As Expected, Apple Unveils a New iPad, Which Plays Video Games, Hence Why We Are Mentioning it Here

Epic Games and Namco show off some new gaming apps for Apple's new iPad, which is actually just called the new iPad for some reason.

We all knew it was going to happen, specifically because Apple pretty much said it was going to happen when they announced that they were having a press conference today, but that makes today's news of a brand spanking new iPad device no less thrilling for the something like a bajilliondy people out there who consume expensive Apple hardware like most people blow through toilet paper. I'm looking at you, Gary Whitta.

Yup. That sure is a new iPad.
Yup. That sure is a new iPad.

The new iPad--which, by the way, it is apparently literally called, in lieu of the iPad 3 or iPad HD names we'd seen kicked around--will use the oft-rumored retinal display, and features a pixel resolution of 2048x1536--meaning it's essentially 4x the resolution of the existing iPad and likely a higher resolution than your TV or computer monitor. The new iPad uses Apple's AX5 CPU/GPU combo, featuring quad-core graphics, though is still based on the Cortex A9, apparently. To put that in terms people who don't spend their entire day reading tech blogs might understand: it's got a real purdy screen and it's made out of GOES FAST.

As per usual, the device will come in twelve different models split across wi-fi only and network capable categories, sizes, and colors. This time, the iPad will support 4G LTE networks from both AT&T and Verizon. Pricing for the different devices ranges from $499 to $699 for the wi-fi only models, and the 4G LTE models will range between $629 and $829, depending on hard drive size. All of this will be available to those who pre-order or feel like standing outside of an Apple store for the next week and a half on March 16. The rest of us normal people will probably buy one a few months after that.

And yes, they even showed games. First up was Namco showing off its new flight simulator, a tragically Kenny Rogers-bereft game called Sky Gamblers. What little was shown of the game offered up something that looked a bit like a slightly down-res'd Ace Combat game, with all sorts of dogfighting action that managed to not look like an incredible chore to control...at least from a distance.

Next up was Mike Capps from Epic Games to show off another Infinity Blade thing, because honestly, why else would Mike Capps be there? Mike Capps showing Infinity Blade is the Apple conference equivalent of Punxsutawny Phil seeing his shadow every February.

It's got dungeons.
It's got dungeons.

This new Infinity Blade thing, by the way, is called Infinity Blade: Dungeons. It tasks the player with creating the "ultimate weapon" (presumably the titular blade) and also apparently features dungeons. You can see a picture snapped of the game in action that I stole from Engadget directly to the left of this paragraph.

As interesting as Infinity Blade: Dungeons looks (it does look quite sharp), the most intriguing thing to come out of Capps' appearance was his assertion that the new iPad would have more memory and higher resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, which sounds, quite frankly, insane, but according to resident Whiskey tech guy Will Smith--who may or may not have edited this post in an attempt to make my feeble attempt at tech blogging decipherable--it's 100% true. I'm sure he'll have a more detailed explanation of why over on Tested, which is probably where you think a post like this belongs anyway. [Ed: And here that very post is!]

So, there you have it. There is a new iPad. It looks neat, and still plays games. See you all next year!

Oh, and why are we surprised that the memory and power on this thing are better than consoles that are at least SIX FUCKING YEARS OLD? Apple releases a new one every single damned year, it better have more power.

The reason is that they have to worry about form factor & power consumption in ways that consoles don't. The tech driving it is probably more feature rich, but looking at raw graphical power for 3d rendering will probably fall in favor of the 6 year old consoles still.

That's a very good point, and well made. You actually bring up something I didn't think about. How long is this thing going to last between charges when playing graphically intense games? The 3DS and Vita are nearly Game Gear levels of laughable battery life, I can't imagine how quickly this thing'll go through power.

At some point, graphical power is going to have to stop being the sole focus for these things. We need better battery tech.

I have fallen under the cult of the Apple, all started when the wife needed a new computer so I got her an iMac and from there I found myself buying a Macbook Air and now the newer/shinier/upgraded iPad is on order for her. Somebody save me from Apple TV please as I am weak and know no better. I had better go listen to sad songs on my iPod touch :(

How is that an excuse? It is a fact that all those devices listed are Android devices, which are clearly completely and utterly different than W8. Hopes are very high for Windows 8 tablets and if you look at some videos and previews of it the OS and interface are miles ahead of anything else on the market. And to use Windows Phones as an example, they will be speedy, reliable, slick and stable.

Nobody is going to want an iPad after Windows 8 comes out and you can buy one device that can be used as both a tablet and as a laptop, and will let you browse all the Flash-based porn websites you want without any difficulty. I say that even though I agree that Flash sucks.

the new iPad would have more memory and higher resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, which sounds, quite frankly, insane

Uhm... just to put that statement into the right context: Resolution is not an performance benchmark, it's an option.

In the context of displays it's an performance benchmark, but the 360 and PS3 are not displays. They lack any display... they can only output stuff to displays. And even that is not an "performance benchmark" because HD consoles output resolution is mostly limited because Full HD TV's are limited to 1080p.

And having more memory then those ancient pieces of hardware is not really something really difficult. The PS3 and the 360 have been designed when memory still had somewhat more expensive (in an "how much you get for what money" sense). Nowadays memory production has become so dirt cheap that you can buy 8 GB of DDR3 ram for 30€.

Memory might be a performance indicator/benchmark but it's useless to have "lots of memory" when it's slow or when the remaining parts of the system, GPU and CPU, are not fast enough to supply the memory with actual data.

In short: No the next ipad won't be "something like a 360 or PS3 in terms of performance". Even trying to make that statement would be really difficult because on a hardware level it would be like comparing apples to oranges....

My screen is 2560x1600 @ 30inch. So no, it's not higher resolution. However what alex said remains true - about it being higher resolution than most users screens.

The thing is, it's kind of pointless. That's like saying I have to hook up my really expensive screen to a really low end pc (at best). Nothing would shine in even remotely the same way. Plus it can only play iphone games. Most of which probably won't run at a 1:1 ratio of that resolution. Video memory requirements become huge once you start heading into that screen resolution territory.

What I look forward to is the day they start downporting pc games (or console games at a higher resolution) to the ipad - and the ipad is powerful enough to justify that at 60fps.

That will be the day I go from my black and white, 40 dollar nokia phone to an ipad.

I won't be buying an ipad, but for gaming sites to ignore these devices would be incredibly stupid. The fact is, millions of people play (arguably bad) games on these things, and it's news worthy. So anyone complaining is stupid.

Yeah, I got an iPhone the other day and while browsing the App Store I had to go through waves upon waves of shitty iPhone games. There's not a single thing on there I'd ever consider buying. I even deleted my free Angry Birds haha

I've also been blocking people who send me Facebook games requests for years. I'll never understand the (massive) appeal of these things.

I still don't get tablets. I have a laptop for everything my mobile doesn't do. A tablet would give me a larger screen whilst out and about, but who needs that? And if you do need that, a small portable laptop would be even better, as it's more powerful and versatile, and has a hardware keyboard. True, tablets are smaller and lighter, but if you're going to bring a bag with your for the tablet in the first place (assuming you don't intend to carry it in your hand everywhere), then just go for the laptop and do the same thing. I know everybody's different, and obviously I am in the minority, especially as a tech geek, but like I say, I just don't get tablets. Until they are way more powerful, come with a dock that turns it into a laptop (like that new one, I forget the name), runs Windows and gives me the same experience as a laptop, aka the best of both worlds, that is.

Tablets are great in bed.

Jesus H Christ, when was the ipad ever fucking "revolutionary"? It was a big ass shinier iphone that had barebones features to begin with. If anything, the specs on this model seem a hell of a lot more enticing then the previous two models released. Fucking scumbags.

Was giving the iPad 3 some serious thought and ultimately decided against it. There's nothing it does that my laptop, iPhone, Vita, or desktop don't already do. Will need more convincing than just a high res screen (which is now industry standard) to make the plunge.

I think buying into every other Apple product is a good way to go. I own the Ipad 2 and love it, nothing about the new Ipad is really blowing me away, just extra bells but no whistles. It would a be fantastic bump for 1st generation Ipad owners though.

If they really wanted to reach me they have to work on making the damn thing lighter.

New ipad is fine, and cool, and all that stuff. But this story really upsets me because TV's and computer monitors are not getting that high resolution love. It's actually difficult to find a computer monitor higher resolution than 1080p, and when you do there's maybe 2-3 to choose from That is really sad to me.

Maybe I just want it on desktops because I do some graphic design, but I'm sure gamers would love that high resolution as well. It's simply crazy to me that tablets are getting love before desktop users. I only hope this leads to better big monitors.

To me, $500-800 is more valuable going toward a house down payment than to a shiny sometimes-Netflix viewer and occasional spur of the moment browser use device, that does some games. Count me in the group that hasn't really figured out the actual recreational need for a tablet.

Get your head out of your ass. It's because the Vita only costs $250.

Hrmm, I'm sure that's what the first reply was going for... Yeah no. That's like going to google phone forum and saying "I'd get an Iphone 4 before the Galaxy nexus." Then when told you're a brand loyalist, you come up with the " I said that because it's cheaper dude." Yeah, doesnt work.

Still pretending to know what you're talking about, huh? I'm not made of money, so I CAN'T buy an iPad. At current, I can't even afford a Vita. But when I do get the money, I'll have a better chance of getting a Vita than I will getting an iPad. I happen to think they're BOTH rather expensive, but one's cheaper than the other... care to guess which one? Anyone else would have understood by now. What's your excuse?

And who said anything about phones, genius?

I will eat my hat if this can play any demanding games at native resolution. The 360 and PS3 can barely play games at 720p (mist games are sub-HD) and the Vita only has 544p and it still has several games running at sub-native resolutions. How can a tablet play at 1536p when not even my PC could play any demanding game in that resolution?

consoles are pretty old. i suggest lots of ketchup for your hat.

This is completely pointless, who cares about a screen that small with that high resolution? TVs are 1080p and they're fine, hell even the text on PC is small on a 32" TV at 1080p

Because they can and it makes headlines. That's why.

Screen resolution doesn't mean text size will be small.

"The new iPad" is kinda a dumb name and doesnt that mean they CANNOT make any more iPads unless they call them "THE NEWERER iPAD"

It's not called "The New iPad" it says that because it's an iPad and it's NEW. There is nothing silly about it, the product is simply called "iPad/the iPad" can you really not work that one out? They are going back to the naming schemes without numbers, just like the iPod Touch, MacBook and the other iPods are named.

What is stupid, is that they are still calling the iPad 2 the iPad 2, and keeping it around with the new "iPad" way to confuse the average buyer, Apple.

I had really high hopes for the success of the Vita. And it's met them in every way except for market penetration. The DS never captured my interest, or the 3DS. The PSP did...but only until I tried the first FPS and felt crippled by the lack of a 2nd analog stick. I poo-poo'd talk of smart phones taking over portable gaming - the "portable" experiences are exactly what never interested me in gaming on a phone, let alone a DS.

But with Vita on a 5+ year cycle and tablets setting new benchmarks every year, along with the installed user base...the games will come. I don't see how Vita can survive. Throw a memory card slot on an iPad along with a console controller or a Project Fiona like peripheral and...how can Vita survive?

Throw Bluetooth phone functionality on a tablet and...even better, tablet cases will be (are?) the new man-purse.

Too bad Apples refusal to add a memory card slot and a USB/Thunderbolt port on the iPad is as bad as Vita's $99 memory cards.

This is completely pointless, who cares about a screen that small with that high resolution? TVs are 1080p and they're fine, hell even the text on PC is small on a 32" TV at 1080p, and it's hard to differenciate movies at 720p and 1080p at that size.

I think Apple just did this because they can, all they're going to get is stuff that doesn't run at that resolution and thus will look like crap.

And yes Alex, this article is marginally related to videogames, there are some for iPad, but cmon, cmon.

Because you don't sit 15 inches from your TV. Have you seen the iPhone 3 vs the iPhone4? Same difference here. I have a first gen iPad and welcome the increased resolution, especially for reading.

@hwy_61: It's been patched up a bit, but it's not been drastically overhauled, no.

Nice article, Alex. Um, I just want to point out that iPads don't have hard drives, therefore there is no "hard drive size". Thanks for writing though.

To put that in terms people who don't spend their entire day reading tech blogs might understand: it's got a real purdy screen and it's made out of GOES FAST.

And at this point I scroll up to see if Alex wrote this news article. Yup, sure did.

I'm still willing to wait another year on one of these until the next "new" model comes out. I wouldn't mind an Ipad but I'd want at least 32 gigs and I won't spend over $400 for one. So, I'll continue to wait until something reasonably priced with my desired specs is available. I just don't need one right now. Of course, if something doesn't appear before the release of the next generation of consoles, then Apple is out of luck for my money.

I could care less if this thing can run at better resolution and has more memory than the 360 and PS3...first of all how old are those systems by now?  A device developed 7 years later has better resolution???

Sarcasm aside, just like the kinect cannot produce any great games without the use of an actual controller neither can an Ipad.  It locks you into casual gaming, or gaming with the worst controls possible.  Why don't they just make a 1st party controller for this?  Go over to tested's website and look at any of their app of the day games and see if you can find a serious game where they don't say they controls are shit.

I thinks its totally valid. By now it is an established gaming platform. Some of them are actually really good. I personally sold my iPad 1, though. Having a "everything"-laptop, gaming-pc and smartphone already.

If you show iPad coverage, then to be fair you'll eventually have to show Windows 8 and Android tablet coverage.

I'm glad we have coverage. One of the only reasons I now visit IGN (urk) is that they have iPhone game reviews and deals listed. Though I suppose I should just stick to TouchArcade for that...

Anyway, it's totally a legit gaming device. It just does tons of other stuff which...hey oh, so does the precious Vita. And the 3DS. So I think you'll all survive.

Though it's still balls overpriced. My Kindle Fire kind of sucks but it still plays emulators (after Rooting it).
