Army of Two Getting a 'Mature, Gritty' Reboot for Some Reason

The Devil's Cartel will still feature cooperative dude merc-ing, this time amid the drug wars of Mexico.

Game Informer's upcoming cover image. Yep, that looks about right for an Army of Two game.
Game Informer's upcoming cover image. Yep, that looks about right for an Army of Two game.

Oh Army of Two. Has there been a franchise in recent memory more incapable of making good on its potential than this one? The first game, while not a disaster, never quite managed to pull off its attempts at irreverence amid cooperative mercenary combat. The second one...well, let's just pretend that game never happened. Now EA has announced a third Army of Two game, and it will be the "more intense, mature, and gritty" reboot of the series that I'm not sure anyone was actually asking for.

The game, titled The Devil's Cartel, is in development at Visceral Games' Montreal studio, and will employ DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. It stars Alpha and Bravo, two mercenaries under the employ of Tactical Worldwide Operations who find themselves in the middle of Mexico's unfortunate war between drug cartels. This may rightfully give you some really bad flashbacks to the painfully unpleasant tone of Call of Juarez: The Cartel, but according to the press release, as well as this cover teaser posted on Game Informer's website, The Devil's Cartel will attempt to take its setting a good bit more seriously than its predecessors did.

My question is, does anyone want that? I always wanted to enjoy the Army of Two games, but my problem with them wasn't that they weren't gritty or serious enough. My problem was that save for a few moments of legitimately creative levity, most of the series' limp attempts at comedy fell flat. This one seems like it's targeting those who were more focused on the co-op shooting than the story, so maybe this'll work just fine for them. I can't say I would be terribly excited for a jocular take on the Mexican drug wars, anyway. Fist bumping over the bodies of innocent victims of drug violence just feels, I don't know, slightly inappropriate.

You tell me. Does the idea of a more serious business Army of Two sound like something you'd want to play?

Yeah I don't think I'm interested in playing it. I'll probably still read about the details when I pick up this month's issue.

@damswedon: because they need that for face mask skin DLCs

lol that would be sooo horrible considering the second AO2 had the create your own skin that anyone could download for free.

I remember playing and my buddy and I had a crazy accurate Iron Man mask and a Green Ranger mask that someone else made in that game.

How could you care about the story that happens between two dudes, when their names are ALPHA and BRAVO? I couldn't give a thundering fuck about that type of story.

Glad to see EA just shitting out another sequel with no regards to it's quality. The characters were not exactly deep, but at least they had some personality. I agree that the Saints Row approach would have been much more interesting.

I didn't think the first game was all that great (or all that terrible), but this proposed direction sounds worse. Then again, I need some good co-op games in my life. Not holding out hope, but it would be great to be pleasantly surprised.

So what if the last two weren't that great, this sounds somewhat interesting, OK, so not so much, but I like Visceral and I like the Frostbite Engine.

I was sorta into the co-op aspects of the earlier games. Too bad they controlled like a pile of shit.

Oh man...did they really need to reboot this fun mindless over-the-top series? Loved played those with my bro!

Does that means that the 3rd game "Army of Four" got canceled"?

My question is, does anyone want that? I always wanted to enjoy the Army of Two games, but my problem with them wasn't that they weren't gritty or serious enough.

Blah :/

That's obviously because of this stupid kind of thought they're rebooting it on the first place!!

My friend and I absolutely loved the co-op of the first two games. The ridiculous bromance of it, and crazy choices you had to make. SHOOT A TIGER?! Yes.

We will probably still play the shit out of this game, but I'm sure we will miss Salem and Rios bigtime.

Maybe third times a charm? Never could understand why the feel the need to keep this brand alive, but I'm sure it makes sense on a spreadsheet somewhere.

I honestly don't care which direction it takes, as long as the game is a fun co-op ride as the previous two were.

I think these games get more shit than they deserve. Yes the "humor" is horrid and all the bro-yness can be a bit much, but they are perfectly good couch co-op games. That said, I think that this game should be dumped on someone other than Visceral since they should be focusing all their efforts on the one EA property that hasn't gone to complete shit.... yet.

The only reason I would play this game is because of the couch co-op. It's a pretty bad shooter game, but I am sure my brother and I have played worse. Terminator: Salvation comes to mind.

I'm not quite sure how you do a more intense and gritty reboot of Army of Two, it's pretty darn gritty and action-filled to begin with. The thing that worries me most though is that I feel like there's a lot of potential for this game to be insulting in the way it deals with the drug war. It's a conflict that has involved depressing amounts of murder, rape, and sex trafficking, with no clear end in sight. As Alex said, this could very well be another Call of Juarez: The Cartel, or worse. I'd love to see a mature and respectful take on it from video games, but I look at that promotional image with the flying debris, big explosion behind them, and those dumb masks and it doesn't exactly help convince me this is going to be it. I sincerely hope this isn't the insulting insensitive game it looks like it could be.

I don't really see how a more mature take benefits Army of Two either though, as silly as it all may be, once you take out the golden guns, the fist bumps, the hyper-macho dialogue, and the "Fuck yeah, bloody murder and PMCs" tone of the experience, I think you've taken out significant chunks of what makes Army of Two stand apart from other third-person shooters, and it's not like it's a million miles from Gears of War to begin with.

I don't understand why so many people are complaining. I mean, sure the last two weren't anything special, and that could be where it hsa gone wrong, but I think you have to give this one a little more hope, it's from a great developer, Visceral, and it's also using one of the greatest engines. I really can't care less about the last two, I didn't even play the second (though at a time, I did want to), but I am willing to give this a chance, and I think it will be better than the other two. It might even be great. I think the point is, this has a lot of potential.

Of course the only way to make a series better is to make it darker, grittier, bloodier too. We just don't have enough of those games anymore, when was the last time we got to play a modern military shooter that took itself serious?

@rebgav: Don't you get it? Making stuff gritty and realistic automatically makes everything better! There is nothing more gritty than the bromance of two big strong men in silly masks killing hundreds of people while making pop culture jokes and fist bumping, all set around the bloody Mexican drug wars! SO SERIOUS AND GRITTY!!!!!!!! /sarcasm

liked the first two for what they were, good times with a buddy on xbla. Agree with most though, making it more realistic and "grittier" is probably not at all what i would have voted for in a AoT3.

Oh well, color me mildly interested anyway.

I actually liked the second one. They really improved the controls over the first one. I enjoyed the weapon crafting. Its probably also worth noting that I just finished playing through Max Payne 3 and really enjoyed it. Kinda refreshing not to play a cover based third person shooter where you're kill in aliens.

According to the Game Informer article they are

  • Keeping customization
  • Getting rid of player interaction like fist bumping and headbutts. "We don't want the controller to become the medium in which the players interact with each other."
  • Aggrometer is gone
  • Complete shift in tone. No jokes or bro'ing out. You're going to be dealing with civilians who have been slaughtered by the Mexican drug lords.

Yes, I enjoyed the first two Army of Two games and am looking forward to the third one, and the choice of Visceral and Frostbite looks promising to me in this regard. Beside, while I'll miss Salem & Rios, I very much hope they'll star a mixed couple next time... =]

There's bound to be sprinkles of humor in there, though. I mean, not full-on panda-fucking jokes, but an occasional line or something. Also, I want to hear more about the customization. That's always been the one sticking point of my love with Army Of Two.

I loved the first two games for one playthrough on the couch with my best friend over too many beers. I found the lighthearted goofy tone surprising and inspired for the fun "bro-op" style they were going for. It's lack of being gritty and mature is what set it apart. But my best friend and I don't talk anymore, so maybe some deeply powerful gaming experience will come from us each playing it with the AI teammate while drinking alone, crying?

Weird, I actually kind of liked the first Army of Two game. It was a decent enough couch co-op game. I follow this to see what they do with it.

Same here. I actually didn't even mind the single player too much. I'm just honestly eager to see what's going to be done in another title.
