April Sales Released, With Mortal Kombat Koming Out on Ktop

And Portal 2 wasn't far behind.

Mortal Kombat, slicin' up the competition.

Salesality.

Is that word? Did it have to be done? No.

But what it represents is true: Mortal Kombat dominated the charts in April, selling 900,000 copies across both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, according to the latest data released by the NPD Group. Portal 2, which also had a PC and Mac release, came up a close second, but sales data wasn't released. Less than 900K, obviously!

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals did not chart in the top ten in April, but that's because NPD did not combine the sales of the regular $59.99 game and the more expensive PlayStation Move bundle. Had the two numbers been combined, NPD noted, SOCOM 4 would have broken into the top ten list.

Here are the top ten games for the month:

  1. == TEASER ==Mortal Kombat
  2. Portal 2
  3. Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  5. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters
  6. Crysis 2
  7. Just Dance 2
  8. Michael Jackson: The Experience
  9. Pokemon White
  10. NBA 2K11

In terms of hardware, Microsoft came out on top, pushing 297,000 units. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP all say year-over-year sales improvements from April 2010, while Nintendo's Wii did not. An upcoming price drive to $150, however, should spur Wii into more hands, as Nintendo prepares to transition hardware.

gotta admit, i thought portal 2 would have sold more. Especially with it going on sale super quick. I bought both though.

I should probably get MK.

Posted by CornBREDX

I figured as much- considering how many are talking about it and how awesome the game is it deserves the sales. Portal 2 deserves its place as well- Only thing I wasnt sure of is which sold more.

Both well deserving games- they're both worth buying.

Portal 2 doing well on consoles, good to see.

You're right, I would rather have no news, than news that I may not care about and am not forced to read.

That's.... a good title. Kongrats!

Damn I thought Portal 2 would come out on top.

I don't get the COD fanbase....they bitch non-stop but keep buying it in tenfolds.

Posted by udabenshen

I bet if they had steam sales, portal 2 would be number one.  Whatever though, MK and Portal are both awesome.

Yeah wtf its 40 bucks now on amazon and I bought it last week for 60, sad face.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised Black Ops is still up there, but I am.  How can there be that many people still buying that game?  Figured they'd have all bought it well before now, but I guess not.

Pokemon White? That's racist.

Did you divine that it was a close second?

@Marino: How is the Association?  I played through one season in 2010 and didn't feel like playing another, and that's mainly why I play.  I may go for 2k11 when it goes on sale in the summer like usual.

@CrazyBagMan:

This is the most logical thing I've ever seen written on Giant Bomb. DOWN WITH KONTENT I DON'T HAVE TO LOOK AT.

no surprise here, Mortal Kombat is awesome!

Posted by ShaneDev

Where in the top ten would SOCOM have come? Crysis 2 is still selling but I was surprised to see the drop off in player numbers for Crysis 2 on Xbox360 at least. It wasn't even in the top 20 games played last week.

NPD on Giant Bomb? this was like the one place to get away from NPD numbers. damn you Patrick!

Good on the people for buying Lego Star Wars III !

I liked to see this, you should keep doing this Patrick!

Guessing this doesn't include Steam sales of Portal 2, so Mortal Kombat probably lost and rightly so.

Agreed. Considering Valve even said Portal 2 had the best release figures on Steam since Half Life 2, I'm sure they're pretty happy.

Not really.
These are console only numbres.
Without Steam sales.

It's the first basketball game I've played in five years, so I'm probably not the best judge of quality, but yeah, it's really good.

I think across all 4 (or 3.5) platforms Portal 2 definitely sold more.  However MK did win out on consoles and a solid showing for a game that deserves it.

Posted by Bestostero

Ed Boon also mentioned on his twitter that they actually sold over 1 million including the special/tournament editions!

So more congrats to Mortal Kombat!!!

Three Ks?  KKK?   What kind of message is Patrick trying to send us in the title of this article?

Posted by GunnBjorn

Wow, didn't expect that. I'm not surprised it sold well, but topping Portal 2 is quite a feat.

I don't know about that, there has been a lot of hype for this Mortal Kombat and it has always sold well. Portal is a lot more niche.

I'm glad Crysis 2 is no where near the top

and glad to see Portal 2 kicking ass
Posted by rectum_abominae

just commenting to let you guys know ktop is hilarious.

Posted by Greenlight13

Who the hell is still buying Black Ops and NBA 2K11? I mean I love NBA, play it all the time, but for those two titles to be shifting enough to make the charts this many months after release... shocking to me.

Posted by craigbo180

The Ktop in the title of this post is an absolute travesty.

you should it blows MVC3 out of the water in every way!
MK is soooooooo gooooooood.
Posted by Sin4profit
@chiefmegadeth: i Pre ordered LA Noire on Amazon so i'll probably use the $15 credit to get MK.
Posted by TurboMan

Hey guys

Portal 2 sold a lot of Steam Copies

... probably would push them over MK if it counted.

I suck at sports and sport games, but i found it quite good... :P

Steam doesn't disclose their sales so you're likely missing a very large chunk of the picture.
