlicensed USB controllers, not much else.  In fact, a look at the WikiPedia page for the PS3 system software shows 5 mentions of removed features and 100 for added.  Add to that free online multiplayer and the freedom to use whatever hard drive I like and things look pretty good for PS3 owners.

So tell me, what has Microsoft done for the 360 owners over the same 4 years?  Other than a much needed hardware re-design, a small price drop and HD-DVD?

I hate anonymous, namely because their methods are oh-so ridiculously dramatic, and think filth translates into humor to their ilk and fear for enemies. All they ever really do is annoy people. However, I find their drama mildly amusing, although that amusement is slightly ruined by me being constantly reminded of how cool they think they are. I really wanna know who decided to use that music in their "threat" and either give them a hi-five or a punch in the face.

A lot of corporate shills in here tonight. Man, a lot of you have become apathetic and passive. It must be all the video games killing all your motivation other than to.. play video games. It's a good thing that there weren't attitudes like this back in the 60s, when the population needed to voice themselves against governments and corporations. I think we still do need this, to make our voice heard when we see something we deem to be unjust. Anon is doing this. Sure, it may annoy you or inconvenience you, but it's the same thing as a protest outside of a building you need to enter.

The moment we decide that making our voices heard, even if you don't agree with said voices, is the moment that democracy dies.

Also, if someone is going to stand up for my right to turn my PS3 into a blu ray capable XBMC box (eventually), or make it possible to change my text message sound on my iphone, more power to them. This is the bottom line here folks.

That, and draconian use of personal information by a multinational corporation. (suing for lists of users that accessed information, with no evidence of even acting on it)

I don't particularly like Anon, and barely care about their motivations here, but the way people have always reacted to them has always really pissed me off. This article is just a prime example of what irks me about the reaction. It always makes having a discussion on the actual issue at hand impossible. I guess it's way easier for Alex to write a snarky article full of cutting pop-culture references in a hipper-than-thou attempt at positioning himself as above the losers in Anon.

I guess I'm sort of free-range ranting here about a broader topic than the actual issue of Anon's cyber-attacks on Sony, because all of the discussion lately on hacking, hackers, consumer rights, and piracy, has really pissed me off. The whole debate is full of such disingenuous commentary and rank hypocrisy that I can't stand to listen to it at this point.

It's always super easy for the sake of appearances to hate on hackers and pirates at the same time you conveniently forget about that movie you torrented once, those import games you tinkered around on your system with to play, or that porn you downloaded, or that modding you or your friend did to one of your systems, or that game you emulated that one time.

Were I a betting man I'd go so far as to say that nearly everyone in the GB community has done one of the above things. And I know that at least Vinny has illegally downloaded, and Brad has emulated games before, judging from past podcasts. But no one's up in arms about that, are they? They're special. I bet even Alex, his strong outrage and positively adorable pop culture references and all, has done several of the above just the same. That doesn't ever stop the hypocritical outrage though, does it, whenever there's a new story over piracy or hackers, or the amount of lynch mobbing in internet comments that comes with them?

Ugh, I guess this is wildly off topic to a much more broad issue, but it irks me nonetheless. I think religion is bunk, but, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" comes to mind.

I'm no fan of hackers in general but what Sony really should be butt hurt about is that even with a modded PS3, people still aren't having any fun with it.

The year 2000 called, they want their controller back.

Have they actually done anything useful?  Everything they do is more or less self-serving.

Newfags =/= Anon

Don't lump all of 4chan into one group.  You'll piss off /b/, and every other section.

@Marokai: Using an emulator isn't illegal. The illegal part would be you either selling an emulator for profit, or pirating the ROM you're using the emulator for.

Also, illegally downloading one movie isn't the same thing as DDoSing a company with the specific intent of shutting down their services, or breaking into someone's online profile and publicly posting their real name, home address, and phone number, and harassing them in real life, such as calling their house and threatening them physically.

But I totally see what you're saying. We're all just as bad as Anonymous.

Their actions being self serving doesn't preclude them being useful or helpful to the world at large.

What did this guy do after hacking to the PS3 firmware? Did he do it to prove that he can or did he do something malicious?

I'm sorry but I'm on what is most likely /v/'s side, Sony picked Hotz out to make an example of him when they have no right to tear someone apart for modifying something he bought. Sony absolutely deserves this for being a bunch of cocksuckers.

@CaptainCody: Yeah, breaking the law is totally okay. Because Sony's totally breaking the law, right?
