Conference Bomb Drop

Bullet points of the major announcements made at each of the conferences today.

Here's a quick wrap-up of the conferences today. I'll leave the opinions for the guys' podcast later tonight but in general I think Microsoft and EA came off pretty impressive with Ubisoft coming off a little dry. You can expect the same coverage from us tomorrow. In the meantime I think I might watch this rerun of Revenge of the Nerds (for the second time today).

Remember we've got videos for almost all this stuff so make sure to check out that portion of our site for ad-free video viewing.

Microsoft

  • Xbox Live soon to recieve 1080 HD streaming, Facebook/Twitter/Last.fm integration.
  • Xbox peripheral Project Natal "makes you the controller". Essentially a camera that can recognize your movent.
  • Beatles Rock Band looks better then expected with a unique art-style that goes through each phase of their career. Yoko, Paul and Ringo show up.
  • Alan Wake is not only still being made, but looks great. Lots of lighting and slow-mo effects.
  • Infinity Ward showed off some Modern Warfare 2 gameplay footage featuring some epic ice-climbing and snowmobile battles.
  • Metal Gear Solid Rising will be a X360 release. It's a totally new game.
  • Lionhead is working on some crazy Life-gaming with "Milo" a virtual character you can interact with through Natal.
  • Halo: ODST looks like a team-based Halo game. Halo: Reach also announced but unknown as to what genre it is.
  • Left 4 Dead 2 is a surprise sequel due out in the Fall.
  • Tony Hawk shows off Ride, his newest game that uses a skateboard controller.
  • Crackdown 2 is confirmed.
  • Forza 3 is confirmed and looks a lot like Forza 2 with sharper graphics and nice skinning options.
  • Shadow Complex is a metroid-like shooter that will be an arcade download game.
  • Joy Ride is a free kart racer that uses your avatar's in game.

Electronic Arts

  • Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic is a triple threat from BioWare. Very impressive stuff.
  • Peter Moore showed off lots of Sports stuff included Fight Night Round 4, EA MMA, Madden online franchise options, and NCAA team builder.
  • Need for Speed SHIFT shows off some impressive in-cockpit views. They're giving away a BMW at their booth.
  • The Saboteur looks like it's coming along nicely with a unique undersaturated style.
  • Crysis 2 will be released on the X360, PC and PS3.
  • APB is a quasi-MMO with lots of action and morality choices.
  • Brutal Legend looks pretty sweet. More gameplay show with part 2 of the Jack Black video shown.
  • Littlest Pet Shop shows that EA is heavily focused on attracting a younger audience to their games.
  • EA focused on fitness games for the women's market.

Ubisoft

  • Assassin's Creed II cinematic shown. First game sold 8 million units. Looks great.
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction one of Ubi's biggest games this year. Demo footage shown was the same as the MS conference.
  • Working with James Cameron on a game based on his film Avatar. It will be a 3D game.
  • R.U.S.E tabletop demo shown. Continues to look like a great hardcore strategy game.
  • Ubisoft is really pushing their pairing with Hollywood to their shareholders.
  • Red Steel 2 will be bundled with the Wii Motion Plus. Controls look better then the first game.
  • Rabbids and TMNT are two games being targeted at the younger Wii market.

  • Working with Pele on a kid friendly soccer game called Academy of Champions.

nice

I bet Halo: Reach is a CG movie that will be released before ODST, to explain the story a bit more. I remember seeing something like "remember reach" in the ODST trailer so idk.

Edited by Fr0Br0

At least I don't have to navigate between 85 different news pages and 35 different websites just to know what the hell happened at E3...

Thank you very much, Snide.

Edited by Milkman

Any word on exactly when this said podcast might be going up?

Posted by gingertastic_10

great sum up...personally, i really liked crysis going to console, and im still really stoked for brutal legend ^__^

Posted by Meltbrain

Great job today, Dave. That Ubi conference was hellish to sit through.

Posted by pissedoffthewitch

They HAVE to deliver on Alan Wake now. They cant show us game-play like that, then six months later, they pull a Duke Nukem on us.

Posted by Vance_Helsing

Wow, I really, really didn't miss anything when I skipped out on the EA & Ubisoft press conferences. There's not much I'm really interested in that hasn't already been seen or announced already. The "Avatar" game (based on the James Cameron movie" might be cool, same w/ APB, Assassin's Creed 2 & the Saboteur (and I guess that EA MMA game- UFC Undisputed already has competition?) but other than that nothing got me pumped like the Microsoft Press Conference today.

Thanks for the updates!

Edited by Ineedaname

You should change that MGS one, because hasn't it been confirmed for both?

Although a very nice opening day.

I want to play Alan Wake but scare easy with games, not films only games, I played through half of deadspace, then I went to uni I tried to play it in my room, and decided against it.
Sad and girlie I know =(

Now I'm waiting for the Nintendo Press Conference.

Edited by Residentrevil2

MS won this round...good for them.

Oh, and Alan Wake looks incredible.

its not going to be because odst will come with a halo reach multiplayer beta

YO YO YO Dave you did a off-the-hook job. You and I should get a few bitches and hang.

Posted by TripMasterMunky

Microsoft conference was really good. No lecturing on sales or statistics. Just straight up showing games.

Posted by snide
@mudkip9000: You bring the yayo. Totally kidding. I just like saying yayo.

That would be difficult seeing how you can get entry into the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta when you get ODST.

all they show after FF13 is exclusive

"Red Steel 2 will be bundled with the Wii Motion Plus. Controls look better then the first game."

Lolz... What a summary. Thx, would read again. Red Steel 2 looks fantastic.

Rabbids looks awesome and, even if it didn't, it would be thanks to the developers behind it. Beyond Good & Evil, Peter Jackson's King Kong, etc.

someone already beat you to the punch.

@cazamalos: That means nothing considering I never actually watched conference itself. Are you suggesting it is or isn't?
Posted by Sparky_Buzzsaw

Thanks for the bullet-point list.  This makes it really easy to keep track of everything.

yeah i did not make myself clear but here's a quote :

"However, no sooner was the game revealed that confusion set in about what platforms it was being released for. It was revealed during the portion of the Microsoft press conference which corporate vice president John Schappert said was reserved for Xbox 360 console exclusives. However, the product page on Games Press--the UK-based press-release service relied upon by much of the games industry-- is listing the game as coming to the PC and PlayStation 3 with a "TBA" launch date."
Posted by Ineedaname
@cazamalos: How come most/all sites running this are saying that during the conference nothing specific was mentioned of this being an exclusive?
Posted by TwoOneFive
"Crysis 2 will be released on the X360. "

and ps3
Edited by MrKlorox

/me shuns the beloved Dave for confusing 'then' with 'than'

Otherwise, quite concise coverage. I'll be using this post as a reference.

I think it is a given now, considering the games that will be shown, Sony's press conference is going to totally blow away all of the others.

i was pretty underwhelmed by what i saw today.
i was really impressed by Splinter Cell and very intrigued by MGS:Rising. not much else though.

Posted by DavidSnakes

Microsoft came, saw, and conquered.  I don't see Sony or Nintendo doing anything to touch MS

Posted by JJ

I know my GiantBomb alignment is Microsoft - but they came out big. I wonder what everyone else is gonna bring.

Xbox peripheral Project Natal "makes you the controller". Essentially a camera that can recognize your moment.

GB!!! Not only does it recognize your moment, it can track you in 3D in distance, position, and movements, so not just the cheap eyetoy move your hands up and down crap, you can walk around and the games character will mimic exactly what your doing in 3D. As well as it places basic digital skeletons on each person in view for better motion tracking, and even keeps track of body shape, and clothing colour, oh and facial recognition.

Maybe you should just watch the demo vid, if I'm confusing you. hahaha

@Snide:

Was Star Wars, The Old Republic not shown? ;) Just breaking balls man, you're doing a great job holding things down while the rest of the crew is on the road.
Posted by Cazamalos
@Ineedaname:  thats the tricky part, they announce mgsR in the exclusives part of the keynote, but even kojima have not comfirmed if this truth or not
Posted by DavidSnakes
@KrisCarter: Or maybe you're a little worried MS ruined Sony's shit (mostly Nintendo's) with their kickass conference.
Posted by Ineedaname
@DavidSnakes: What ever they do, would you even admit if it was better?
Not saying it will or won't but either way.
Posted by DavidSnakes

I think so, Sony's will be fine.  They'll have a lineup of trailers of the usual suspects GOW3, Uncharted 2, MAG.  I don't see them grabbing other franchises or unveiling potentially revolutionary technology though

Posted by snide
@Ben_Dorian: Old Republic is number one is the EA post along with the other BioWare games.
Posted by Ben_Dorian
@snide:
So not only am I snarky, but I'm also partially blind. Not a good combo for making friends.

Thanks man, anyhow, you've rocked it today, you gotta be tired man. Good day though.

I want to murder somebody everytime I remember Mass Effect 2 is NOT coming this year.  Seriously it really feels like it should come out this year.

They didn't really say...I kinda assumed...but is Crackdown 2 coming this year?  Dang man....I hope it is at least.

Posted by Undeadpool

That sounds...fucking great. Like all around. I'm way more jazzed this year than last.

Posted by MiLeSu

Gonna be hard topping Microsofts stuff, guess time will tell.

Yeah, I'm sure Sony will have a good conference but I can't imagine it will top Microsoft's. They really brought it this year.

Sorry man, but there's absolutely no way in hell Crackdown 2 is coming out this year. It was just announced and all they showed was a trailer. If it's June and we've only seen one trailer, there ain't no way that game is coming out by the end of the year.

You really cut out the fat in here. Thanks, you guys!

My high and low points.*

Higpoint: james Cameron. I thought his speech pizzloaned all over the past-to-current state of Movie>Game crossovers. Now I await pudding.
Low point: It creeped me out when Ubi "suggested" that young boys don't do casual, but tween girls sure do. *shivers* Damn those French and their riskee marketing!

*Ain't seen MS yet.

Awesome summary dude, thanks a BUNCH. I had plans to wake up early and watch stuff live and what not but I started watching some movies late (Lucky Number Slevin, Tokyo Drifer, Grandma's Boy, The Fugitive, and Forest Gump were all on :o) and ended up sleeping in. :(

Posted by Pkshields

Nice roundup, I'm still looking forward to Sonys press conference to see what they have. I enjoyed MS' conference, but I''m a Sony guy, so I hope they can come up with something awesome

Posted by Manks

All in all, some good announcements were made.
