Driver: San Francisco on PC Marks Return of Always-On DRM

Ubisoft is reviving one of its much maligned DRM policies.

Ubisoft has gone back and forth on its PC DRM policies. With Driver, it's back to always-on.
Ubisoft has gone back and forth on its PC DRM policies. With Driver, it's back to always-on.

Ubisoft's relationship with PC users has been a rocky one, thanks to the company's erratic DRM policies. Sometimes its games require a constant online connection to play, sometimes not.

Assassin's Creed II required an Internet connection at first, even if you were playing single-player. So did Splinter Cell: Conviction. Ubisoft eventually patched out that requirement, instead asking players to verify the game's authenticity through a login screen. After that, the game didn't check for an Internet connection. Ubisoft relied on a similar login method for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Not perfect, but it worked.

Ubisoft is returning to the always-on requirement for the PC version of Driver: San Francisco.

"I can confirm that the PC version of Driver San Francisco will require an online connection to play in both single player and multiplayer modes," said Ubisoft public relations representative Dominic DiSanti to me this afternoon.

The change in DRM policy was noticed on the game's official Twitter account.

On the console versions of Driver, players will have to activate Uplay in order to access the game's multiplayer, as Ubisoft adopts the now regular "online pass" feature designed to combat used games.

"When we first introduced the connection requirement last year, we stated that our decision to implement it into our PC titles would be considered on a case by case basis and this remains true," said DiSanti. "We will assess each future PC title and strive to offer the best gameplay experience possible while also ensuring that we are protecting the amazing work and effort of our talented creative teams."

Part of the reason people react strongly to Ubisoft's DRM policy is out of principle. They own the content, why can't they play it, with or without Internet? The other reason is practical, as hackers brought down Ubisoft's DRM authentication servers, which prevented some users from being able to play Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter 5, two games with always-on DRM.

It's possible Ubisoft will change its stance, depending on user feedback; the company has done so in the past. As it stands, however, when Driver ships in September, it'll mark a return in DRM policy.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Exactly what people in these comments are saying :)

@mantasradzas said:

I bought Assassin's Creed 2 on the PC, the DRM was never a problem.

For you maybe. For a lot of other people it was. Especially when the game was unplayable for the first week, due to their servers being down.

@mantasradzas said:

 And it DID put of piracy for that game for a month, which I'm sure sold some copies.

False. The crack was out within a couple days. By the end of the week even the "glitches" that Ubi put in place to criple pirated versions were circumvented.

@mantasradzas said:

If you pirate it because it has DRM to prove a point, you don't have a point.

People pirate games for many other reason besides proving a point. Draconican DRM is just an additional inconvinience that pushes more people over the edge towards piracy.
Furthermore when you can't play a legit game properly because of the DRM then pirating it does actually prove a point. If you fail to see the point does not mean that it does not exist. In this particular case, it would prove:
  • overly harsh DRM is innefective compared to standard DRM (one time activation, Steam, etc)
  • the company looses a customer due to their anti consumer policy

I really do appreciate Ubisoft as a video game dev. They do great work. It sucks that they have to go through the difficulties of trying to juggle customer service and fighting piracy. Because fighting piracy seems to take priority :/

also i don't now how this really harms legitimate players. i've been playing WoW for years and that requires a internet connection to play and so will Star Wars TOR.

First of all, you could play WoW offline if you wanted. It would just be a huge, empty world with nobody in it. Second, the reason that DRM harms the legitimate consumer is because the best we can hope for is that it affects nothing. If there is ever any problem, then the only people who are hurt are the people who actually bought it. Pirates have taken the DRM out so they don't give a crap. Any scenario that harms their legitimate customers while providing only a modest inconvenience to the hackers is inherently unsavory.

I closed my PayPal account after the shit that recently went down. It's not such a great leap from there to Ubisoft.

They really need to learn that the best business is in providing incentives for buying it, not trying to punish people for stealing it.

you can't play WoW without a internet connection at all.
You can actually. It'll just be empty unless you go through the additional hassle of getting mobs and NPCs to work.

I've done it myself to have a mess around when the Wrath of the Lich King alpha started, wanted to see some of the areas. It was all running off my machine so I didn't have to have a connection.

I can't believe somebody used WoW as an example for always-on DRM, though, very silly.

Ubisoft's Driver:SF sales prognosis for PC must have been below 5. Of which 4 bought it by mistaking it for a better game. They are just making sure that the remaining person who slightly wants it will just can't bring himself to do it. You all should be happy!

Nobody gives a shit enough about Driver multiplayer to buy a separate UbiPass or whateverthefuck it is.

They're going to learn the hard way I guess. These industry tools say stuff like: "The consumers are MAKING us enact these policies because of used games." Well guess what, the consumers can boycott your games. And frankly, with all this talk about how mobile app games could be hurting console game sales, these combative policies are going to turn people off.

"Oh I have to pay extra money to play this game AFTER I buy it used? I need to constantly have an internet connection to play it? I'll pass. Angry Birds cost me a dollar, Gravity Guy was free,  and I've put 15 hours into each of those games. Cthulu Saves the World/Breath of Death VII were $3 total and each gave me 8 hours of entertainment, and From Dust cost me $15 but came with a free game and has some of the most impressive effects I've seen in any game to date so... I'm not paying for DRIV4R multigayer***"

Other than the few people for whom money is no object, most people aren't going to deal with the inconvenience.
Maybe when you have to do this to play Halo or the next big CoD release it'll be a different story...

If I put this in my PS3 and have to get off my ass and go to the computer to create one of their retarded accounts, good luck trying to get me to buy anything from Ubisoft.

 Great move Ubisoft. Good job in killing off any sales you would have had. Hated this DRM in AC2 (didn't bother to read the little note on the page about the DRM so I guess that little mess up is on me). Since then, I haven't bought a game from them and it's looking like I never will again until they get there act together.

And people wonder why PC gaming suffers... "hey, our PC sales are down, so let's introduce MORE DRM... that'll convince people to buy it right?" -_-

how is it silly. your freaking out about having to be connected to the internet to play a game. and WoW requires a internet connection to play (properly) and it has never been a problem.

Ubisoft have always been terrible to PC owners. I think everyone had grief over running some of the hideous ports of Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell that the company put out.

I would expect a company to bring out their best DRM for the best games.  I don't think the history of Driver would say its going to be in the best area.  Prove me wrong ubisoft!
