Assassin's Creed Is Probably Going to Be a Movie Now

Sony Pictures picks up the rights to Ubisoft's time-spanning sci-fi assassination series. Did I get in all the necessary descriptors?

Earlier this year, Ubisoft announced that it had had enough of the Hollywood system, and would form its own film studio, a sort of DIY bastion of quality that would ensure that any Ubisoft properties brought into the film world would be seen through with the proper level of care and creative effort. Now, news comes forth via Variety that a film based on arguably Ubisoft's biggest property, the Assassin's Creed franchise, is in the works. This news is very much in keeping with the spirit of Ubisoft's original announcement...except for the part where they apparently just want to sell the film rights to Sony Pictures.

Like this, except probably with Jason Statham.
Like this, except probably with Jason Statham.

Indeed, Sony has spearheaded the campaign to turn Assassin's Creed into an interactive tale of a time-spanning assassin's guild into a decidedly less-interactive version of that same thing. To be fair, Ubisoft Motion Pictures will be directly involved in this project, and will likely maintain significant creative control over the film. Sony's interest seems to be more as a distributor and marketing machine that will finance and hopefully profit from the project, while UMP does a lot of the creative heavy-lifting.

The deal is not 100% finalized, but all signs seem to be pointed in this becoming very much a thing. With that in mind, I ask of you, the engaged reader, what would you even want from an Assassin's Creed movie? The games themselves are incredibly cinematic, with the added bonus of allowing you, the viewer, to stab people interactively. Are you good with the idea of seeing rugged, handsome actors doing all the neck-stabbing for you? Or do you prefer to be in direct control of your neck-stabbing-based entertainments?

I think this, and Mass Effect, offer some of the most fleshed out universes that can be adapted into film. They don't even need to tell the story of the games they're based on or even the characters because the lore is so strong. Granted, the narrative in Assassin's Creed has become way too convoluted and might need some trimming down before going on the big screen. My only wish would be to see them focus more in past ages than in modern times. And even if it sucks we always have the awesome games to go back to.

No. I'm so fucking worn out by Ezio. It was a stretch to drag out Ezio's story for the second second game and I'm really not looking forward to the third second game of Ezio. And then definitely not a movie on top of all of that. Otherwise, it has enough concept that it could probably make a decent movie in and of itself, with the right writer.

They should just essentially make the first movie basically exactly like AC 1, just remove desmonds storyline being interwoven and the fact that it's in the animus until the very end so as to set up a sequel and effectively have a nice complete story, so that you don't need to have seen it to watch the inevitable sequel.

I thought that short film they made for Assassin's Creed 2 was pretty alright.

As long as it's better than the Prince of Persia movie, I'd go see it. I think there is a good enough story to the games that they could do something cool with it.

I would also prefer if this movie focused in either the Altair story or that time-period, because

  • a) It would have none of the DaVinci shenanigans, and would probably be a "stealthier" movie
  • b) I much prefer the Altair character over Ezio

Yep. The Holy Land just works better as a setting for a story that is essentially about the clash between religion and secular humanism. Altair was always a better character too.

Nobody took comic book movies seriously until Blade came along...will this be the "Blade" of videogame movies? Prooooobably not, but we can always hope!

Before I jump onboard with Ubisoft's whole "We'll do it ourselves" approach to video game filmmaking, they need to come out and say whether or not Prince of Persia was the inspiration behind it, and whether they saw that as a success and a step in the right direction, or a failing and something they want to prevent from happening again.

Because Prince of Persia is some of the worst garbage I've ever watched.

Hope it's at least as good and fun as Prince of Persia. Which was the only good game-to-film adaptation ever done.

Though, call it good or bad, I still have a soft spot for both Mario and the Van Damme Street Fighter movie :P

You know, this could work....

If they leave established canon alone and set the film in somewhere we haven't explored...perhaps a movie about the history of the order, or about a group of Assassins working in 2012 against Abstergo.

I just want them to leave the game canon alone and turn their attention to other parts of the AC Universe that could do with a good fleshing out on screen...with subtle ties to the games in there for the uber-fans

Whenever you hear of a game being made into a movie, it's always followed by:"If it's done right it can be great." Problem is, it's never done right.

I don't understand the desire to make movies out of games, because I'd rather play Assassin's Creed than watch it. That being said, I don't have a problem with them making it. I'm not going to see it, anyway.

I doubt they leave much of the Eden stuff in, but I think that's the only way it would be interesting. Sort of an Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark thing for the Pieces of Eden.

Christ, I hope not. It was okay at the end of AC1, but in AC2 where they're all like

I was about ready to check out with the series.

If this does happen, I wouldn't want it to be a high flying adventure with a cooky comic relief side kick. I'd want it set in a single city and handled more like a crime drama or detective story with political intrigue and junk.

Kristen Bell as Lucy is an obvious must, but getting a good Ezio is going to be difficult. Please oh please not Statham.

I have to admit, I can't wait to see the reboot of the franchise that Sony pictures will make 10 years after they release the first AC film.

Ezio Auditore Da Firenze is a terrific hero, and very well developed. He's one of the best leading characters I've ever had the privilege to meet in a an action game. Altair wasn't bad, but Ezio was more likable in my opinion. If they do make a Assassin's Creed movie, then I would love for Ezio to be the lead hero. Since Assassin's Creed 2 was set in Rennaisance Italy, then I think they could do a good job recreating the time period, plus the costumes would be amazing, too. That's my preference, but I will be happy with whatever UbiSoft, and Hollywood choose to do.
