Bethesda announces that it's publishing the next Prey.
3D Realms’ and Human Head Studios’ first-person shooter Prey will live on via a new publisher. Earlier this morning, Bethesda Softworks announced a proper follow-up to Prey simply called--wait for it--Prey 2. The game is being developed by the series’ original creator, Human Head Studios, and will see a release in 2012 across the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
As is customary with these exceedingly early announcements, meaningful details are being held for upcoming magazine spreads. Prey 2 will be featured in the May issues of both PlayStation: The Official Magazine and Official Xbox Magazine and "magazines throughout Europe," though news of this sequel has already leaked from French mag Joystick.

If you’re hankering for something, anything, of substance about Prey 2, feel free to pick apart these words included in today’s press release: “We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2,” Human Head’s Chris Rhinehart said in a statement. “Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We’re excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are.”
Prey 2 is being built “on the cutting edge id tech engine,” which I think means id tech 5, the same engine that’s powering titles like id Software’s Rage. Normally, I’d say the game would at least look pretty as a result, but if this indeed a true sequel to 2006’s Prey, expect to see a lot of brown tones and yawning caverns lined with glistening grease and bulbous bits.
UPDATE: Bethesda's director of marketing, Pete Hines, has confirmed that Prey 2 will not be using id tech 5. In a statement given to IGN UK he said, "This game has been in development for quite a while and id tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn't an option,"
I never got far enough to beat the game as I simply lost interest but if Prey 2 is utilizing the id tech 5 and looks gorgeous then I'll give the sequel a go. Already sounds awesome being on an open alien world.

I'm sorry but we clearly didn't play the same game, Prey's environments, despite lacking any preset color schemes, had plenty variation when it came to color tones.

That's cool. While the original Prey felt very antiquated when I played it a couple of months ago, I thought it had some pretty good potential. Then again, I did also feel that the game's strong opening sets a bar it is never matched by any moment after that in the whole game. Here's hoping Prey 2 is good, I have wondered what has happened to the main character (Jackie?) after the sort of cliffhangery end of the game.
I loved PREY. The multiplayer was totally sick, and it did a lot of cool things with level design. Anyone who didn't like PREY was probably a goof. Also mad props to Human Head for getting another gig. After this I hope we get a sequel to RUNE. Just thinking about it makes me hard as a rock!
@dvorak: The fake Art Bell parts were amazing. It was exactly what I would imagine him doing if there really was an alien invasion: staying on the air till the very end. Even now that he's off the radio, I'd bet he would come back just for that broadcast.

People are really down on Prey for some reason. I remember it being a great game with some fantastic level design and some really cool sweeping shots that at the time were really amazing to me.
Prey has one of my favorite beginnings in any game I mean being in a bar at a reservation while a ufo sucks you up into it while don't fear the reaper plays in the background pretty epic.

It was ugly, controlled poorly, ran poorly on consoles, and had some pretty dumb designs. Uninspired in a lot of ways. It was entertaining enough with nothing better to play, but nothing really special.
