You'll have a chance to head into the stars before the year is up.
Though most games are released by the end of November, Frontier Development is bucking trends with Elite: Dangerous. You'll have a chance to play the final version on December 16, it announced today.
If you're not familiar with the space faring adventure, here's our recent look at it:
As someone who has fond memories of the original game (it's only the greatest game ever made), Dangerous is shaping up very nicely indeed. I don't think you've got long to go if you want to get in on the Beta and if you do, be warned, this is a *proper* Beta. Online stability is kinda rough.
You will NOT be disappointed. I have the X-55 Rhino and it's just too sweet. You're going to have a great holiday of space gaming! I've been playing the beta for quite a while now and it's only gotten better. Amazing!
Actually, while Elite was big in Britain; it was also released here in the States for the Commodore 64 and IBM compatibles, and (at least within the C64 circles) was also kind of popular.
"Dangerous" is a rank in the original game, but you're not wrong, it's a bad name.
"Elite" is also the highest rank which makes the name even weirder to me. They may as well have called it Rank: Rank
Yeah, while none of the games have had great titles, at least the Elite: Frontier games gave some sense of what the games were about with their titles. Final frontier and all that.
I'd probably have preferred it if they had just called this Elite: Frontier III instead, but I guess that'd be confusing since they used both Elite III: Frontier - First Encounters and Frontier II: First Encounters (and just First Encounters without either the Elite or Frontier branding) for different releases of the last game.
Edit: Err, while Dangerous looks amazing, looking up the old First Encounters cover art made me wish the game looked like this instead, that dashboard looks fantastic:
Status: Still in alpha, barely playable (but don't worry guys, you can spend hundereds of dollers on fake virtual space ships that don't do anything! WHAT A VALUE!)
@puppykisses: I suggest you read some english (UK) literature or at least watch some english (UK) comedy to familarize yourself with the comedic effect of self-deprecating irony.
Also, you may want to look into the concept of modesty and the concept of intelligence before assuming you are indeed familiar enough with basic facts and understanding of the world you live in - and before you attempt to exercise your freedumb and passive aggression to try to put down someone on the internet.
There was nothing passive about that at all. And Dan does make himself look really stupid. That's just the truth. As for why that is, it is my belief that everyone should be allowed to believe in any reason they want!

Braben has been working on Elite: Dangerous long before November 2012, he has had a small team slowly building on it for a decade . That was just when he started fundraising, to really kick it off. But Chris Roberts started at zero. He had no team, it was just him and this humongous vision. Braben already had a company of over 200, lots of development done, a strong plan on what they want to accomplish. Star Citizen is also far more ambitious than Elite. Whether Roberts will ever fully deliver on his dream, I don't know, I have my doubts. But it's apples and oranges to compare these two projects.
@scbundy I think you can sum it up with the old adage "choose one thing and do it well" that's the approach ED is taking and its why they're doing well. SC wants to do everything all at once so their progress is glacial.
I really want to play the game Roberts has in his head but I dont think I ever will.
