Army of Two Getting a 'Mature, Gritty' Reboot for Some Reason

The Devil's Cartel will still feature cooperative dude merc-ing, this time amid the drug wars of Mexico.

Game Informer's upcoming cover image. Yep, that looks about right for an Army of Two game.
Game Informer's upcoming cover image. Yep, that looks about right for an Army of Two game.

Oh Army of Two. Has there been a franchise in recent memory more incapable of making good on its potential than this one? The first game, while not a disaster, never quite managed to pull off its attempts at irreverence amid cooperative mercenary combat. The second one...well, let's just pretend that game never happened. Now EA has announced a third Army of Two game, and it will be the "more intense, mature, and gritty" reboot of the series that I'm not sure anyone was actually asking for.

The game, titled The Devil's Cartel, is in development at Visceral Games' Montreal studio, and will employ DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. It stars Alpha and Bravo, two mercenaries under the employ of Tactical Worldwide Operations who find themselves in the middle of Mexico's unfortunate war between drug cartels. This may rightfully give you some really bad flashbacks to the painfully unpleasant tone of Call of Juarez: The Cartel, but according to the press release, as well as this cover teaser posted on Game Informer's website, The Devil's Cartel will attempt to take its setting a good bit more seriously than its predecessors did.

My question is, does anyone want that? I always wanted to enjoy the Army of Two games, but my problem with them wasn't that they weren't gritty or serious enough. My problem was that save for a few moments of legitimately creative levity, most of the series' limp attempts at comedy fell flat. This one seems like it's targeting those who were more focused on the co-op shooting than the story, so maybe this'll work just fine for them. I can't say I would be terribly excited for a jocular take on the Mexican drug wars, anyway. Fist bumping over the bodies of innocent victims of drug violence just feels, I don't know, slightly inappropriate.

You tell me. Does the idea of a more serious business Army of Two sound like something you'd want to play?

Wow. Mature and edgy shooter. Just what we needed. And here I was thinking that the first two games were colorful and charming, standing out unique in a crowded market.

The dudes are called Alpha and Bravo. For fuck's sake, there's no amount of grittiness that can save this game with those names. "Dark and edgy" is obviously not the direction they need to take the franchise...

But, hey, it's using Frostbite 2, so it's gonna be the beastest gaenm eva, right?

Will I be able to enjoy these games by pretending the main characters are openly gay, or are they taking even that caveat away from me? No joke, The AoT games are significantly more bearable with the context that the main characters are in an open and loving relationship.

this franchise gets a lot of hate for some reason that i don't understand.

Regardless of how I may feel about a reboot, Army of Two provides a very solid co-op experience that i've constantly and immediately recommended to anyone looking for a co-op centric game.

I refuse to call it the best franchise in the world but geez, the tone of this article just shits all over the franchise

I'm totally with you. Alex probably also hates the A-Team and 80s action movies - because, you know, they don't reflect deeply on the violence and the humor isn't clever. :P

Seriously, I never got the impression that Ao2 was somehow offensive or insensitive.

Also, here's a badass trailer from the first Ao2:

Duuuumb. There's no need for more super-serious "gritty" games. EA, if you want to make a sequel, maybe send some Mirror's Edge 2 our way?!?!

Be careful what you wish for. Mirror's Edge might be the next game to get the "gritty reboot" treatment.

Oh god, you're right! EA is like one of those sarcastic, irony-laden, dickish genies where they give you three wishes and then you wish for a million dollars and then your parents die and you get a million dollar inheritance.

Sounds like they're taking all the character out of the series. This is the opposite of where I'd like to see them go. I guess we'll just have to see how it turns out, though.

Dark and gritty? No. They went the wrong way. I want stupid from this series. Turn up the bromance. Brighten the colors. Get some crazy Ratchet & Clank weapons in there. MAKE THEM SING THIS SONG:

This time instead of discussing who is the best member of the Wu-Tang Clan, now they will just recite the lyrics.

Can this generation just stop being gritty for one goddamned second, and make a game that doesn't take itself so seriously? More Saints Row The Third please if you're going to be a shooter.

1) Why make another Army of TWO game?

2) Isn't "mature and gritty" exactly the wrong direction to take that franchise? If they have to make another one, wouldn't it be more interesting to take it in the opposite direction and make the Saints Row 3 of military-inspired shooters? The customization and fist-bumping stuff was already ridiculous, it wouldn't have taken much to push it over the edge into complete and utter homoerotic murderboner lunacy.

THIS.

I wend and checked the sales of the two games.

Army of Two: 2.69 million

40th day: 1.81 million

That's a pretty big drop in sales. And for the most part it seem to be due to the tone of the story, people come for the bromance not some grimdark battle with "deep" morals

And they want to make the game more like 40th day tone?

Isn't EA smart?

I'm from Mexico and I must say I don't want a "dudebro" take of our country's widespread gang wars. Is kind of depressing and here already make fun in an awful impersonal way (or used as a political scapegoat/straw man argument)

I was just saying this to Mabel the other day, actually.

"So Mabel," I says, "you know what the world needs? Another realistic, gritty shooter, ESPECIALLY when it's based off an already mediocre series known more for its bad comedy than the decidedly meh gameplay"

Mabel didn't say much in reply as he was too busy ranting and raving about how he was almost world champ and then got lumped with the Viscera gimmick, but whatevs

I remember playing the game in co-op and constantly chest-bumping my partner - whether he wanted or not - was enough fun for me to want to play the game with someone else. If you're gonna make it more complicated than that, then I guess I'll have to wait and see what comes out of it. This all seems kind of vague to draw any conclusions.

That being said I don't think I'd ever want to play that game on singleplayer mode.

I don't think this is the worst news in the world, because the first games definitely had potential, and I'm glad to see them get away from the shitty characters, but it looks like they went from a shitty tone to a boring one.

I LOVE me some Army of Two. The first game was pretty woeful but there was a lot to be entertained by. Such as the awful broings-out between Salem and Rios, and pimping out your guns.

I thought the second game was a vast improvement. The bro-downs weren't as good, simply because they were more competently delivered by decent voice actors. The pimping wasn't as good either actually, but the gameplay was much better. The player choice moments really made that game for me though. You'd try doing the right thing, only to be tricked by the game for doing so.

Anyway, I'm totally down for more Army of Two. The only appropriate thing to do now is announce a new Kane & Lynch game. Those series are brothers in my eyes.

Speaking of brothers, what the hell is with no Salem and Rios in this new game? Unforgivable. Also "Tactical World Operations"? It's Trans World Operations, unless they reconned that, which is upsetting for no good reason.

Yeah, the amount of hate this is getting is really strange. Ao2 and Ao240th weren't bad games at all. And honestly they are still some of the better "Bro-Op" games out there ESPECIALLY for couch co-op. I guess some of it could be blames on the lean the article has but I don't recall anyone going "OH MAN THESE GAMES ARE TERRRRRRRIBLE" before today.

I think Army of two is a good concept and always willing to at least give it a chance. It doesn't hurt to look forward to something if you don't really know anything about it.

It's kind of funny when Alex says he's "Always wanted to enjoy" something, because for the past while he really hasn't enjoyed anything. what's up guy? Lay down on this couch.

I loved it when Army of Two was supposed to be comical and slap-stick. Why the fuck they had to go for something stupidly serious is beyond me. If it's to cater to an audience, they're perception of the consumer is totally skewed.

Not interested! Considering the end of the previous game and the fact (spoiler) you either chose to kill your partner or a bunch of innocent people.... They should just stop while they are ahead!
