Big Surprise, Deus Ex Is Headed to Next-Gen

Eidos Montreal teases Deus Ex: Universe, and themes for a Human Revolution sequel.

Shocking absolutely nobody, Eidos Montreal has confirmed a sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PC and next-generation consoles on the studio’s blog today.

Studio head David Anfossi described the game’s status as being at the “starting point” of production, and said “most” of the team that worked on Human Revolution is also on this game.

“It took us four years to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise,” said Anfossi.

Though details on the sequel were kept vague, Anfossi did release one piece of concept art, and discuss some of the themes the team is exploring. Specifically, it's looking at the idea of trans-humanism segregation, and the idea of different parts of the world segregating into technological classism.

No Caption Provided

Anfossi also talked about Deus Ex: Universe, which is basically branding for the “extended universe” portion of the franchise. It’s the umbrella that novels, movies, spin-offs and other material will fall under.

Look, I was as skeptical as anyone about Human Revolution, but Eidos Montreal nailed it. Room for improvement? Sure. But it had the heart and spirit of a Deus Ex game, and I’m awfully excited to see where the series heads next. (No, I have not tried the weird iOS game.)

Apparently Alex has been rubbing off on Patrick, if this news post is anything to go by.

That is not good.

That's cool! I liked the look/style of Deus Ex HR. There were some amazing sets, and I overall enjoyed the game. Especially the music was great! What wasn't so great about it was the rushed ending and generally the story around the 2nd half of the game. I hope they spend more time on story in the future and make the less generic ideas stand out.

Deus Ex might be the one series that would get me interested in reading a spin-off novelisation.

@lingxor: yeah, probably. In all fairness though you could say that about any game made these days that isn't CoD, Metal Gear, or GTA.

I really love the Deus Ex series (well, everything except the second game that I refuse to acknowledge even exists) so I'm excited about a new one. Even with all it's faults I really enjoyed Human Revolution.

I guess the only questions I have is where will it take place in the timeline and will we be playing a new character or someone already in the series. I'm assuming its taking place in the same universe, right?

Lets just hope that they don't outsource the boss boss battles this time, AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE USE BETTER VOICE ACTORS!

Yep, I mean what are we talking for this game. 2016, 2017? They shouldn't be talking about it now.

Well if that is how it is I am going back to sleep. Still I see good sense in them mentioning it, just to reassure those who care that it is happening. Hype however could be tedious.

I guess it's at least sobering to understand this game as well down the road. Maybe after now just keep semi quiet about it.

That's my guess based on the fact the last one took 4 years to make and they have just started on this one. New engine, probably cos new consoles? Maybe they are just trying to be the anti-Valve or something. I really liked the last game but I am not foaming at the mouth or anything. If Bethesda had said sort of thing about the next Fallout I would be annoyed. Sometimes knowing nothing is best.

I personally dont mind it as long as the relax on the hype from here on out. If its a 1-4 year hype train i'm jumping off, but i see no problem with them releasing a press release that says 'hey duders we're working on a new Deus Ex"

I'm calling it now. This is going to be similar to Destiny and The Division. One of those single-player multiplayer joints.

@mormonwarrior: That first mission is pretty weird, I did the same thing you did with the hosties. But it gets really good from then on out.

I played an hour or so of the first one, past the first major mission, and I really don't get the appeal one bit yet. Does it get better later on? I hate the inventory system, limited ammo, and the bad map system. I wanted to save the hostages but couldn't find them for the life of me.

Gah. I hate it when a user creates a new thread to share a news story just as an excuse to broadcast their opinion about it.

I never finished Human Revolution. I meant to, it seemed interesting, but I think what put me off was the clunky first-person movement and controls. At least in Fallout 3 I could play in third-person and trick myself into believing it wasn't trying to be a FPS :P

Sign me up for the shocked camp. This was not an obvious decision at all. DXHR came out over two years ago and to just now be announcing a sequel is something that's pretty rare nowadays. With how relatively niche it was, it frankly wouldn't have surprised me at all if Human Revolution turned out to be the last Deus Ex game ever to be made.

Next time you're going to do a title like that maybe make it seem like it's only you that thinks that. A lot of us didn't expect it as you can see in the comments. In fact it seems too good to be true.

Human Revolution was one of the greatest games for this generation. I hope they focus on keeping the feel of the world created, rather than an exact sequel of the story and mecanics. Go Canada! Your making some awesome games!

Glad to hear it they're making another one. I am actually a bit surprised. DE:HR did well, but not spectacularly well. SE actually weren't that happy with how well it did - they were expecting it to make "Mega-Bucks", like a CoD game.

Desperation has probably forced SE to give the greenlight.

I remember hearing rumors and seeing job postings regarding a sequel (with a multiplayer feature of course), though I believe at the time it sounded like it was aimed at current gen consoles. Wonder if it'll end up being Cross-Gen, or simply ported to the new consoles and only released there.

Must admit to being pleasantly surprised as well. I thought this was pretty much done since the game hadn't exactly set the world on fire.

Has anyone played those supposedly updated boss fights? I'm curious to know if the changes they talked about happened of if that's in the Director's Cut (or is that a version for consoles of patched PC boss fights?).

"Big surprise"

"Shocking absolutely nobody"

Why the snark? Seems like it's ok to present articles about new product announcements from big studios in this way on Giant Bomb and it bugs the shit out of me.

It actually did shock me, since I thought the game didn't do amazing. Either way, I'm happy since DXHR is one of the best games of the generation.

I don't know if I want to say "shocked", but I can easily say that I would not have been surprised if no more Deus Ex games had ever come along.

Anyway, I didn't like DEHR the first time I played it all that much but I found myself thoroughly enjoying the first half of it the second time I played it. The latter half started to fall apart, but overall it's a really good game. I'm glad to see that another one is in development.

Still, I wish big publishers would make a habit of announcing games within 8 or so months of their release along with some juicy details and a decent trailer or two. "Hey, we're making a new game, it's called "___" and here's a screenshot! We'll answer your questions next year!" is not a particularly fun announcement, it just leads to me getting excited for a little while and then forgetting about it until it launches.

Now add this to your design document.

Boss fights should be more than just a dangerous enemy with lots of hit points, if a player wants to use the skills they have earned to approach a boss fight a different way, let them do it... maybe don't even include boss fights.

I love Human Revolution, great game, more punching people in the face please, though assuming this isn't Adam Jensen it might be wrong to steal his trademark.

They farmed out the boss fights to a different team which is why there is such a stark difference in game and bosses.

Also note that they finally gave a hard date for Human Revolution Director's Cut, which had been sitting at a nebulous Q3 2013 even though we've been there for a while now. No price announced, hopefully it won't be full price
