Enter the Dominatrix Dies So That a Full Saints Row Sequel Might Live

And the game's current title is perfect.

Will this giant can and alien vessel make it into the next Saints Row?
Will this giant can and alien vessel make it into the next Saints Row?

THQ sent out a release this morning detailing some updated plans for what was to be a "standalone expansion" to Saints Row: The Third. Titled "Enter the Dominatrix," the game was to be concerned with an alien invasion set immediately following the events of the third Saints Row game.

During said invasion, your character would be captured by an insidious alien called Zinyak, who locks you into a VR simulator. It essentially sounded like SRTT's cyberspace section stretched across an entire expansion. That setting would also allow for some gameplay enhancements, or as THQ's now-former EVP Danny Bilson was quoted as saying at the time, players would get "freaking super powers."

All of that is history now, as the release of Enter the Dominatrix has been scrapped and its ideas are being incorporated into a full-on Saints Row sequel, due for release next year. Beyond that (and a few quotes about how impressed new THQ President Jason Rubin is with what Volition's doing) there aren't really any hard details about what the game will contain. Will the story of Dominatrix live on in the sequel? Will superpowers still factor into the new game? No idea. Oh, wait. There's one more bit of information.

The current working title for the game is "The Next Great Sequel in the Saints Row Franchise." Hell, they should just stick with that.

I'd much rather play a full sequel in a new setting than a 1-2 hour DLC for $15

@Demoskinos: In an age where most people don't buy $60 games at launch, can that argument really be used though? As I stated before, Darksiders, another great game, didn't catch on until it was in the $29.99 bin, SR3, went on sale really quickly as well. While both games were great, I really wonder at how much the retail copies actually made for them compared to the post purchase DLC.

Also, to everyone wondering about the Season Pass, it wasn't a real Season Pass, it gave you 2 additional campaigns and the Nightblade pack, not all the DLC, so even if Dominatrix wasn't a standalone, it wasn't going to be included anyways.

I'm not sure how many more games the Saints Row series has left in it, so it's probably a good idea to churn out another sequel before having to switch gears towards next-gen development.

I honestly think Jason Rubin needs to do some damage control with his comments about Saints Row. This is currently their best IP/Franchise and he basically said it was not his cup of tea because of the dildos. Restricting it or making it more "real" takes away from what makes it unique. I could see Volition members just leaving THQ to form their own company.

I'm playing the second game right now because of PS+. I missed it when it first came out and experiencing it for the first time after Saints Row 3 really highlights how great SR3 was. I'm still enjoying SR2 a lot, but the writing, missions, and mechanics in SR3 all seemed to be so perfectly in the service of making the game as fun as possible. Yes, there's more going on in SR2, but I think the quality of everything in SR3 is much higher. I really hope they maintain that in this sequel and that it doesn't just get pushed out to capitalize on the great thing that they created.

Mixed feelings, played the shit out of the game but the DLC was bad, didn't want to pay $40 or more for this if it was anything like the other DLC, running out of things to actually buy and play this year. Oh well, it'll make Tingsitsurf that much better.

Hard to feel confident about a Saints sequel which is partially a scrapped expansion pack and being funded by a publisher with cash problems. Hope it turns out well for Volition.

Pfft. Their cash problems aren't so bad that they're just going to sink for (seemingly) no reason like Studio 38. They're hurting, but they ain't on the brink of death.

Oh, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also originally a "scrapped expansion," so don't you worry 'bout that. Why leave awesome shit to an expansion pack when it could be put to use in a full game? Waste of cool ideas, in my opinion!

I feel the same. I mean i loved SR3 and all. But who knows how many more ideas they have a Volition besides "YO THAT EXPANSION WE WERE SUPPOSED TO RELEASE? LETS JUST MAKE IT A FULL GAME". I do remember hearing that the people responsible with writing/storyline decisions already had a pretty well-plotted out idea for The Next Great Sequel In The Saints Row Franchise(working title) . But who knows how many of those ideas had to be scrapped simply to ship a game as fast as possible.

Good. That first game was hugely flawed especially the bits that were genuinely fantastic. Come back to us when you figure out how to pace a campaign and how not to ruin awesome setpieces by doing them 3 times with them all being way too long from the start. Fix the crummy side missions. Let more than two miserable players coop. I get why everyone adored the game, and in a shorter, less open world (the open world aspect had zero value beyond super fun driving making joyrides enjoyable) or more impressively open world, more focused game I would have loooooooved the game. Some parts were genius, some were just broken, boring, or dumb. And with how they did DLC in the past, I don't want more. I trusted them, bought the season pass hoping for more condensed awesomeness like the very start and the mars ending of the game. Instead I had a miserable, boring, short, but still dragged out experience every godamn time.

Fuck off THQ, Volition needs to bail faster than a virgin in a whore house. Seriously, THQ is digging their death bed, Dominatrix was going to bring them funds to survive and now they're waiting til 2013!?! They won't be financially alive that long! FFS why did Rubin even come to take this over if not to just run it into the ground? Because that's exactly what he's doing with these 'new company virtues' and 'trying to keep things respectable for the company's best interest'. Because we all know closing a studio the day before E3 and then calling another studio embarrassing in the same week is completely respectable and in the company's best interest.

The sales numbers from a stand alone expansion are probably so much less than a full release that it did not make sense. THQ is still 1 major release bombing from going bankrupt, so in the short term to medium term having slightly more revenue probably would not matter all that much (e.g. Darksiders II bombs and they are just as bankrupt with a 2012 stop-gap as if they trucked on to a full 2013 release, but this way they have a solid potential payback....).

Yeah I felt the same way. SR2 had a lot of good ideas but they were bogged down with bad design and poor implementation. SR3 might not have as much stuff or options but it is a far more polished and just plain fun overall. SR3 is a game that knows what it is and what it wants to do and just runs hog wild with it all the way! A prime example of cathartic gaming ^^

As long as it's not a subtitle but actually the full title, I agree. So much on the nose you can smell the 1950's Ford commercial... "it's a heck of a car"
