Bastion Getting Free DLC Everywhere But Xbox 360

Stranger's Dream add-on includes two game modes, and a new "Who Knows Where."

No Caption Provided

When you think about some of 2011’s best downloadable games, Bastion immediately comes to mind, and if you’ve been hoping to scratch that itch again, Supergiant Games has what you need.

On December 14, Supergiant Games is launching the Stranger’s Dream downloadable content, which includes a new “Who Knows Where” section, complete with new voice overs, and two new modes. Score Attack Mode starts players at level one with all spirits and idols unlocked, and No-Sweat Mode is the equivalent of very, very easy--you can continue where you die.

Stranger’s Dream won’t cost a dime on PC, but you’ll have to pay $1 on Xbox Live, as Microsoft has some very strange, inconsistent policies when it comes to offering free content on its service. Supergiant Games alluded to wanting to make the content free in its announcement post.

“The Stranger’s Dream DLC will be available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) on XBLA, which we can’t make free due to Microsoft policy, so it’s about as close as we could get,” said the company. “Though, since you’ll be getting a good chunk of new content, we think you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.”

That content will also come to the Google Chrome, which may come as a shock if you haven’t heard that Bastion is also fully playable through Google Chrome now. Yes, the browser! It means Mac owners can check out this spectacular action RPG. That version is available right now, and if you want to see how well it does/doesn’t work, you can play the prologue for free.

How did Valve get away with free co-op DLC for Portal 2?

Valve probably has enough publisher clout to say "Look, you either give the DLC away for free, or you don't get it on your platform at all. Remember how nobody gave a shit about TF2 on your console?"

Super Giant Games, by comparison, is like 5 people, and can't play hardball with Microsoft, especially when they sold so many copies on XBLA and don't want to deprive all of those players of the new content.

@phish09: It's because it was free on PSN as well. Same goes for the Portal 2 content. Since it's free on PSN, it has to be free on XBL. Microsoft doesn't consider PC to be a "competitor platform."

Seriously? None of this stuff bothers you? It's attitudes like this that are the reason they can nickel and dime the industry with no repercussions.

Does it bother me that I can pay $1 for DLC that isn't horse armor or cheat codes? No, can't really say I'm up in arms about this.

If this game was also on the PS3, the DLC would be free on the 360. The only way DLC can be free on the 360 is if it's free on a competing console.

Wish they'd announced this before it went off-sale on Steam. Would have been better off just getting a PC copy and having some versatility in my game library. I know it's just $1 but Microsoft's policy is asinine.

You know that there's the holiday sale craze still coming ...and I see no reason why Bastion wouldn't be a few % off again during that time.

It's one dollar, but still it's through xbox live (which we pay for), and it's not packaged goods. If the developers can release it for free on every platform except for xbox that is crappy. Should make it so that gold members that have the game can download it for free. I mean c'mon!

It's less of the whole $1 that bugs me and more of a fact that I have to buy $5 worth of points to start with. I do see why microsoft has to charge, but they just don't justify it very well.

Patrick doesn't want to see consumers getting fucked over on stupid policies. If you have no problem with getting fucked over (Microsoft INSISTING that you pay for free content is the definition of fucking you over, by the way, dollar or not.) then you shouldn't have any problem with Patrick stating his opinion. Then again, he could charge you a dollar for this article and you'd totally be cool with it.

I fully support Patrick's defense of consumers. We're not fucking monkeys for the industry to take advantage of at every turn -- but as long as people like you exist, they'll continue to think we are.

Hell, if I could get away with charging you a dime for every letter I typed in this reply, I would -- unless you punched me in the face and said "Get your fucking hands out of my wallet!"

That's pretty much what MS is forcing SGG to do here, making them charge for content they want to release for free... The fucking nerve of MS. I'd be pissed. I'd have just kept the content off of XBL and encouraged others to do the same. MS would ease up on this stupid fucking policy if it meant they kept getting inferior versions.

Ah, but see this is the difference. The shit you wrote isn't worth a dime. Bastion DLC? I would have payed $10. Hell, I bought the game twice, once on XBL and once on Steam.

This whole streak of "Microsoft, the giant evil corporation that's stealing your rights!" is just laughable. As was pointed out in the comments of the ToS controversy that Patrick tried to stir up, there are video game websites with ToS that have the class action clause in it as well. Are you pissed about that? No. You're pissed at the big Microsoft and Sony boogeymen, who come like thieves in the night and steal your wallet. Well, actually, they take a dollar from your wallet apparently, but whatever.

There are a lot of things to point your righteous anger towards in the video game world. Having to pay $1 for DLC isn't really one of them.

@nintendoeats: More Bastion is always welcome, and I have to get that S-Rank back up. Also, it's free (for the ones that can have it free) so I don't see anything wrong in this upcoming DLC.

1. According to the CREATORS of this content, it is worth exactly "FREE". It is a gift, you don't have to pay $10, that's the thing. They don't want you to pay anything at all for it. The problem isn't the dollar, the problem is that they're being forced to charge you. And you LIKE it.

2. If corporations give you a reason to get angry, you should do everything you can to grant them that wish. Don't accept bullshit from anyone. You wouldn't like it if the gas station charged you an extra $0.50 per gallon because you had a red car, so why put up with bullshit anywhere else? NEVER put up with it, and it becomes less of an issue. Blindly accept it, and you only encourage it. I never said MS was evil, I said they have bullshit policies that must be brought down a peg. Only us as gamers (You think they'll do it VOLUNTARILY?) can change that. But first we have to have a desire to change that.

2. Unlike you, I don't view corporations as board rooms full of executives discussing what ways they can piss off and screw over their customers. They are businesses making business decisions. You either play ball or you don't. You don't run to the internet to try and champion revolution because it rarely works, especially over something as petty as this. You want to make a real difference? Don't buy their products. If your gas station scenario actually happened, I'd go to another gas station. Vote with your dollar.

I honestly can't even believe that there's this much anger over this.

While any Bastion DLC is very likely worth at least a dollar, it really is just an obnoxious policy on Microsoft's part to force it, especially since, as has already been mentioned, you can't buy just '$1' of Microsoft Points (and the excuse of 'but there's stuff to spend the remaining $4 on!' is not at all valid). What seems the most annoying about this whole thing though is this must either be a relatively new policy or Microsoft just has some truly bizarre policies since I know at the very least Super Meat Boy, which didn't come out that long ago was able to get free content added over time; this is especially irritating if it really is just a new policy Microsoft has added since the average price for arcade games has already gone up quite a bit over time on top of the raising the monthly price for Xbox Live so if nothing is done Microsoft really will just probably continue to slowly add small additional charges to everything over time (since small increases over time are far less easy to notice than a single large increase after all).

I'll admittedly more than likely be paying the dollar anyway since I already have the 360 version of Bastion, but something like this will definitely be making me and likely many other consumers think twice about which console we buy/download our games for in the future.

The policy is only inconsistent until you realize Bastion is not on PS3. Portal 2's DLC was free on 360 because it was free from a Steam update on PS3. And Microsoft doesn't care about PC. Also, the Google Chrome?

I was going to buy Bastion on XBLA during the inevitable holiday sale, but now I think my mind has been changed. Well done Microsoft.

@Grimluck343: To your first point, SGG doesn't want to keep players who already bought their game on Xbox from being able to enjoy the dlc over an integrity driven hissy fit, so they did the best they could do by making that content available for as small a price as was possible. There is no way you can seriously argue that they have questionable integrity as a result of that. Any suggestion to the contrary is moronic. I get your not being serious, but come on, that's the dumbest argument ever, regardless.

Edit: I worded that weird, let me try again. As absurd as it would be to question SGG's integrity (which it would be, much love to those guys and the awesome game they made), it's equally absurd that people get this angry over paying $1 for DLC.

@Milkman Exactly. This is a case where I think DLC should be paid for, because I want to support small, great companies.

@Grimluck343:

The problem here is one of concept, not of execution. Those of us who are annoyed at this news would be just as annoyed if it was a penny. I don't think anyone here is saying that the content is not worth $1 or that SGG doesn't have the right to charge $1 if they want to, the problem is the issue of the mere existence of an absurd policy which forces an addition fee. To give perhaps the best historical example I can think of as comparison, the Boston Tea Party did not come about because of the price of tea (it was actually relatively cheap and had been quite a bit more expensive at other points), it came about because of the policy behind the pricing ("No taxation without representation" and all that fun stuff). Yes, I realize the scale of this is far smaller than one of the major sparks of the American Revolution, but the concept of 'problems with policy, not pricing' are identical.

What an absolutely absurd example. Now we're comparing $1 DLC to taxes. I didn't realize that Microsoft not allowing free DLC broke so many people's moral world views.

Final word for the night before I start drinking and have to stop posting else I get banned: this is Microsoft's policy. It probably won't change because people on the internet get angry about it. If you don't like it, do something they will care about: don't buyit. Vote with your wallet. If you do that, you can make a difference, no matter how petty your crusade is. To the rest of you, enjoy your DLC!

80 points is a steal anyway, I won't mind. I already have that much points racked up in XBL Rewards so that'll pay for it.

EDIT: WOW after looking through this post people are genuine idiots. It's one dollar. 80 MSP. Go scrounge around on your car floor or the change dish in the kitchen and you'll be re-compensated.

Sweet, always happy for more content, and I'll happily pay the $1 fee. I bought the soundtrack straight after finishing the game, I'd say I paid around $12 for that, and I've just bought the PC version in the Steam sales. Love it.

Dumb system but no qualms over giving SuperGiantGames that extra 80 points. Bastion is superb.

Sometimes I can't believe that useful idiots like you actually exist. "I'm so sick and tired of listening to people tell me about how I'm being charged unnecessarily and taken advantage of with outrageous terms of service! I never want to exercise my legal rights or pay less for things!"

Would you seriously prefer it if people like Patrick didn't exist anywhere? People who actually have the power to speak up and be heard about businesses going too far or having silly policies, not doing so, just because you don't like being shaken out of whatever world you live in by the inconvenience of the fact that, businesses actually kind of suck sometimes? This isn't about Patrick having a "Giant Bomb Army", it's about the fact that this industry has journalism that almost resembles advertising 90% of the time and the leaders of this industry go further and further every year charging us more for things, whittling away at what little rights we have as consumers, and shoving more advertisements down our throats. You and I can do very little about it. People like Patrick actually can. And that's an incredible breath of fresh air.

God, no wonder America is fucked, anyway. Society has gone from being rebels without a cause to ironic cheerleaders of our own gradual destruction. Doomed because people lack the will, or ability, to take anything seriously.

The only lame thing about really cheap DLC is that you have to put out a minimum $5 order to your wallet (PS3) or MS Points.

I didn't read this whole thread, so I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but that's not exactly true. As far as I know, you are right about the MS points. From my experience on PSN, though, you can try to buy something and it will charge the exact amount you need to your card instead of you having to add money to your wallet. I never use the add money to wallet thing on PSN, I just buy and let it charge, so I keep a balance of 0 in the wallet.

Edit: After I posted I realized I don't think I have ever tried that with an amount less than 5 bucks, so I guess it still might force a minimum of 5 on you. Either way, at least you can even it back out next time you buy something, instead of being stuck with an odd amount of points(I currently have 50 MS points).

Great start to your insightful rebuttal.

"I'm so sick and tired of listening to people tell me about how I'm being charged unnecessarily and taken advantage of with outrageous terms of service! I never want to exercise my legal rights or pay less for things!"

Close. It's more "I'm tired of people getting upset about stupid shit that doesn't matter."

Would you seriously prefer it if people like Patrick didn't exist anywhere?

Out of everything I've said I'm surprised more people didn't get upset over my blatant dislike for Patrick as a news editor. (The answer to you're question is yes, in a professional sense. I have no real qualms with Patrick existing on this earth.)

People who actually have the power to speak up and be heard about businesses going too far or having silly policies, not doing so, just because you don't like being shaken out of whatever world you live in by the inconvenience of the fact that, businesses actually kind of suck sometimes?

This may have been the only worthwhile thing that you wrote out of wall of rage you have sitting up there. Some businesses have silly policies. Is this particular one worth losing your shit over? Not really.

This isn't about Patrick having a "Giant Bomb Army"

Yes it is, because of people like you will gladly get pissed off at whatever Patrick directs your rage towards, just like the people in the ToS article and just like people in the UMD Passport article.

it's about the fact that this industry has journalism that almost resembles advertising 90% of the time

I take it back, you made two good points.

and the leaders of this industry go further and further every year charging us more for things

You picked the wrong hobby.

whittling away at what little rights we have as consumers

Microsoft and Sony include a standard "please don't sue us" clause in their ToS and suddenly consumer rights are gone. You need a new tinfoil hat.

and shoving more advertisements down our throats.

I know right, I go into a rage every time I have to watch an ad on TV or YouTube too.

You and I can do very little about it. People like Patrick actually can. And that's an incredible breath of fresh air.

Patrick, our White Knight, will march on Redmond with his GB army behind him and save us all from this injustice of $1 DLC.

God, no wonder America is fucked, anyway. Society has gone from being rebels without a cause to ironic cheerleaders of our own gradual destruction. Doomed because people lack the will, or ability, to take anything seriously.

So far in this thread we have compared $1 DLC to both taxes and the degradation of society. It would absolutely make my day if someone would try and compare it to terrorism.

Have a little... perspective in life.

Edit: the drinking has started and the typos have arrived.
