Don't Panic: PS3 Hardware Will Still Play HD Games Via Component

HDMI requirement is part of a Blu-ray anti-piracy measure for movies.

Component, we hardly knew thee.
Component, we hardly knew thee.

The last time Sony removed a feature from the PlayStation 3 hardware, the ability to boot alternate operating systems such as Linux, there was a vocal revolt, albeit from a minority of the Internet.

Kotaku was tipped off to a new feature on the chopping block for the next model of PS3s, wherein high-definition output would be become an HDMI-only feature, dropping support for component.

Technically, that's true--but only for movies, according to a statement from Sony released to Ars Technica. Games and streaming content will continue to output in HD via component and HDMI.

"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards," said the company.

AACS standards?

AACS stands for Advanced Access Content System, an organization responsible for setting hardware standards. Earlier this year, new regulations were adopted that required the phasing out of HD output through component, dubbed the "analog hole," over the next three years. It's an anti-piracy measure, as it's believed analog (component) is easier to copy than digital (HDMI).

This is a Blu-ray specific restriction, by the way. Your Xbox 360 isn't affected.

I'm struggling to figure out how removing component support for HD output will curb torrenting.

Lame.

Doesn't affect me, all my equipment's pretty new.  But there are plenty of people who will be affected.  People like my sister.  (She doesn't actually have a PS3, but I mean people LIKE her who have the rest of her setup and DO have a PS3.)

My mother bought a new TV.  So she gave her old first gen HDTV to my sister.  A 50 inch 720 without hdmi.  It's not "true" HD anymore, but it serves all my sister's purposes.  And there are a lot still of them out there, big 720p tvs.  Not the greatest, but good enough for next gen gaming.  So if someone had a PS3 hooked up to it, they've got a decisions to make (cause you know this isn't just new PS3s, it's going to show up in new firmware soon enough.)  Update and lose their blurays (or at least lose everything but 480 output, and I don't know if you've watched 480 on a 50 inch screen but...).  Or don't update and never play a new game again since they'll require the new firmware.

All to stop the (non-existant) pirates who haven't yet figured out that you can rip the stupid disk on the computer instead of recording the signal with a component cable.  If I'm correct, this requirement was written years ago.  It doesn't apply anymore.  Why is the blu ray board still going through with it?  (Well i guess to answer my own question, all I need to do is remember how many of the blu ray corporations also have big new expensive fully hdmi capable tv's on the market.  Hey, if it's not going obsolete fast enough, sometimes you've got to help things along a little.  Lame.)

copy protection hasn’t ever been good at anything besides inconveniencing paying customers.  also, taking things away from people never fails to make them like you less.

I think that if they want an anti-piracy measure they should just put out a plug that goes between the PS3 to the connection on the internet where the device is a free thing from Sony but you have to register it similar to the authenticator used with WoW. Wonder if the next Playstation console will be as open as the PS3 as it seems that leaving it open for people to try to use it for other operating systems or other computing things has caused more problems for Sony than anything else.

Don't people just rip blu-rays now? Anyway this doesn't really affect any of us unless you're planning on buying a PS3 in August to use as a blu-ray player. Sony said games and streaming content will be unaffected. This seems like one of those stories that people get angry at because they want to be angry.

@darkdragonsoul99: I can relate. MS literally stole from me, and I was enraged for a long time. I still can't justify giving them money for XBL to this day, and refuse to give any of them my credit card information.

I'd be interested to hear what Sony did. PM me if you care to elaborate.

@navyboy: Nothing any company ever does to fight piracy ever does anything but punish their legitimate customers. You can't fight piracy by making it harder for the people who in fact pay. In fact if you make things harder enough it becomes easier to just pirate the stuff.

I personally use component because I record a lot of Let's Plays on my PS3 and it is much easier to record using component than HDMI. I guess from now on I should not buy new hardware and buy used. Also I don't get how this helps fight against piracy, it is easier to buy a 50 dollar blu-ray drive and rip the movie that way.

@darkdragonsoul99: It is a new model PS3. Technically, they haven't taken anything away. They are dropping support for a feature in order to cut their losses. And, again, that's shitty. But in that way it is no different from HD DVD. And let's not forget how quickly Microsoft straight up discontinued the original XBOX altogether back in '06. Unfortunately, that made business sense at the time. We can only hope it makes less business sense when it comes to pimping next generation hardware, and we'll still be getting new 360 games for at least a little while when that time comes.

Sony, MS and Nintendo all fuck up sometimes, and when they do they all make adjustments that almost always piss off their consumers. But don't kid yourself, i f either of them thought it would improve their bottom line, they would straight up take away everything .

I was under the impression it was already like this since the dawn of the physical HD formats (even during the HD DVD days); that using component caused it to downscale to 480p since it wasn't HDCP compliant.

Apparently either the AACS or I don't know how piracy works. Because as I understand it, its stupid easy to rip a bluray from a computer as long as you know how to transcode files so I don't get how this stops any sort of piracy.

@Damian:  That's easy I don't own any nor did I buy the drive I'm not stupid enough to make that kinda bet.  I stay out of format wars sometimes neither side wins.  By the way that's not a removed feature I'm pretty sure it still works even if HD dvd lost.

The way Sony operates  you should be glad blue ray won or they'd probably would have removed that too.  Anything to save them a little money or make them a little money. Like charging you for a sub you canceled 2 years before.

Anyway, I guess this sucks, just for the fact that more > less. I've got an HD TV in the bedroom with no HDMI input. So when PS4 demotes my PS3 to bedroom status I'll probably be all, "Oh yeah! They took that shit out... FUCKERS!"

I guess it was worth it to pay to have the Blu-ray drive replaced in my old 60GB model when it went out rather than just buy one of the new slim models. Also I don't understand people talking about how loud their old PS3 is as I can never tell that mine is on. I guess it's just cleaner than most systems out there that are 3+ years old.

Duh! What is wrong with people here? It's like there's some kind of collective amnesia about how AACS went down, and how hard Sony, as a key member of that bloody consortium, joined Disney in pushing for all of the toughest restrictions in that standard. It's not like books haven't been written about it. Hell, Sony even brags about it in the updated hardcover version of Genryu.

I'm sure Sony was also behind the new regulations that were adopted this year, or at least they didn't fight about it very hard, since they're one of the only 3 companies in the consortium that actually has Bluray content to "protect".

<shakes head>

Doesn't really affect me but it seems kinda pointless.
I would be curious to know how much say or sway Sony has on these AACS regulations.

This will suck pretty bad for people with HDTVs that don't have HDMI. Despite what this community thinks they still exist, and Blu-Ray over component is still a big step up from DVD.

So, if someone were to currently have their PS3 hooked up to their PC via component cables, when this update launches they will no longer be able to watch movies?  Or is this just a hardware change on newer models.
This seems like a bigger issue then the Other OS thing, as that only affected tech savvy users.  There's a lot of people out there who would be kinda upset if all of a sudden their movie player couldn't play movies anymore.

I personally like component video because it's just as good as HDMI as far as quality, AND IT ALWAYS WORKS. HDMI, not so much. Silently downscaling the video signal because of a digital handshake failure is dumb.
