Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Is Really the Next Sequel in the Series

Ubisoft confirms what leaked marketing materials had suggested: Assassin's Creed is going full pirate.

Get ready for a million pirate-pun-heavy headlines spread out over the next several months of previews.
Get ready for a million pirate-pun-heavy headlines spread out over the next several months of previews.

After leaked marketing materials from earlier this week offered up a glimpse of a potential future sequel in the Assassin's Creed franchise--one that featured a sea-faring pirate as its protagonist, no less--all we could do was wait until Ubisoft got around to confirming or denying the existence of such a game. We did not have to wait long.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has been officially confirmed by Ubisoft as of today. Details on the game were not provided, but the new box art (which you can see embedded here in the story) certainly confirms both the title and the piratey aesthetic. The game is currently scheduled to release later this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. Probably other platforms too, if we're being honest, but as of now, those four platforms are all that's been announced.

Going full on pirate makes a fair amount of sense, considering it lets the development team keep a lot of the assets and gameplay concepts found in Assassin's Creed III--especially those pertaining to nautical combat. Still, I'm not exactly sold on that subtitle. Apart from the obvious punk rock connotations, the term "black flag" is generally more associated with the anarchist movement, going all the way back to the late 1800s. The traditional black with skull-and-crossbones pirate flag is typically referred to as a Jolly Roger, though that wouldn't necessarily make for as "dark" sounding a subtitle. Of course, the black flag could be in reference to the naval combat term, also known as a "false flag," wherein ships would fly false flags to lure in enemy ships. Or maybe it's a symbol of parley, a nautical tradition wherein ships would fly a black flag to signal to would-be attackers that they wish to discuss or confer terms.

This is why you should never let me use Wikipedia before my coffee's kicked in. We'll have more on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag soon. Probably.

PS3 already has an "exclusive" edition?

edit: Also surprised they're using Assassin's Creed IV already. I thought Ubi would do a game with a subtitle a la Brotherhood or Revelations. But I guess if it's not the same protagonist than they cannot do that...

additional edit: Alex did not note this, but it has been rumored that Connor will not be the protagonist this time. That pertains to the above edit.

Does this mean that Ubisoft will not use DRM on the PC version of this game?

I'm going to be looking at this one with a healthy amount of skepticism. I really wanted to like Assassin's Creed III and wound up kind of hating it. The nautical stuff was interesting though, so maybe this will be alright.

Should've kept the number for the next gen game. It's not the same character but it still feels like a Brotherhood/Revelations.

For the first time in the series the Assassin costume doesn't really seem to fit the world around it.

Yearly franchise baby! Money get!

I wouldn't be surprised if this game eventually came to next-gen consoles.

On the one hand, this concept seems dangerously close to the series jumping the shark.

On the other hand, they could win me back by combining AC boarding combat action and even better naval combat with a meaningful story that ties together broader open-world missions in the style of Sid Meier's Pirates.

AC3's boat stuff just made me wish there was a good next-gen pirate game, so this sounds like exactly the direction I'd want them to go in.

I think the more exciting thing is that this will most likely be released on next gen consoles as well. While I am kind of fatigued on AC, pirates could be interesting.

I'm all for it, Connor was a boring protagonist stuck in a relatively boring game. The best parts were the ship sections and I'm glad they are expanding on them.

I haven't played an assassin's creed game before but I would get on board if they set it in the golden age of piracy. Given their dedication to historical fiction, from what I've seen, this is just such a ripe and fun setting where all of the world's shifting major powers are battling in a relatively small part of the globe.

Imagine if you were playing Pirates! but with the level of depth that these games like to drill down into. Fun!

The rate at which they're pumping these out makes me a little sad although someone on Twitter mentioned the idea of this being Wind Waker AC and that would be super rad.

I liked the ship missions in 3, but there gonna really have to flesh out the game mechanics to make it work for a entire game. Also make it like Sid Meier's Pirates, becuase I liked that game.

That costume looks super DUMB. When are they actually going to finish this series? The last game I played was Brotherhood, even then it was getting a little too tiring for me.

I feel like this is the best direction to take the series in. The naval missions were easily the best part of AC3.

After how bad AC3 was, maybe they need to let this hang out for another year. Of course, the nautical combat was one of the better parts of AC3 (though I still thought it a bit dull at times).

I wonder if this time, when you climb a tower (on land), if you have to dive off into a fish monger's stall and slurp safely into a pile of mackerel. That would make for a day 1 purchase for me.

If they combine the stuff that made Brotherhood awesome (actual exploration/puzzles, interesting targets to hunt/kill) with a shit ton of ship battles I'm in, I loved the ship stuff in three.

Ubisoft sure is beating this series into the ground. The only thing that makes it even remotely interesting is the setting of each game, and I don't think that does it for me any longer. I played about two hours of Assassin's Creed III and was bored out of my mind - I don't think I'll be bothering with this one.

Man I was hoping with a title like Black Flag that AC would be going into the anarchist movement of the early 1800s and beyond. That could be kinda interesting.

I would buy it even more if it was called Assassin's Creed: Jolly Roger.
