Everybody Hates EA, Apparently

The game publisher overwhelmingly takes the trophy for "Worst Company in America," according to voters on The Consumerist's poll.

We've purposely avoided covering The Consumerist's poll for the 2012 user-voted Worst Company in America. We did this despite the fact that both video game publisher EA, and video games retailer GameStop were, at one point, both competing for this year's prize. We even ignored this poll as EA went deeper and deeper into the tournament, going up against the likes of Bank of America, AT&T, and Best Buy. We did this because there was no way EA could possibly be considered a more horrific company than any of those great institutions of corporate shittiness, right? Right...?

Heh. Poo.
Heh. Poo.

Imagine my slack-jawed expression upon learning this morning that, yes, EA did manage to beat all of the above companies and take home the "golden poo" award for the very worst company in America in 2012.

The user voting came down to EA going directly against Bank of America, the financial institution known for raising interest rates on credit card holders with no marks against their credit, misleading mortgage holders who sought to modify their loans, and randomly experimenting with jacking up debit card and checking account fees just for shits and giggles. In the end, EA took 64.03% of the vote, essentially destroying Bank of America 2-to-1 in voting.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that many of EA's business practices are fairly anti-consumer and occasionally even straight-up deplorable, but looking down the list of offenses the Consumerist post lists as justification for why it totally makes sense that EA had won--shipping games that required major patching later on, nickel-and-diming players with held back content as DLC, and acquiring independent developers and their innovative products in lieu of innovating with their own products--these could be lobbed at practically any major publisher in the video game industry. In a competition for worst video game publisher in America, I'm not even sure EA would win outright. They'd probably be a contender, but it hardly seems so cut-and-dried.

Most likely, many of the votes for EA came from those particularly incensed by recent issues like Mass Effect 3's ending, the general lousiness of EA's Origin service, and probably some combination of the things listed previously. Considering that EA has been at the forefront of a particularly nasty bit of Internet vitriol regarding Mass Effect 3 in the last month or so, it's not so surprising that voters came out in droves to express their displeasure via this outlet. Unfortunately, in doing so, they managed to put EA up on a pedestal over a company that has literally illegally foreclosed on people's homes. Repeatedly. So, hey, great job Internet.

EA, for its part, is taking the award in stride, telling Kotaku in a brief statement, "We're sure that British Petroleum, AIG, Philip Morris, and Halliburton are all relieved they weren't nominated this year. We're going to continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide."

Snap.

There are companies out there that are doing real, permanent evil. Taking people's houses that they have no right to, using aggressive patenting to take the very building blocks of life as their own, letting safety regulations slide until people are dead and/or massive environmental damage occurs, starting crazy schemes of bad loans and bets that they'll fail to make money hand over fist until the worldwide economy explodes, using trafficked labor to complete projects...etc. Actually look around and you'll see staggering amounts of evil being done in the name of profit.

EA makes videogames. And while I'm sure there's cruelty in that company too, the nature of what they do precludes them from being as horrific as others. This is just plain embarrassing to see, and anyone defending this needs to spend a few good hours reading up on what's going on in the world.

Who else were the young and international people going to vote for? I mean, it's stupid, but logical, especially when you look at how many video game sites linked to the poll.

That's why an internet poll is almost certain to be infinitely unrepresentative: people who hate EA are more than likely to already be on the internet looking to vent their frustration, people angry with the Bank of America very possibly have neither the time nor money to go on the internet and vote in such a vacuous and inconsequential poll.

John Riccitiello has done good things for that company ever since coming onboard. I really don't get the hate. Sure, they've dabbled in plenty of questionable practices, but they're also funding legitimately great games and new IP.

Does that make them the worst company in the US? Not by a long shot.

I couldn't care less about that poll, and EA winning this means more folks get aware of that crap company. Meanwhile if the Bank of America won, who'd give a shit. Everyone knows they suck already.

EA needs to die, won't happen anytime soon but considering how much effort they're putting into screwing over their customers, eventually none is left. EA absolutely dwarfs every other company/publisher in regards to what's bad.

EA hasn't obliterated the livelihood of tens of thousands of people.

Why do people like you respond with crap like that? You act like I claim that EA is a worse company than the Bank of America - which I obviously don't.

I do agree that EA shouldn't have won against the deplorable actions of their competition, but would it kill them to actually learn something from this? Their statement is snobbish and deflective, not addressing the legitimate issues that people raise against them. The endings are hardly a drop in their ocean of their missteps over the last 15 years.

Either way, everyone on that list deserves their "honor" of being nominated.

EA makes a lot of shitty decisions, and they manage their studios like fucking assholes, but they're hardly the 'worst company'. I'd say companies actively polluting the environment, exploiting off-shore labour, and robbing people of their homes are probably a LOT worse...

I dont really see where all this hate originates from. I dont have enough insight to judge which company in the industry is the worst, and I wont just hop on the internet bandwagon and say I hate EA because of some overblown issues which are apparent in alot of other companies aswell. I think alot of people do just that when voting in these kind of polls. I bet if you ask half of the people who voted, they cant come up with a reasonable argument for why they placed EA above other companies on their shitlist.

Really? Worse than Bank of America, Comcast, or other corporations that literally screws people over? Really? I have lost all the little faith I had left in the video game culture/community. No wonder people view the video game community as either whiny children or man-children with the social skills of a rock.

As dumb as I think EA winning a worst company in America contest is, I have to say their response didn't much help them. Rather than maybe acknowledge that they might have done some less than good things to end up in this position and promise to create a better customer experience, they just kinda laughed it off.

@Animasta: Comparatively, I think that Bank of America gets a lot more shit from a lot more people. We don't see many videos of analysts talking about EA's bad business practices, but turn on any major news networks and you're bound to see someone talking about Bank of America.

If stuff like this keeps happening to EA, they're more likely to react to it. That's all I'm saying. Maybe this isn't a big deal, but this combined with a bunch of other stuff might be.

Wait... wait a second. Activision isn't? I mean, well... it's now "Activision Blizzard" but still.

EA Games has been LOSING millions of dollars a year (-$276,000,000 in 2011 according to Wikipedia) for many years now. Can you count the number of --at least pretty good games that were flops that EA has put out?

Dead Space 1 (initially a total flop), Syndicate, Alice: Madness Returns, Brutal Legend, MMA, Stranger's Wrath, Shadows of the Damned, Mirror's Edge... Risks that didn't pay off.

I remember a time in around 2008 where EA temporarily became liked when they released Dead Space because they were finally taking a risk and getting a great game out of it. These fuckers actually put out a lot of solid games every year. Let's count the good stuff they've put out, either simply as publishers or using in-house developers since the beginning of 2011:

Mass Effect 3, SSX, Syndicate, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Battlefield 3, Kingdoms of Amalaur: Reckoning, NHL 12, Shadows of the Damned, Alice: Madness Returns, Crysis 2, Bullet Storm, Dragon Age II, Dead Space 2.

Now. They're still pretty devious company, yeah. Bad DLC, the corruption of Bioware, digging into old franchises, their NFL exclusivity, their terrible NBA games...

But compare to exhibit B: Activision

What series do they have?

Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk (driven into ground, dead), Guitar Hero (driven into ground, dead), Spyro the Dragon (shockingly making millions), Spider-Man (eh), and their meal ticket: Call of Duty.

Oh, and Activision killed Bizarre Creations.

Activision gets to put out a few meh and boring games and then make millions upon millions with recycling Call of Duty. EA spends and loses millions putting out a bunch of solid games that wouldn't exist otherwise. Their nickle and diming is just them clawing at the walls trying to stay afloat.

If EA was like Activision they'd just cut out thousands of employees and do nothing but keep DICE, Maxis, and Bioware, and make nothing but Battlefield, Mass Effect, The Sims, FIFA and Madden, Remove the risk.

PS: Man, I spent a long time writing this post but I gotta say that I don't really like EA, and I don't really hate Activision. At the end of the day I'm left pretty indifferent of them as companies. I just realized I tend to play more and like EA games more than any other game publisher.
